Visions aint that Bleak! Sky Cam Review of the 10 sacks & Player Observations

Also, vern...lets have a real talk about what you're seeing. I want to focus on Zion Nelson for a moment.

My plan was to have a full breakdown of his performance last night with actual gifs...but as I am watching this game again, I realized very quickly that I do not want to spend all of this time breaking down all of his plays (good and bad) as I found there was too much poor play to warrant me pulling all of these gifs. The second half in particular...I don't think he had a single positive play in that half.

A few big takeaways from me...

#1...I don't think Nelson had any business being out there on his knowledge of what to do alone. Donaldson was constantly telling him and clearly repeating himself to Nelson throughout the second half on what his assignment was. This was particularly obvious on plays where Nelson had to give help...he basically just stood around.

#2...Even when we were putting Nelson into positions to do the things he looked great doing in HS...for example...the DeeJay Dallas TD run at the start of the fourth quarter...he peels into the second level to take on David Reese...he gets there, he engages...but he fails to keep him engaged and what turned into a touchdown run has to become a highlight reel play...Reese disengages and had a clear shot on Dallas, that he spins through (poor tackling by Reese...but he shouldn't have been there anyway).

#3...The redirect. Greenard in particular, set Nelson up with a rush upfield to the outside only to quickly counter and get pressure, breaking down the pocket with the interior rush...I stopped counting how often this happened. Miller in the first half had several plays similar to this as well. Greenard v. Nelson was one of the matchups that we will live to regret. Too often we didn't even supply Nelson help with an obvious matchup he was losing all night.

#4...Hand use. This was something I saw more during the second half...but the lack of really engaging defenders was worrisome. He can clearly dance and even mirror...I just find it very rudimentary and veteran DL that are savvy - like Greenard - made him look foolish. Many snaps looked like he would get his ankles broken in a basketball game the way Greenard set him up, moved around him, and applied pressure.

Its his very first game...and right now, I understand there will be a long process for him that could bare fruit...but last night was as bad of a performance by both tackles as youll ever see.

Watching the sky cam replay now. The 1st sack he did have a chance but didn't see Jeff Thomas open over the middle in the end zone. If he would have surveyed the field a second sooner he had a chance to throw that ball before the blitz got there.

I think what Vern is saying is that Zion is late because Zuniga times it perfectly

Which is as dumb as him saying Greenard never lined up against Nelson. I seriously do not think OP watched game. Zion comes out of his stance late. That’s not an opinion or subjective. Not a huge deal considering it was his first game as a true freshman, but he is in his stance as everyone else has forward momentum. It’s fixable. But it definitely contributed to the outcome.

No question. How can he fix it? Is it a case of not knowing the snap count and not wanting a penalty so moving only after he sees everyone else move? Seems odd this would happen so often

Rewatched the game this morning on Xfinity SkyCam to get another POV of Jarren and the offensive line and the game.

Offense:

- 1st Sack slow developing PA pass Jarren had no hope bad play call
-2nd sack delayed LB blitz where there were no hot reads everybody went long there was nothing that Jarren could do, he played it safe and took the sack
- Jarren under pressure from a blitz again hits Jordan right in the hands and he drops it on 3rd and 5 wouldve been a first down.
-3rd sack from a CB blitz on a slow developing play action pass no chance.
-4th sack on a delayed blitz by LB Play was designed to go deep to Mallory, Outcoached long developing play and perfect defensive play call.
-5th sack on a QB option play i dont know WTF that was
-6th and 7th sack nobody was open held the ball
-8th sack Zion beat by Zuniga there was absolutely no one open, best decision wouldve been to take off running
-9th sack he rolled away from immense pressure after a blitz got outside the pocket and froze he fumbled
-10th sack Zuniga read the snap count had a head start beat Zion you have to give it to a great player making a great play right there

Some Offensive LIneman Player Evals
- Zion actually played decent until last drives in 4th quarter and thats all we remember. I think it was a combination of him wearing down, and Zuniga pinnin his ears back and learning the snap count. I repeat go look at the tape Zion handled Moon. Zuniga played everywhere and was only one who beat Zion.
- Campbell on the other hand aint ready @Liberty City El I was holding out hope but he is not ready. I'd give him a few more games to see what happens but we might have to put Scaife out there . Campbell did recover Osbournes fumble on the 4th his best play of the day
-Scaife was a ******* beast out there he man handled Zuniga and everybody whom we went against easily our best lineman.
-Gaynor played decent untill that last snap!!

Key Points
*To be honest a lot of those sacks where he held the ball no one was open Jarren was holding the ball trying to keep the play alive to see if something pops open, he didnt wanna throw it away in the pocket or make a dangerous throw because it was obvious he was coached to not lose the game, but You have to give it to Floridas defense. On the blitzes Jarren needs to recognize them and know where to go we know he can do it (as on the TD pass to Brevin) The delayed blitzes are what really confused him which can only get better with experience. , he was trying to make a play he will learn

*Zuniga and the D Line were slanting inside all night and destroyed a lot of our run plays, more running plays should have been called to the outside Grantham outcoached Enos in that sense.

* I feel we should have made JT4 a bigger part of the game, why we are running reverses to Osborne instead of him I have no idea.

* Our running backs are very good not elite in space. Im hoping Lingard will change that when he returns against N. Carolina

* Please somebody tell me why we ran the read Option with Tate in the Red Zone when Dallas was killing it??

*Bunch formation sets are a night mare against blitzing DB's bad coaching decision by Enos

*Zion will be fine, Campbell on the other hand

Defense

-A lot of plays where we only rushed 3, the porsters on here obviously couldnt see we were more worried about Franks running then throwing the times we pinned our ears back we got to him and pressured him. He's big and strong and broke the tackles of two sacks. Shaq looks faster as he did the beginning of the year last year he ran down perrine on a few screens.

- Secondary looked good Frierson played awsome. Blades and Hall need to work on their tackling Hall and blades both missed a few. A. Carter played awesome. I see why he started over D. Smith. he can run.

- D Line looked the best against the run as long as I can remember. Ford was unblockable and Bethel played great.
- Rousseau and Hill need to get more PT they caused pressures
- Patchan was solid and recovered a FF
- Jimmy Murphy was haulin *** on KR

In conclusion,

I cant remember a time where we held down an offense of UF's caliber on the road. Although we didnt deserve to win the game we were a muffed punt , a missed FG and dropped td away from winning the game. Both teams were penalized heavily. I think Enos got outcoached by Grantham it happens, but I cant lie im a little worried about it. I will give Enos the benefit of the doubt we were on thorad first start for a freshman QB and two freshman tackles. Their blitzes confused us all night. He went away from motion and crossing routes, guys just were not open and its easy to see on SkyCam. A great team wins that game a good team loses them. Sucks but we couldve won this game. We arent great but these next 3 months will show how good we are.
i think Enos will figure it out. he hasnt called plays since 2017.

I agree. I think Zion has potential. it was campbell who killed us. How bad is Herbert?

Me too, but I don't wear your rose tinted glasses and rah rah optimism after the last 16 years.
I've adapted.
Waiting a season before declaring a team sucks is not wearing rose colored glasses. It's being rational. I was concerned about Richt in 2017. I didn't expect to be 10-0. Likewise, I also wasn't willing to call for his head in 2016.

We obviously need to develop on the O line. We need new people. That takes time. We looked better than we did against Wisconsin using an entirely new offense. Let's see how this season goes before we place all the blame on the new staff.

No one rational has declared this team sucks. However, I'm not sure what the eternal optimism is based on, other than hope (aka rose tint)

Maybe because I want to see my team do well and I'm willing to wait until at least the second game before *****ing.

Do you have children? If so, do they grasp everything and excel on the first attempt?

My daughter's volleyball team started out 0-3, they ended up winning it all because they adapted, improved, and found a way to win. Once they got a taste of victory, they couldn't wait to see if they could extend their streak just one more game. That logic is infectious. Let's see if that happens here.

He’s a true freshman. That’s a good enough reason for me. I originally thought he started doing it after he got the false start penalty, but when I rewatched I saw him also doing it before.

Honestly, I have high hopes for him

Agree or disagree, Major Applewhite with spread offense would have been preferable to Enos pro-style

Until the OL talent get to a P5 level we certainly need to be a spread team and that do not equal to not run the ball. It is painful to watch slow developing PA as your vase offense with no OL.

@blackvern the wide receivers may not have been open but you don’t think Jarren had the opportunity to take more chances regardless if the receivers were covered?

Compared to NKosis game against FSU last year (4TDs, 0 INTs)... Jarren definitely had the cleaner game passing but he also played the safest. Nkosi took chances throwing the ball and it paid off... the Jeff Thomas catch up the middle between two defenders being one.

Do you think NKosi would’ve been better mentally prepared for this game in terms of not having as many delay of game penalties, being more decisive as a runner, and taking more chances challenging their DBs when there were opportunities to do so?

Night and day difference from the front 7 we faced vs uf compared to FSU last year. **** even our oline it was a night and day difference from our oline vs the 2019 oline. They weren’t THAT bad , no where near 10 sacks. They only gave up a total of 26 last year with like 4 in the first game or so

After re-watching the game today......Campbell was ALOT worse than Zion. Not that Zion was good, but if/when Scaife is kicked back outside, it should be for Campbell.
It was so many plays where Zion was so slow when the ball was snapped and never got out of his stance and the edge rusher just got up the field. Both were bad, Zion gave up multiple sacks in first half and had multiple in the 4th. He’s a true freshman but imo he’s not ready. Not saying Campbell is either has he was getting beat some and had far too many penalties.

Problem is if you didn’t run as many slow develop plays the oline particularly OTs wouldn’t have been exposed like that

Your last sentence is the key, I think a couple of Zion's sacks were a result of HORRID play calls by Enos. I see more athleticism in Zion than I do in Campbell. On another of the sacks that came from Zion's side I'd argue Jarren held the ball too long and should have thrown it away.

Unless you're gonna kick BOTH Scaife and Donaldson outside, I think Zion should get one more shot.
