Big plays, big moments, big calls are often what’s discussed and highlighted, but I want to give some flowers to 4 players who made critical plays that completely changed the outcome of this game:
-CJ
-Arroyo
-X
-Baron
1. CJ
Late in the 2nd w/ VT going up 2 scores w/ a deflating 58 yrd FG., VT chose to squib kick, & Chris almost housed it. With 15 secs left, he gave us excellent field position giving us an opportunity to score before half. Result? We score 3, making the score 24-17 at half, instead of 24-14.
2. Arroyo
Down 10, & Miami driving late 3rd, there was miscommunication between Ward & X, leading to an int by former Cane, K. Spencer. Spencer had a convoy escorting him for a pick 6. Arroyo hustled all the way down field as Spencer was coasting, resulting in a TD saving tackle. Result? Instead of VT going up 34-17, we held them to a FGA, which they chose to abort for a fake. They scored 0 on that turnover, & went down to score changing momentum. 27-24.
3. X
Late in the 4th on a crucial 4th & 3, we NEEDED to convert. Unfortunately X lost his footing right as the ball was delivered. While on his back, not giving up on the play, X extends himself to save an incompletion. Result? Drive continues, leading to the go ahead TD. 34-38
4. Baron
Baron didn’t have a great game, like at all; BUT, he made a huge play both from a time and yardage perspective. On VT’s last drive, Drones evades the rush, & there is nothing but green grass ahead of him. As Baron was trying to retract, he reaches out and grabs Drones’ jersey from behind, yanking him down. Result? This not only led to 13, precious secs coming off the clock, but it forced VT to burn a crucial T.O.
If these 4 instances don’t happen in a game won by 4 points, we’re mopey af this weekend. That’s a 6-14 point swing in our favor based upon these unsung heroes.
