A CLOSER LOOK

Quarterbacks

Stephen Morris only tested in the bench last year, putting up 275 pounds. This year he benched 285 pounds. He also had a 375-pound squat and 308-pound power clean. Ryan Williams put on significant strength and size. His power clean went from 230 to 242 and his bench from 265 to 275, and his vertical went from 25.5 inches to 28 inches. His body fat increased from 12.8 percent to 16.4 percent. Gray Crow made the biggest jump for this spot in the weight room - he went from 335 to 375 in the squat and from 250 to 265 in the bench. His vertical also improved from 22.5 to 25.5 inches.

Running backs

Eduardo Clements, coming off surgery, is almost back to where he was pre-injury. His bench last fall was 415; it is now back to 415. His power clean was 242 last year and is now 235, and his bench was 270 and is now 265. His body fat went from 9.3 percent last year to 11.1 percent. Duke Johnson made strides, increasing his squat from 375 to 405 and his bench from 285 to 315. Dallas Crawford's strength numbers remained similar (405 pound squat this year with a 264-pound power clean and 315-pound bench) but his vertical went from 27 inches to 29.5.

Wide receivers

One of the biggest gains here came from Jontavious Carter, whose squat went from 300 to 345 and had his power clean go from 220 to 252. Phillip Dorsett also made nice strides, going from a 385-pound squat to 405 pounds with his power clean improving from 252 to 274. His vertical also went off the charts, from 33 inches last year to 39 this year. In addition to going from a 4.6 to a 4.4 in the 40, Herb Waters also went from a 315-pound squat to 365 and improved his power clean from 176 to 252. His vertical went from 33 to 35 inches and his body fat decreased from 6.5 percent to 5.1 percent. Malcolm Lewis is still working to get his strength back coming off injury. He squatted 375 pounds last year and is now at 355, and his power clean was at 252 and is now 242. His vertical went down three inches to 26.5, but his bench went up from 265 to 300. He's working to lose body fat - he was at eight percent pre-injury and is now at 10.4 percent.

Tight ends

Asante Cleveland's strength numbers went up (from a 355-pound squat to 365, from a 252 power clean to 274 and from a 300 bench to 305) but perhaps the biggest stride he made was reducing his body fat from 14.9 percent to a trim 11 percent. He's lost almost 10 pounds from last season, giving him more mobility. Clive Walford only tested in the bench and vertical last year (330 and 31.5 respectively) - he had a 335-pound bench and 31.5-inch vertical this year. His body fat increased from 15.8 to 19.2, and he's put on close to 10 pounds.

Offensive line

Ereck Flowers made a huge jump up in this group. He went from a 365-pound squat to 425, his power clean went from 237 to 242 and his bench went from 350 to 405. His vertical also improved from 25 to 26.5, and his 31.2 percent body fat from last year is now at 25.8 percent. Seantrel Henderson only tested in the power clean (252) and bench (345) last year. This year he power cleaned 274 pounds and had a 335-pound bench. His body fat is 27.7 percent. Brandon Linder's bench jumped up 20 pounds, to 455. Coming off shoulder surgery Shane McDermott is working his way back. His squat went from 500 last year to 455, and his bench went from 415 to 405. But his power clean went from 286 to 308 and his body fat percentage went from 24.7 to 21.3. Jared Wheeler's squat went from 385 to 405 and his bench went from 320 to 345.

Defensive line

Anthony Chickillo made big strides, going from a 435 squat to 465 and improving his power clean from 318 to 342. Corey King only tested in the bench last year and did 425 pounds - he did 470 this year in addition to a 430-pound squat and 264-pound power clean. Jelani Hamilton only tested in the bench last year (330) and that is now 375. Earl Moore impressed, going from a 495-pound squat to 525. His body fat also went from 27.8 percent to 21.7.Olsen Pierre's strength numbers remained similar (425-pound squat this year with a 274-pound power clean and 375-pound bench), but he cut his body fat from 30.4 percent to 22.4. Curtis Porter's 535 pound squat was second-best on the team, and he improved his bench from 385 to 405 while his power clean went from 345 to 320. Luther Robinson went from a 425-pound squat to 445, his power clean went from 318 to 342, and his bench went from 355 to 385. Linebackers

Tyrone Cornileus reshaped his body, going from a 415-pound squat to 455, from a 265-pound power clean to 286 and from a 335-pound bench to 340. Jimmy Gaines only tested in the bench last year (325), and he benched 330 this year. His squat was 500 and his power clean was 308. Raphael Kirby made a huge leap in the squat, going from 440 last year to 515, and his power clean went from 301 to 318. He gained 14 pounds. Tyriq McCord went from a 415 squat to 470, and his bench went from 300 to 345. Denzel Perryman was the team champion in the squat (555, up from 515) and was second in the power clean (342, up from 318). He was fifth in the bench (435, up from 400). His body fat went from 7.1 to 13.7, and he put on 16 pounds since last year.

Defensive backs

Tracy Howard had the biggest gains here, going from a 300-pound squat to 365 with his power clean going from 220 to 232 and his bench from 265 to 275. Nate Dortch made nice gains across the board, going from a 245-pound squat to 265 and improving his power clean from 220 to 230 while his bench improved from 205 to 225. Ladarius Gunter had similar strides (345 squat improved to 365 and power clean went from 274 to 301). Gunter's vertical jumped up from 27.5 to 30.5 inches. Rayshawn Jenkins was another DB with significant progress in the weight room, going from a 355-pound squat to 370 while improving his power clean from 242 to 265 and his bench from 305 to 320. His body fat went from 11.3 to 15.9 percent, and his vertical went from 35 to 30.5. Kacy Rodgers' gains: He went from a 425-pound squat to 455, from a 286-pound power clean to 308, and from a 370-pound bench to 400. Antonio Crawford made a big jump in the bench, going from 245 to 280. His 176-pound power clean from last year improved to 181, and his squat stayed at 275. Deon Bush's numbers took a little bit of a hit as he comes back from injury. His squat went from 435 to 405 but his power clean stayed at 264 and he improved his bench press from 295 to 335.

Special teams

Kicker Matt Goudis went from a 245-pound squat to 305, and his power clean improved from 206 to 242 while his bench went from 215 to 235. Punter Pat O'Donnell is a transfer, and he's a weight room standout. He tested at a 365-pound squat, 264-pound power clean and 365-pound bench.

THE TEAM

The team average took a jump in virtually every category tested compared to a year ago.

Overall the numbers are eye-popping.

A year ago the team's average in the squat was 377.5 pounds. Now it's 397.6. The power clean team average went from 255.17 pounds last year to 269.7 this year. And the bench press went from 319.45 pounds in 2012 to 327.85. The vertical jump testing remained basically the same, going from 28.92 inches to 29.02, and the team's body fat also remained almost unchanged, going from 14.88 percent to 14.78 percent. But combined with the weight gain that's impressive - last year the average weight for a Hurricane was 230.7 pounds; this year it's 236.05 pounds. Given that the body fat percentage remained virtually unchanged, that means the average player gained over five pounds of muscle in the off-season.

Broken down by position:

For the DB group the average squat went from 350.4 to 370.7, the average power clean from 241.6 to 246.9, and the bench from 287 to 294.7. The vertical decreased from 31.4 to 29.8, but that is deceiving because Deon Bush tested at 37.5 last year (best in the group) and didn't participate this year as he was rehabbing from injury.

For the DL group the average went from 409.5 in the squat to 443.9, from 275.7 in the power clean to 288.4, from 348.8 in the bench to 387.2, and the vertical average stayed at 26.6. The line's body fat percent increased from 23.6 to 25.8 percent. The average weight of the linemen went from 273.5 pounds last year to 290.9 pounds this year.

For the LB group the average went from 411.1 in the squat to 437.3, from 282.3 in the power clean to 290.1, from 335.5 in the bench to 346.7, and the vertical went from 31.8 to 30.6. The group's body fat percentage went from 7.8 to 12.4. The average weight of the linebackers went from 214.5 pounds last year to 233.5 pounds this year.

For the WR group the average went from 315.0 pounds in the squat to 359.5, the power clean went from 216.3 to 243.9, the bench went from 265.4 to 279, and the vertical went from 31.0 to 31.8.

For the OL group the average went from 428.1 pounds in the squat to 428.5, the power clean improved from 273.9 to 294.7 and the bench went from 375.0 to 376.5. The group's body fat percentage went from 18.4 to 18.3, and the group went from averaging 303.9 pounds per player to 309.4.

For the RB group the average went from 406.4 pounds in the squat last year to 414.4, the power clean went from 264.3 to 267.3 and the bench went from 331.3 to 333.9. This group also went from a 30.3 vertical to 29.9 but put on over 10 average pounds of muscle, from 202.6 pounds last year to 213.3 this year. The body fat percent stayed virtually the same, from 16.5 percent to 16.6 percent.

Inside the Weight Room: Offense

QUARTERBACKS

The averages were down across the board here from last spring, in large part due to Stephen Morris (292 power clean, 280 bench) departing.

The individual breakdown:

Ryan Williams' testing remained the same as last year in the squat (325) and bench (285), but his vertical made a nice jump up from 25.5 to 27.5.

"The body composition with Ryan Williams, you can tell he has a lot of overall size and strength," Swasey said. "His body looks the part. He has good size, good weight (228 pounds). He's looking good. The thing with him is continuing staying quick and sharp, overall be relatively strong pound for pound.

"He was at 236 (when he arrived at UM) and we had to change his body composition. Now he's looking real good. He's more leaner as far as body fat."

Kevin Olsen is in his first spring, and he tested at 315 in the squat, 208 in the power clean and 255 in the bench. He also showed off his athleticism with a 29-inch vertical.

"He's on schedule," Swasey said of Olsen. "Looking at his blood line (with Greg his brother) he's a guy that is definitely going to continue to develop. He'll be a nice-sized kid. He's at 206 (pounds)."

Swasey said Olsen's goal weight for the regular season is 210 pounds.

Gray Crow went from a 375 squat to 395 pounds, and his power clean improved 10 pounds to 230 while his bench went from 260 to 275.

RUNNING BACKS

Overall the backs position improved its averages nicely, from a 375-pound average in the squat last spring to 392.1 now and from 243.0 to 258.9 in the power clean and 311.3 to 315 in the bench press.

The individual numbers:

Duke Johnson was still able to test coming off injury, and overall he's ahead of where he was last spring. He tested at 405 in the squat (from 385 last spring), and his power clean went up from 248 to 269 while his bench went from 300 to 340 pounds. He had a 31-inch vertical after showing off at 36 inches last spring. He's also put on around 10 pounds since a year ago.

"Duke went up in his weight, is at about 205, 206," Swasey said. "He's already back around (pre-injury) numbers, so that's very encouraging. He's got his upper body strength back an everything else.

"What he has done is from Day 1 once he was cleared to do everything (post-injury) he worked his tail off throughout the bowl time and continued. He hasn't taken a lot of time off. Even when they are supposed to be off he wanted to keep working. It really has paid off for him and showed."

Swasey said that Johnson is using the time off this spring "to get as thick as he can and pad up and be ready to go."

Gus Edwards' first spring results were impressive: A 425-pound squat, 323-pound power clean and 300-pound bench. He also had a 33-inch vertical at 235 pounds.

"He can run a 4.5 (in the 40)," Swasey said.

Walter Tucker's first spring numbers were impressive. He had a 335-pound squat, 264 power clean and 330 bench. Tucker has run a 4.48 40.

"He's explosive, very powerful," Swasey said. "Him and Gus fall in that category of Najeh Davenport as far as speed (and being a bigger back). We're starting to look real good with depth and size (at tailback)."

Freshman Joseph Yearby is coming off injury, and he tested at 365 in the squat, 164 in the power clean and 260 in the bench.

"Duke is a little bit ahead of him (in the recovery from injury stage), but he's squatting, doing everything in here, just not all the running," Swasey said. "But he's on schedule, is strong."

WIDE RECEIVERS

Overall the wide receivers group had a big jump in one area - bench press, which went from 265.0 last spring to 280.9 now. The squat average went from 343.5 to 339.0, and the power clean went from 236.6 to 222.6 (Allen Hurns' departure and Phillip Dorsett not testing this spring hurt the numbers).

The individual number breakdown:

Stacy Coley's first spring testing was impressive - he had a 275 squat, 196 power clean and 225 bench while verticalling 31.5 inches.

"He's up, weighs about 185 now from 170 (when he arrived)," Swasey said.

Herb Waters went from a 335-pound squat to 345; his power clean went from 252 to 237; and his bench went from 265 to 295. His vertical made a nice jump from 33 to 35 inches.

"He's doing well," Swasey said. "We have a deep group (of receivers)."

D'Mauri Jones made nice increases spring to spring, going from a 335-pound squat to 375 pounds, moving up in the power clean from 210 to 247 and increasing his bench from 260 to 265. He also had a 30-inch vertical (29.5 last spring).

Rashawn Scott saw his squat go from 355 to 385, his power clean went down from 264 to 252, and his bench went from 305 to 265. He increased his vertical from 32 to 33 inches and he gained five pounds spring to spring.

"D'Mauri came on and Rashawn is doing real good," Swasey said.

Garrett Kidd impressed with a 345-pound squat (325 last spring), 220 power clean (213 last spring) and 215 bench (205 last spring). He also improved his vertical from 32 to 33.5 inches.

"Garrett is a 4.6 (in the 40)," Swasey said.

Freshman Braxton Berrios is injured and only tested in the bench (295).

Malcolm Lewis didn't test.

"It's a good group, for the most part a real good group," Swasey said of the receivers.

* Dorsett arrived at UM as a 168-pounder; he's topped out at 185 pounds but has now lost some weight competing in track.

TIGHT ENDS

The averages at this spot are about the same as a year ago (418.3 average squat last spring to 421.7 now; 276 power clean to 281.9 now; and a 342.2 bench average last year to 335.0 now).

The individual numbers:

One year in the system has made a big difference for Standish Dobard. He came in with a 315-pound squat; that's now up to 405. And his power clean went from 247 to 274 while his bench went from 310 to 320.

"He went up from 315 to 405, just ridiculous on his numbers," Swasey said.

Beau Sandland also made huge strides in the weight room. He saw his squat go from 350 to 415, and his power clean went from 264 to 308 while his bench jumped from 310 to 370. His vertical also went from 29 to 30.

Jake O'Donnell saw his squat go down 10 pounds (to 425) but he pushed up his power clean from 286 to 296 and his bench went from 315 to 325.

"Stan has been good, we're expecting good things out of Beau - it's been a lot of good development with those guys," Swasey said. "That's a good solid group."

Clive Walford didn't test due to injury.

"He's doing well (in recovery)," Swasey said.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The offensive line's average strength testing made a huge jump from last spring. In 2013 the average squat was 403.1; now it's 455.0. And the bench press average went from 367.7 to 377.5; the power clean decreased slightly, from 285.0 to 276.2.

Individual movers:

Jon Feliciano went up 50 pounds in the squat from last spring, to 485, and he went from a 337 to 364 power clean. His bench also made a big jump, from 355 to 405.

Ereck Flowers likewise made a big move up in a couple of categories, going from a 370 squat to 445 while improving his bench from 375 to 415. His power clean went from 252 to 230.

Danny Isidora saw his squat go up from 425 to 455; his power clean improved to 342 from 320 and his bench went up 20 pounds to 435.

Sunny Odogwu only tested in the bench, and that saw a huge improvement from last spring, jumping from 320 pounds to 395 pounds.

Taylor Gadbois only tested in the bench (395) and vertical (30) this spring - that's up from a 360 bench and 25.5 vertical last year. Gadbois had struggled with conditioning in the past but is doing well in that category now.

"Over time it's just confidence, repetition," Swasey said.

Freshman KC McDermott put up big numbers coming in with a 380-pound squat, 242-pound power clean and 355-pound bench while verticalling 21.5 inches. Fellow freshman Trevor Darling also showed his strength with a 365 squat, 242 power clean and 315 bench press. He also had a 22-inch vertical.

"They're some of the biggest (freshmen) we've had come through here," Swasey said of the two linemen. "With all the lifting, high school training, a lot of kids are coming in pretty developed."

Of the overall offensive line group, Swasey said, "They look solid. It's a good group. I'm real impressed."

Phillip Dorsett, Vertical, plus his 40 time. Combined with a good healthy season. Could vault him into 2nd round territory. I think size would be only thing to stop from first round. That's some freak numbers. His 40 time alone will give him a good look. Can't teach that kind of speed.

Jamal Carter: 4.67 40 (4.62 best), 4.52 20, 20 reps of 225, 485 squat, 318 power clean, 395 bench press, 30 vertical

this man is doing LB numbers... he is gonna kill someone...

Nobody talking about Herb as always . he put it up a 4.39!!! 4.14 20 yd. and 310 bench that impressive. his reps of 225 is not bad but need to improve.

Herb Waters: 4.39 40 (4.33 best), 4.14 20, 11 reps of 225, 365 squat, 276 power clean, 310 bench press, 35.5 vertical

Lol you people are crazy. Kaaya has never been through a complete offseason and you are already bashing the kid. He wasn't a runner in HS and will never be. He will have huge weight room gains when he goes through Winter and Spring workouts next year. Durant couldn't even do 185 on the Bench when he came in the NBA and look how that turned out.

Antonio Crawford vs Corn Elder vs Artie Burns....

This team is not a 9 or 10-win team.

Those numbers are reflective of the MAC level recruiting Golden has been executing to the last 4-years. Not enough top-level athletes to compete.

That's a 7-win roster if I've ever seen one.

SMH

We got kids breaking all-time records from some of our greatest players yet our numbers are terrible.

LOL

I think teams (including the combine) should test the 40 in two different ways:

1) Off the player's movement (tests raw speed)
2) Off the gun like in track and field. This would test raw speed and reaction time/anticipation etc.

If I were evaluating a guy, I'd like to know both times. Could be quite telling.

Yawn........we here about this every year. Holla at me wen we some results on the field. This is for stat geeks to argue bout for the next month or so....for example Dorsett numbers pretty much blow Coley's out the water but who would u rather put yo faith in on the field??

Anthony Chickillo: 4.91-second average 40-yard dash (4.85 best), 4.38 20-yard shuttle
Trent Harris: 5.09 40 (4.96 best), 4.60 20-yard shuttle
Demetrius Jackson: 4.85 40 (4.71 best), 4.39 20
Chad Thomas: 4.91 40 (4.82 best), 4.50 20
Mike Smith: 5.22 40 (5.09 best), 4.99 20
Terry McCray: 5.14 40 (5.07 best), 4.69 20

something isn't right about these numbers. Chick is faster (except for d-jack) and more explosive and more agile (20 yard shuttle) than all these edge rushers we brought in? mike smith running a 5.22??? did he trip? I just can't believe that Harris, Smith, and McCray couldn't break a 5.0 40. could bad technique cost you .2-.3?? coaches had to be starting the clock early or something.

When you're a NT, the most important part of your strength is you squat force. Louis Nix III of Notre Dame and other players like him squat in the 700 pound vicinity. We need Wyche in that area and Swasey was quoted yesterday as saying his base strength is really concerning. No way he only squats 275, but even 475 is underwhelming for what we need at the position.

I think they should do it in their pads and helmet and from their positions natural starting position (Hand on ground for lineman..). I mean that's why I really liked Manziel's pro day. It just makes so much sense for them to workout in the same things they wear during games. Maybe not the bench press but I don't see why they don't do the standing long jump, High Jump, 40, catching drills, etc with shoulder pads and a helmet on.
