MMA UFC Fight Island

Usman-Masvidal was like one of those GSP fights from the late 2000s, early 2010s. Its not ****, but when you're a champion, you just want to get out without any risks and you just grind that **** out through 5 rounds.

An extended training camp for Jorge wouldn't help him solve the problem you all just witnessed.

Came to say the exact same thing. This type of grind works for and takes GSP to goat status buy Usman is a bum?

Did you really expect a champion to cater to a challengers strengths on 6 days notice? (Not you, the ones calling it trash or bad for the sport.)

I expected him to try for a finish at some point.

I said the same thing about GSP when he laid on Dan Hardy for five rounds.

The difference is he was already a star due to entertaining fights on big shows.

Fans complain about everything because they're all just a bunch of McGregor fans who want every fight to be a brawl.

"Fans" hate on Jon Jones, hate on Adesanya, hate on Usman, hate on Khabib, hate on Cejudo, it's wash rinse repeat every event, fans are always bìtchin about every fight not being a knock down drag out brawl because they just don't really get the sport & have a lack of appreciation for the technical aspects of martial arts they go beyond Roman coliseum style death matches.

These dudes are literally some of the greatest in the world at what they do & rarely ever off their game, rarely every lose but "fans" just can't stand it because it's not stylistically a bloodbath fight, they hate to see them dominate.

This exactly. “Fans” aren’t really MMA fans; they’re boxing fans. The first M is “mixed.” And the mixed part is what they don’t get. It was pretty obvious what Usman was going to do because that’s the part of his game that he could use to overwhelm and beat Jorge 99 out of 100 times with.

Why would he box Jorge and take the very real chance of losing just to appease fans who hate him anyway when he knew he’d whip him easily doing what he’s way better than Jorge at? If you’re not a fan of elite wrestling then don’t watch Usman fights.

I remember Matt Hughes and Sean sherk tkos but mostly it was always lots of wrestling lol

Nobody was yelling for Khabib to box Conor and Poirier.

I like fights with violence, whether it’s on the ground or the feet. Winning on “Octagon control” is boring whether you’ve been a fan for 25 years or 25 minutes.

There is a reason the sport made a big leap after the “lay-and-pray” era ended. And it wasn’t because the fighters were becoming less skilled.

You and I usually share similar takes, but here's one where we're on different planets.

In team sports like football, basketball, and baseball......winning is all that matters. No apologies need to be made.

Boxing and UFC, how you win matters. These guys all care about being the best and being in the discussion for GOAT. There's a reason guys like Mayweather and Usman are hated and it has absolutely nothing to do with "winning". It's absolutely unwatchable garbage and an exploitation of the highly subjective "points" system.
How they win matters to you. It doesn’t matter to them.

Good thing about MMA is guys don’t typically stay on top for prolonged periods because it’s such a grind. So Usman will meet his match soon enough, and you guys can hate on the next champ for not taking enough risks with his money.

I would take a wrestling grind win over masvidal vs matt serra knocking me out any day of the week.

I understand you didn’t like it. Lots of people didn’t like how Nebraska won either. But they weren’t going to suddenly mix in some Air Raid just to make you happy while they lose.

Usman’s job is to win. If you guys hate his fights then quit stealing them on hacked streams. If he starts costing White money, then White will find a way to vanquish him. Usman only cares about winning, and so far his methods have been foolproof. And White only cares about money.

If that was his only job, he’d get paid more.

You can win boring. But once you take a couple losses you are out of the UFC like Jake Shields and Jon Fitch.
You're making silly arguments just because you don't like Usman's style. In your mind, Usman should abandon what works for him flawlessly so far just to be more entertaining and potentially start losing. He's probably going to make more money as an undefeated champ than he would if he decides to abandon what works for him and gets knocked out 3 times in a row in Tough Man Contest slugfests.

I have a feeling the Shields story goes beyond his style. Shields was boring, not all that good, and I think he was flirting with another promotion, which is a much quicker way to get on White's bad side than being an undefeated champion, who overwhelms opponents with his wrestling. Fitch has been in and out of the UFC forever, and was never at Usman's level.

I'm not sure what kind of outcome you expected from Usman v. Masvidal. I mean there were several posters - myself included - that told you Usman was going to grind it out and thats what he did.

Moving forward, Gil Burns fight for Usman is gotta be up next. For Masvidal...it just opens him up for some better stylistic fights.

Not asking him to stand and trade with Masvidal.

Am asking him to try and advance his position from stalling him against the cage. If you're such an elite wrestler, get him on the ground and GnP him.

Instead we were treated to 25 minutes of shoulder shrugs and foot stomps.

Like I said, it is what it is, but Usman's the only loser after last night. Dana White won't be offering him more money as the casual fans think he's boring af.

Does Masvidal give Usman more of a contest with a real training camp? Same result?

Watching I felt Usman imposed his strategy on Madividal and Gamebred had no answer. Not sure if more camp changes result by much.

Now though, perhaps Masividal regroups and comes back a different fighter.

Will there be #2?

There will not be a number 2 because this is a horrible matchup for Masvidal.

With a full camp the big difference would be increased cardio from Jorge but he isn’t going to suddenly learn to wrestle and become a world class grappler.

Masvidal has a shot in any fight because of his excellent striking. But Marty would use the same game plan and grind him out again.

Everyone hates the guy (not me) but Covington is the best matchup vs Marty. Their first fight was excellent because Colby can negate the wrestling game of Usman. I had Colby winning that fight until it was stopped. If the ref who let Aldo get smashed for 2 minutes before stopping that fight had been in the cage for Colby Usman it may have been a majority draw.
