Ty Simpson (is not yet in the portal)

Unlike Ward and Beck, Simpson is likely a top 2 round draft pick. Questions then become, can you sell him on staying in college and transferring to improve your draft stock (worked for Ward and Beck), and would he make more at Miami if he stayed?

For reference, Jaxon Dart went bottom of the first round and is making south of $5 million per year. A number similar to what we gave Beck this year likely makes it a fairly enticing proposition.
I think Dart (and all first rounders) have four year guaranteed contracts though.

It just depends who would take him. He’s not good enough for AZ or Cleveland to reach that early. Maybe the Rams or Steelers, but that puts him into fringe day 2 position.

The Rams having two firsts makes me think he doesn’t slide out of R1. And let’s just be real, going to the Rams and McVay is best case scenario for nearly every QB.

Al.com and a 247 writer, Scarborough, both believe he’s going to the draft or returning to Alabama. They say it is unlikely he will portal out

I really doubt he goes back to Bama. Bama is paying a ton of money for Keelon Russell and there’s going to be pressure to play him next season especially if the offense struggles and Deboer starts feeling the heat.

A situation like that could easily result in Simpson’s stock tanking. I think he either goes to the draft or portal.

going back to Bama would be a bad decision, I agree. Not sure if Russell will be the starter over Mack though. DeBoer has kept him around this long and he was the backup all season long. Austin Mack wasn’t a five star but he was a top 100recruit.

It is a weak QB year, maybe what ultimately tips the decision.

No QB with the recruiting status of Russell is willing to ride the pine for 2 consecutive seasons, let alone the fact that this is not the Alabama of the Saban Era and they can't have the same benefit of the doubt of those years.

If Simpson stays there I expect both of the other QBs in the portal.

Macks arm really flashed
Pretty mobile for his size, too.
Was he recruited by deboer?

Has there been any semblance of some info that the staff or Simpson himself are interested? Or is this fairy tale land? (To clarify I think he'd be great here)

Yes and Ryan Grubb their OC; he enrolled and redshirted at Washington then transferred over to Alabama with DeBoer. He reclassified up a grade as well. Turns 20 in June

It may sounds absurd but I really think that for Simpson declaring for the Draft is more "safer" than going back to Alabama, with how the season ended imagine what would happen at the first sign of offensive struggles.

The smart route for him It's either Draft or portal, imho.

Went to look up his stats and realized he is 23 years old. He is literally just a month younger than Beck.

Crazy.
This surprised me as well. So i double checked it;

Beck went to college a year early and Ty Simpson went a year late; so technically they are both aged as class of 2021 HS recruits but ended up separated w/ Beck enrolling in January 2020 versus Simpson enrolling in January 2022.

I really had no idea that Beck enrolled at UGA right after he turned 17. Todd Hartley and James Coley were his two main recruiters, he flipped from Alabama 🏈 after deciding to forgo playing baseball in college (UF).

Loy at 247 stated he believed Oregon and Tennessee were lead contenders if he returns. Think Raiola is trending Oregon. Simpson is from Tennessee tho, might be a tough get.

Simpson declaring for the NFL is the ultimate bet on yourself. Or he could return to college, commit to Miami and be a preseason Heisman candidate on a preseason top 3 team, in a very winnable conference which guarantees a CFP run, and easy first round grade. Oh and make $5m.

The NFL front offices are not exactly enamoured of that Veer and Shoot offense, mainly for the WRs but it can't be any different for QBs.

I'd choose another program in my money year tbh.

Yeah it seems Simpson was held back by his dad to further “develop” his football ability. Basically to give him a leg up on younger guys and seem better in HS than he actually was. Used to see stuff like this all the time in the past before enrolling early began the thing to do.

I don’t see him coming back to college at 24 if he gets any kind of decent draft-able grade

I dunno...not willing to put any money on it or anything, but I have this weird feeling like Mario is working over Simpson a la Ward, and he will end up in O&G.

BTW, if Simpson came to UM, the Canes would immediately become a top 3 preseason bet for the natty. Simpson would be the best case single year QB transfer for this year. Mario knows this.

I would just offer him the $5 million+ or whatever it takes to match the low 1st round contract.

Right now I’m expecting him to declare for the draft regardless for leverage just like Cam and Beck did. And if the feedback is strong enough maybe he does just go to the draft.
