the evisceration of the recruiting class after they fired Shannon and hired Golden is actually proof Golden was a cancer. the early recruits and local coaches just saw it early.

Golden was just using us to recruit for the job he actually wanted, and coached and recruited every year like it. in
 
Golden had no love for the U. Golden failed as a Miami head coach. Golden is currently failing as a NFL coach. Golden’s only success was the Temple teams where he was using partial qualifiers and guys who’d be at Michigan if not for grades to beat up on inferior talent.

Because Golden is a bad coach. who people want to pretend is good for mystery reasons. he failed cuz he isn’t a good coach, not because of the alignment of the stars and how the sun is shining off venus or whatever excuse they want to make for a guy who didn’t even want to be our coach.

i graduated from HS in Jersey in 05. I have buddies/ ex-teammates who played for him at UVA (he was DC) and at Temple. this was he consistent go to. at UVA there weren’t good enough athletes, at UM they weren’t smart enough/ couldn’t stay in his system. none of them have ever said a good thing about him.

i side eye anyone who defends this clown. .

If I recall correctly, didn’t Tracy Howard intercept a screen for a pick six and got the cold shoulder or even got *****ed out by Golden or Dorito when he went to the sideline, for “freelancing“. Am I remembering this correctly?

Walford got a similar reception by Golden after his td in 2014 against FSU. Think Golden was still ****ed about his fumble to open up the first series.

I believe it

I was somewhat familiar with him at Temple I actually really liked the hire all things considered (low bar for me at the time)

But it pretty quickly devolved into excuses. The Cloud was somewhat legitimate so it took some time to really see it play out

I could count on one hand the positives from 2011-mid 2015.

1) Watching guys like Duke, Perryman, Hurns, Dorsett, Corn Elder, Morris, Bush, etc.
2) Beating Florida in 2013
3) Beating Osu in 2011
4) Getting fired after the embarrassing Clemson loss

He was the only coach that never gave me hope. While Shannon and Diaz also sucked, they kind of gave me glimmer of hope that that might right the ship. Again, the key word is "glimmer", it's not like I thought Shannon and Diaz would lead us to a natty, but I thought they might make us consistently good or competitive. I never thought that with Golden, even during the 2013 season. Just seemed like we weren't that good, even though we had a winning season.

Yep. It was like the first play of the game inside Virginia's 20 yd line.

For real though, who hires a coach with a losing record? Yeah, Golden was a giant failure and a loser but the admin were 10x the losers for hiring this dude. Sad.

We only had two commitments when Golden was hired. In a pre-NIL era, is it reasonable to expect him to sign 8 or more blue chippers in the roughly two months that he had? Maybe if we had signed someone with the gravitas of a Stoops or Gruden at that time. Not a defense of him, I’m just not sure how realistic it is to expect a non-Power 5 coach to come in an land a Top 10 class in two months when he was starting essentially from zero.

It does make me wonder - the Shapiro story was first reported on (somewhat vaguely) in the fall of 2010. I wonder how many S FL coaches knew of it and would have steered their kids clear of Miami regardless of the coach.

You’re making my point, although you’re presenting it as a defense.

Golden failed because he was a bad coach and a non-inspiring hire. he couldn’t overcome being a non-inspiring hire because he lacked the talent or skill as a coach to either out-coach and out recruit his circumstance. we would have been far better off if we’d kept Shannon for a year - who is and was a far better coach, and would have delivered a better recruiting by class.

I get your point. I’m just not certain if anyone coming in to a class that has two players as of December (Chickillo and one other) can then turn around and land a top class in just eight weeks. And that’s what Miami needed just to break even - very strong class, because they were losing a lot of talent after the 2010 season.

Aside from continuity, a benefit to Randy having the 2011 season is that Bridgewater signs with the Canes. With him you get instant competition with Morris in 2012 and he’s probably the starter that year and 2013.
