Any coach entering their second year with the breaking Shapiro scandal and the initial threat of a death penalty - coupled with institutional scrutiny and media attention would have struggled to recruit in 2012. That’s just a simple fact.

We needed a Top 1-3 class that year just to get out blue chip ratio close to what it had been just two years earlier. The attrition and impact of Shannon leaving had that big of an impact.
 
I feel like Fat Al had a lot of players get in trouble with the fuzz. Figueroa, Blue, Gabe Terry, Thomas Finnie to name a few.

Jesus. Yea I joined in 2015 but didn’t start posting until 2017-2018. I know Andrew would always defend Manny when he was HC. ****** weirdo.

He also rushed out onto the field and cradled that wide receiver after his ankle was turned around 180 degrees. Other coaches might have just nodded and put the next guy in. And after he was let go, he visited a player’s parent who was in the hospital.

Golden wasn’t evil. He just didn’t work out, for various factors.

No he just ruined many kids careers by forcing them to gain weight and play in a scheme that did nothing to showcase their talent much less help the team win.

Performative bull**** like that moment only changes things for people who are easily duped.

Then don’t take the job but I’m sure you also naively believe he was truly blindsided by the scandal

Richt and Mario would have done the same thing. Stop making it seem like it wasn't all Al's fault.

Nope.

Either he was ill informed (the news was originally out to a limited extent in the fall of 2010) or he was hoping nothing came of it.

Golden did request Chickillo to play out of position and gain weight. He reportedly had Morris play hurt in 2013. He refused to change his scheme. Those outweigh the structural disadvantages that he inherited. If he had pivoted after 2011 to a different DC with a new scheme he might have lasted far longer. That’s one thing that stood out in contrast with Diaz and Cristobal - they didn’t stick with their schemes out of stubbornness.

However the structural disadvantage of a school refusing to spend on infrastructure at a time when major competitors were ramping up spending, an major NCAA investigation and resulting negative recruiting, and an all time low talent level (we had less than half of the blue chips in 2012 that Florida State has now) would have been a very, very challenging hill to climb for any coach pre NIL and transfer portal era, at least in 2012.
 
Butch Davis had the biggest "cloud" ever and went on to build the greatest machine ever put together. Al was just a bad coach, with bad schemes. If that Pedo school would have offered him, he would taken off faster than the former mayor's son did when he left Temple to come to Miami.

Yep, he was certainly ready to leave after 2013 and that definitely eliminated any goodwill from the 9-4 season.

It’s an interesting recruiting question for those in the know…

…what’s worse?

1. FInd out in year 1 that you’re getting hammered by the NCAA and face multiple years of heavy scholarship restrictions

2) Have the NCAA launch a major investigation of your program in year 1, with national media calling for the school to get the death penalty and the NCAA chirping about how the death penalty was not off the table, and having to wait until Year 3 before a resolution

I cant answer that but given where Miami is now and where they are headed makes me give a countless number of these 🖕 to the NCAA for trying to ruin this program when other schools have much more egregious things.

Bro this was one of my first ever recurring holy **** moments. This video is iconic. Wish we had this staff for these boys. I love those teams because of it.

Coach Macho - pretty well-known regular poster on here went to Dorito’s camp and then proceeded to make a thread talking down to everyone about how we just didn’t understand the genius behind his scheme because he went to the clinic and he’s a coach and blah blah blah.

Nah I remember that thread vividly . He said he was excited about how they came out one gapping and blitzing or whatever against a FCS and got scorched for it, naturally. Came back around a week or so later after they got gauged and took the L saying he should have known they’d resort back to conservative bull****.

There were a lot worse defenders of Golden who drank the cyanide in the bunker with him on his last day.

From a recruiting and talent acquisition standpoint, it is amazing how quickly Miami dropped off in the 2010 - 2011 period. Here are the blue chip players outgoing, and incoming:

It ultimately took until 2020 before we got just about back to the blue chip numbers that we had entering the 2010 season.
