Redskins hire former Virginia Tech product Torrian Gray as their defensive backs coach

The Washington Redskins will hire Torrian Gray to become their next defensive backs coach, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Saturday. Gray spent last season coaching defensive backs for the Florida Gators.

Before that, the 42-year-old spent 10 years at Virginia Tech serving as a defensive secondary coach and a passing game coordinator. Gray mentored Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller, a second-team all-American in 2014 who was chosen by Washington in the third round of the 2016 draft. Gray was also on staff when former Redskins safety Kyshoen Jarrett, waived last summer because of nerve damage in his right shoulder, attended Virginia Tech.

Gray, a Lakeland, Fla., native, played safety at Virginia Tech from 1992 to 1996 and helped the Hokies win two Big East championships in his final two seasons. He was named all-Big East during his final three seasons and earned Hokies Outstanding Defensive Back honors in 1996. Gray was drafted 49th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 1997 and retired after two seasons because of a knee injury.

Gray quickly transitioned into coaching and has spent much of his career at the college level. This will be his second NFL coaching position. He spent two seasons as the Chicago Bears’ assistant defensive backs coach, starting in 2004, under then-head coach Lovie Smith before going back to Virginia Tech.

Gray has coached four secondary players who are part of this year’s draft class — Florida cornerbacks Jalen “****” Tabor and Quincy Wilson, Florida safety Marcus Maye and Virginia Tech safety Chuck Clark. CBS Sports projects Tabor as a first-round pick, Wilson a second-rounder, Maye as a third- or fourth-round pick, and Clark either as a seventh-round selection or an undrafted free agent.

The news was first reported by SECCountry.

The hiring fills a significant void on Redskins Coach Jay Gruden’s staff. Washington fired defensive backs coach Perry Fewell last month and attempted to promote former assistant defensive back coach Aubrey Pleasant, but the two sides couldn’t negotiate a deal. Pleasant left Washington to join the Los Angeles Rams’ coaching staff under former Redskins offensive coordinator and current Rams Coach Sean McVay.

Gray’s addition falls in line with Washington’s emphasis to put teachers on its coaching staff as it seeks for a quick turnaround on defense. The Redskins promoted outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky, who contributed to Trent Murphy’s best season of his career in 2016, as the defensive coordinator and added Jim Tomsula, who has been highly regarded as a defensive line coach, to replace former defensive coordinator Joe Barry and defensive line coach Robb Akey.

[Bog: Bruce Allen says a long-term deal for Kirk Cousins isn’t as hard as you think]

The Redskins are trying to have a respectable defense under Gruden after three failed attempts under Jim Haslett and Barry. Their new defensive staff will attempt to coach up its very young roster. Washington’s success will be dependent on Manusky’s scheme, which the team believes will be more aggressive than the past two years under Barry. Manusky, however, did not have much success in nine previous years as an NFL defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, the San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Yet y'all blame the coaches. These kids looked for a reason to go and all this **** abou UM llying and here's this. See if the coaches and parents are real they'lluse this a and say how that ppiece of **** school moves but most likely they won't
True but it doesn't change the fact that Rumph screwed up with Henderson and that tough love bull****. His job is to get them in the door first, then mentor. Not the other way around.

Could you fill me in on what happened between Henderson and Rumph? What was the tough love about?

Edwards and Henderson are like Oopsy, now they get to be coached by an FAU Coach with one year of experience... blah, hahaha... they got played right out the gate! Welcome to Gaytors, fools...

Rumph chewed out Henderson two days before NSD because he walked out of the all star game he was supposed to play in. Supposedly he was upset because he wasn't starting.

Also this is just an anonymous rumor posted on the message board FYI, it has not been confirmed by anyone as of yet

I'm generally skeptical of anonymous rumors and conjecture as well but the story has been corroborated by a few different posters who generally have "insider" information and it fits the timeline if you were following Pete's updates that week.

Good.

We don't need soft dudes with entitlement issues on this squad.

Let him enjoy the business decision with Corey Bell.

IF that's true then I also question what kind of parental figures he has around him too. I have serious doubts about Rumph the recruiter but I can absolutely respect him keeping it real in a situation like that. Funny how we hear so much phony praise from kids/parents/mentors about how great so and so coach is because he "kept it real". The only "real" they really want tends to involve lips constantly planted on asses or the dufflebag variety.

Hahahaha at BJ's own dad selling him out like that. That's the kind of **** that'll turn a kid ghey. He'll want to lash out at his grifter dad in the worst way possible.

Slick Woods doesn't care. He was born a gator cuck. He's too dopey looking to even know Gray was the DB coach. Plus Gray never even thought enough of Slick to introduce himself during the recruiting process.

Triple mojo on Nad Wilson. How does that traitor facquit tell the difference between the egg and the **** on his face right now?

Wasn't Corey Bell a secretary here 4 years ago. Now old Nad Jr. and the other 2 local facquits are off to get schooled up by a secretary.

And next year all the grifters, handlers, advisers and mentors looking out for all these kids' best interest will send more than a handful of kids up the Gainesville.

I am sure these two impressionable little prison bottoms have already bought into whatever UF has told them makes Bell an upgrade.

Confirmed or not - it sounds right.

Glad Rumph did it - if he did. Kid's a quitter. No matter what else he is or can do - he's a quitter.

And I'm glad UF and he are stuck with each other.

Quitting is bad, but literally changing the program you choose because of a stern talking to is by far the most feminine move a man can make.

Wouldn't be surprised if CJ is a transgender man.

If that is the case then fack Henderson! He is a soft entitled punk who will never do ****. The next Tory Mitchell. Edwards can go to **** too. Hilarious! Business decision??? How's that business decision working out for you guys? Corey Bell? LMAO!
