Tom Herman (merged with Herman head coach candidate threads)

The guy they should've hired is the guy who just beat them (and is the type of guy Blake should've given a look if he were a real AD instead of hiring a guy without conducting a job search).

Unfortunately, he'll be going to the NFL next season.
I like Campbell hope he stays. He could be a lifer at ISU. A kirk ferenz of ISU.

Not sure if he has what it takes for the NFL but you maybe right that's where he ends up...

Hot garbage
Not that bad, but the fan base down here is getting really disgruntled. In Year 4 they were expecting significant progress, but despite having a far superior roster on paper Texas finds itself 5-3. Going back to 2010, it's been a really long time in the wilderness for them. The ironic thing is, 13 points is all that separates them from a spot in the national title tournament this year. They had two overtime losses and fell to Iowa State via a fieldgoal.

He turned down an interview request with the Jets last year I believe. He's too good of a coach to spend his whole career at Iowa State, wish we would've considered him here when we had the chance.

I live in Austin and have a buddy on staff. Herman was everyone's first choice 4 years ago but he came with a reputation of being an absolute prick and extremely difficult to work with/play under. He hasn't really endeared himself to the city/fanbase either and that was something that made Mack iconic. This obviously doesn't matter much when you're winning but when you're 21-13 and had huge expectations coming in, it's another story.

Texas has to money to move on from him and I fully expect them to do so at this point. Jimbo has things humming in College Station finally and Baylor and TCU aren't going anywhere either. Not sure who'd they target but Urban will at some point get a courtesy call with little chance he entertains. Patterson from TCU would be an incredible hire but doubt he ever leaves Fort Worth.

Urban isn't coming to UT although I'm sure a call will be made. I live in Austin and the job is far more difficult than it was 20 years ago. Yes you have a ton of money in the program but Jimbo has A&M rolling and Baylor and TCU are really

You honestly are the most pathetic poster on a board of pathetic posters. Why root for the program if you're just going to trash the staff 50 times a day?
The quality of the schedule is far harder over the last ten years than it was for Mack's first ten years. The UT out of conference schedule, save the Ohio State series, was an absolute joke. It was a constant diet of New Mexico States, Wyomings, Rice, and North Texases. It's one of the reasons I never went to a game for the longest time - there was absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Texas would beat these teams. Quite often, it was 35-0 entering the second quarter. The Big 12 in the first decade of the 2000s was also incredibly weak. Oklahoma was the only team that had the talent and coaching staff to beat UT, although the Longhorn would occasionally slip up against Kansas State or Texas Tech. But generally, Mack Brown was good for 9 to 10 wins a season. Recruiting was also far less of a challenge. Mack would get verbal commitments from almost his entire upcoming class the previous April, and they would stick (with the exception of Ryan Perriloux). Recruiting now is harder, with the SEC having made inroads and other Big 12 programs now with nearly a decade of success against Texas. The quality of the Big 12 programs versus Texas has significantly narrowed in the last decade.

Just look at this differential. First 8 games record for UT, going back to 2000 (bold for out of conference):

2000: 7-1 (loss to Oklahoma)
2001: 7-1 (loss to Oklahoma)
2002: 7-1 (loss to Oklahoma)
2003: 6-2 (loss to Oklahoma, Arkansas)
2004: 7-1 (loss to Oklahoma)
2005: 8-0
2006: 7-1 (loss to Ohio State)
2007: 6-2 (loss to Oklahoma, Kansas State)
2008: 8-0
2009: 8-0
2010: 4-4 (loss to Oklahoma, UCLA, Iowa State, Baylor)
2011: 6-2 (loss to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State)
2012: 6-2 (loss to Oklahoma, West Virginia)
2013: 6-2 (loss to Mississippi, BYU)
2014: 3-5 (loss to Oklahoma, BYU, UCLA, Baylor, Kansas State)
2015: 3-5 (loss to Notre Dame, California, Oklahoma State, Iowa State)
2016: 4-4 (loss to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, California, Kansas State,
2017: 4-4 (loss to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, USC, Maryland)
2018: 6-2 (loss to Oklahoma State, Maryland)
2019: 5-3 (loss to Oklahoma, LSU, TCU
2020: 5-3 (loss to Oklahoma, TCU, Iowa State)

as someone who lives in Texas....

their evaluations of kids has been awful on top of getting kids to fit schemes. Been that way since Mack won his natty. They use to tie up with a bow tie their classes during kids junior years and fail to keep seeing development/late bloomers.

they need someone who can properly evaluate talent, charismatic as no matter what UT is a good ole boy school

Something toxic about it...same thing I be thinking about us. Hope it changes for us but I still think Herman can kill it somewhere where it's the right fit.
What UT needs at this point is a Saban or Meyer. An elite level, established coach with a NC tournament pedigree. Failing that, they should consider offering Lincoln Riley whatever it would take to bring him to Texas

Proves the ‘hot OC’ theory of head corch hiring stinks.

A head corch has first and foremost to be a leader, decisive and a motivator and selector of people.

Elite assistants who thrived under top leaders are really tough gambits. Was it them, or Meyer, Saban or whoever who deserves the credit?
He was a Head Coach at Houston before getting the Texas job.

Hiring coaches is hard. Herman had everything on paper to succeed.

Something is weird about the Texas program. It breeds busts.

kids probably partying too much in Austin. Not focused on being great at that program.

****. That is surprising. Is it because the kids just dont like Hermann?
Probably more like, the High School COACHES in Texas don’t like Herman. That “smartest guy in the room” shtick don’t work in a state where winning HS coaches are treated like kings. So, If ur a prick that’s hard to work/play under, you won’t have success there. If they don’t like you, they probably gonna steer (pun intended, 😂🤣) to another program. IDK🤷🏾‍♂️
