Tidbits from a Cane coach

We'll know how good Miami is at NIL when the class is fully signed. The staff is as good as any when it comes to recruiting so they should do as well as basically any staff with a similar budget. I'm curious to see how much booster support Miami really has. They have multiple billionaires involved so they could compete with anyone but it just depends how motivated those people are.

I keep thinking Ruiz' company needs to rebound hard and then he'll have absolute **** you money and he could spend $30 mil a year and literally not feel it at all.

I also hope they forget about an on campus stadium, take the several hundred million dollars that would take, and spread it out over the next 30 years for NIL. That would have a MUCH bigger impact than a new stadium.

As to your last paragraph, absolutely. It's been my experience that people feel comfortable shouting at those they don't know and don't have to stand in front of. When we meet people in real life, we're much more likely to listen to them and consider what they have to say even if it's not what we want to hear. Like you, I'd like people on the internet to act a little more like the people they're going after are actual people. I guess we all have our dreams.
I feel like the internet and social media has made people way too comfortable saying things to people they would never say to their face. I think a lot of the issues we have could be solved if people actually met face to face instead of forming conclusions about people they don’t know based off what someone online told them to think.

I don't know how thread-worthy this is, but it's the offseason. Other than conversations about John Ruiz's net worth--who knew we had so many accountants and financial experts on here?!--and a terrible thread that turned predictably political (good job, guys!), things are pretty slow.

I had an opportunity to speak with a Hurricane coach one-on-one. What an awesome guy-more on that later.

Here are some tidbits. Nothing groundbreaking.

-Of course, the first question I asked him, the question on everyone's mind, what's the outlook for the season. He was quite optimistic so that's reassuring. He thinks we will be much improved, particularly on D. He said that the DL transfers have an opportunity to be "elite." (His word.) He didn't mention names, but I assume he's referring to Mesidor, Agude, and Jackson.
-We've heard this before, but Manny's scheme was based on vertical pressure. Now, we will be taking on more blockers. Presumably, this will be an adjustment for our DL used to the prior scheme. My thought: we may see a team that improves throughout the year as the techniques, schemes become more comfortable with reps.
-Part of the optimism, I think he believes that we were better than a 7-5 team last year. He mentioned the 3 tough losses (UVA, UNC, and FSU). I wasn't going to debate with him that we had some wins that easily could have gone the other way too. Nevertheless, simply stated, internally there's optimism.
-On FSU, a player (who he didn't mention and I was too scared to ask lol) missed an assignment. If the player does what he's supposed to, might be a different outcome.
-Mentioned Chase Smith and Bissainthe at LB. That's exciting. I know we'd all like to see them get some PT and hopefully live up to their talents.
-He said the UCLA LB will help.
-Fall camp starts August 2. We will get 29 practices.
-The timeline for the new football facility is 19-20 months IIRC. That's insane, given Miami construction standards.
-Coaches only allowed 1 hour/week with the team. That's another topic but kind of silly. One hour?!
-We spoke a lot about the portal and NIL.
-Reading between the lines, I think he's a little down on the effect it's had on recruiting. Whereas, for example, in the past coaches had to work to sell a kid to their staff, program, college environment, etc., now it's just where can a kid get more $. It's my word, but I think he believes recruiting has lost some charm.
-He was ok with the kids getting paid, but thinks the system we have now-which is a free-for-all-is too much and that some regulations need to be put in place.
-He believes that some type of salary cap may be necessary. I mentioned that then some school will say "here's $20K on top," but he believes guidelines need to be in place, even if maybe just to improve the perception about this new NIL world.
-He said Florida's NIL legislation puts us at a disadvantage with other states. I won't mention the states but basically in other states, folks can induce a player to come to a school. Florida does not permit that. It's kind of surprising that there isn't one set of rules for all NCAA teams to abide by.

What a cool dude this coach was. Incredibly engaging and was as interested to ask me questions about me and my family than I was to discuss Cane football. I can see how some of these guys are amazing recruiters. Just a gifted and genuine conversationalist. He must have read "How to win friends and influence people" cover to cover 18 times.

On that note, I ain't foolish or naive enough to think I can change anyone here, but everyone should try to be more respectful of our staff and players. This doesn't mean folks are immune from criticism, but criticism can be measured and stated appropriately. I know a lot of stuff here is in jest and attempts at humor, but there are some good dudes on staff and on the team. (As an aside, I had a chance to meet Zach McCloud several months ago and have nothing but great things to say about him too.) They're not commodities for our mere entertainment. I bet if we all had a chance to meet the coaches and players we'd generally be far more respectful than we are on this board. Be nice. Be respectful. There's a right and wrong way to say everything.
Thread of the year nominee..

What a great post

I mean you also have to remember we're talking about how people behave on message boards and on social media platforms—hiding behind screens and not engaging with "real" people.

"Fan" is also short for "fanatic" and fanaticism is "a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal or an obsessive enthusiasm." In short, sports fans are off-hinged nuts. Of course they're going to obsess on and online-trash some assistant coach who doesn't land some 5-Star recruit that Miami wasn't really in the running for, as another school as dropping bags. That's just the way it goes.

The only way this changes is to win big and win consistently ... but even then, it doesn't stop—because, you know, fanaticism. Look at the insanity that is Alabama and Clemson fans over the past several years. Even when winning it all, people still *****.

Couch definitely missed an assignment on 4th and 14
When Coach Hayes did his after game breakdown of the FSU loss he was livid at Couch. He kept showing how Couch was just out of position and sometimes its not about coaching, the player has to also do his part.

That said, Couch has gotten beaten up enough around here. I am willing to give him a clean slate. He looked pretty good at the Spring game. (that said, we dont know if our WRs are just that average or if the CB room is that much improved)

I think they played really well.

I think you're reading a little too much into that.

To add some context, this was following my question as to how he expected we'd look this season. I think what he meant was that we were just 2-3 plays away from maybe being 10-2. Now, like I said, I can play that game with some of our wins too, but the bigger point is that I don't believe this coach believes we are too far away from being a top 10, top 15 team.
Correct we were 4 plays away from being 3-9 last year let that sink in

This is my concern. If CFB is going to become a business--more so than it was--IMO, it will turn into a sport of haves and have nots. That means that the schools that can financially will themselves into contention year-in-year-out will do so and create a virtual monopoly over the rest that can't. As it is right now, you got Bama, UGA, OSU in tier one (and probably Clemson) and then a second tier that likely can't jump into that group unless it makes an equal financial commitment.

I think we are going to see less unpredictability (less Cincinattis as an example). IMO, there will be more predictability because you can likely directly tie financial support to wins and losses.
Eventually you will have a college whose NIL "salaries" will be equivalent, if not greater than NFL teams. With no salary cap coupled with the egos of boosters, someone (Texas or Texas A&M) will hit that threshold in a decade or two.

Next step afterwards - and the final step - will be to eliminate scholarship and roster restrictions. The former will be less meaningful in an NIL world, but the latter sets a hard cap on how many "walk ons" a team may have. Do away with that, and you can return to the days of a Nebraska signing 300 people for a class.

At the end of the day Couch was doing gods work, just like Borregalles when he missed the kick vs UVA, got us the end result we wanted and needed.

I don't want to get political here but while Florida and its current leaders deserve credit for getting out in front of NIL the end result (much like what happened with our beyond brief foray into actual freedom with legalized sports gambling) has left much to be currently desired.

If you're going to do press conferences on campus to pat yourself on the back over the NIL legislation then at least fix it immediately when your legislation isn't on par with the freedom it provides other schools in other states that followed your lead.

My guess is it is a carryover from the last staff especially talking about a player missing an assignment on the pivotal play in the FSU game. Not to worry, it's water over the bridge at this point. We have real pros leading this team now.
A defensive coach that carried over from the last staff.

I hate this stupid narrative.

Losing to FSU is not God‘s work.

That’s a cuck narrative.

Are some of you still under the impression that Manny would’ve been retained? How many times do you have to be told what was going on, before you actually believe it.

And Paul Bryant. He'd sign cats who would never play for him just to keep them from other schools. I've disliked 'Bama for that long.

I know. Me too. I took the silence from him on the offensive side of the ball to be a tacit suggestion that the offense wasn't as much a concern heading into this season as compared to the defense, which is probably a fair statement since TVD is leading the offense.
I hope your interpretation is spot on. The offensive side of the ball is my greatest concern at this point, especially after the spring game. Given the change in size on the line and adding more competency/talent on the defensive side, I feel like an improvement is upon us for our D. I also expect better coaching overall and despite not having the best of game day coaching reputations, I would wager that Mario makes better decisions than Manuelito in game. Let’s hope that we go 10 wins during the regular season which will also allow us to get the recruits that want to see the change in progress.

That player is a saint and should be bronzed in a glorious statue.

While I totally get what you are saying, my reference to this was to the poster who said we were a few plays away from 10-2. If we went 10-2, I have a hard time believing that Manny was getting let go.
