Throwing out a name at CB…

AOC performed admirably on the biggest stage and when the lights were brightest last season. No reason not to expect that he will step it up while Lucas and OJ remain out of the picture. I'm torn on this because while I'm with D$ in wanting the best combination on the field, there is also value in allowing players to become comfortable in their roles at the position for which they have trained all offseason.

If kids like Ryan Mack, Chris Ewald, Camdin Portis aren't allowed to play in the absence of 3 of our top 5 CBs then they may wish to leave when the season ends. I think I'm leaning toward keeping the status quo and flexing/building our depth at CB while these dudes are injured.

Big opportunity for Mack. Lotta people liked him.

And I think EOC will shine. Took way too much **** last year while filling in admirably and drawing brutal assignments in the playoffs. Legit top 10 WRs.

Thank God Clemson's QBs blow.
Anymore injuries to that room and the Pitt game becomes more interesting and could wind up like the Louisville game a few years ago
 
Bryce at CB would probably be an upgrade as athletic as he is and that’s not a knock on OJ or Lucas.

Ethan / Damari - CB1
Bryce / Mack or Ewald- CB2
Thornton / Portis or Dunnigan - Nickel
Poyser / Bryce - FS
Dunnigan / Day - SS
 
I love Fitz. I just don't see him being as athletic as Dunnigan. That kid has the goodz. But I know D$ has seen them far more than I have so I trust his judgement.

Poyser freezes as he's slow to ID the clear run plays and then after being late to cut off a 2-way go he somehow winds up behind every RB before chasing or hitting the square button like it's Bill Walsh CFB

Obviously we want them to develop, but I think Dmoney's point is that Fitz could end up playing some CB in our real games. Maybe even against ND and in the playoffs if injuries are still a concern. If thats the case then play him over those guys without hesitation.

There was a lot of offseason emphasis on increasing our takeaways from last season and it seems like we’re putting our best playmaker everywhere except the position that caused him to have 37.5% of the team’s interceptions last season.

I disagree. I am a believer of getting your best players on the field. I think that in big games, and big moments, even if guys are slightly out of position, playmakers make plays. Get them on the field.

If he is in ZP's role where would ZP play? If our best D backs on the team right now are Thornton, JJ, ZP, and Fitz, lets try to find a way to get them all on the field together. Thats why Heatherman preaches positionless football.

FS - ZP
N - Thornton
SS - JJ
CB Fitz
CB X (is he injured?)

This D back unit as a whole is nasty. Maybe he won't be as good as others 1 on 1 at corner, but we can adjust schematically. Have fun trying to get past our back end with all these guys in at once.
 
I forgot to mention him in the post above, but if theres ever a time for Ethan O'Connor to step up, its now. That kid could be really really good. I think him, OJ, and Antoine are our best cover corners on the team.
 
We missed the opportunity to move Trader to CB before he left for NCST to get 2 catches a week. HA

Fitzgerald, Poyser, Thornton and Dunnigan are four of our best players and I’d like them on the field as much as possible. This option makes some sense with corner injuries.

We won’t know until seeing it in games, but this is a good point in the schedule to experiment.
