Thoughts on USF game after rewatch

After this game, I am seeing them setting things up intentionally. They added more plays to other WR's. They added a few more formations, sets this game. I haven't rewatched the game, but I am thinking we ran the B gap a little more. Adding Beck's designed runs. Intentionally giving Billy more to defend and setting up some twists on these plays. Do we finally add TE passing this week to give FSU more to look at? I now like what we are doing this.
With TEs it feels like we are stuck. I have seen some plays where we try to get them involved but we are in a tough spot

The starters aren’t good enough to be receiving threats and the backups aren’t physical enough to block against 1s but I hope we take our chances with Gilbert/Schott

Great write-up, and while I definitely share the rat poison concerns, I think the opponent, and the circumstance helps out a lot.

Meaning, even though they're 1-2, I feel a lot better playing the gator this week than I would a good ACC opponent, like Louisville or even NC State. I feel like, no matter what, the gator has everyone's full attention. You saw the actions from Mario after the win in Hogtown last year....yeah, a lot of it was releasing frustration after 5-7 and 7-5, but this game means a lot to him. It's personal. I'll be pretty surprised if the team isn't very locked it. And also, Gameday is in town. And while we're going to get a lot more media attention than usual, which can lead to the rat poison you talk about, having the full ESPN production in town just makes games feel bigger. I'd say we played pretty well and pretty hard the last time ESPN came calling.

One game at a time, but we need these next 2 so badly. I can't remember a season ever where we played the gator and FSU in back to back games. Yes, we do have a bye week, but these are 2 gigantic games for us, back to back, and we've already beaten 2 ranked teams. Go take care of business this week, and get rested up for what will likely be one of the biggest Miami vs FSU games in history, in terms of ranking of both teams at kickoff.
I’m not worried about intensity the next two weeks. But if we handle UF & FSU, we could be knocking on the door of a #1 ranking. What worries me is a week off and then a Friday night game vs Louisville. That’s the game I’m circling the back half of the season. If we win that, I don’t think we lose in the regular season.

So sounds like there are no more excuses? Looking forward to seeing this team get to at least the semi's!

We've been a flash team for 20 years. A statement win over Virginia Tech in 2005 followed by a punking in the Peach Bowl. Fast starts in 2009, 2013 and 2017 that ended with thuds. Explosive offenses in 2020 and 2023 paired with helpless defenses. We didn't know what we were getting game to game.

This team is different because we're good enough to win the same way every week. It's the same boring formula we saw during the Saban dynasties. Clean pockets. Power running. Good decisions in the passing game. Knockback on the defensive line. Physicality at every position, from receivers blocking on the perimeter to corners getting off blocks and tackling. This team doesn't have depth like a Saban team, but it plays a similar way.

Now we're in the rat poison stage. Everybody is telling us we look good because we do look good. All top teams have to deal with fawning press and motivated opponents. But it's new to us. This week's hype fest will be a huge test for Coach Cristobal and the team's leadership.

With that said, the team has stayed locked in through three games. They aren't just physical in spurts. It's all game, even with the backups. It's hard to overstate how bad the beating looked in person. Every time you looked away from the ball, Anez Cooper or Mark Fletcher was driving somebody into the dirt. USF won't be right for another month. And the lightning delay did not throw our team off at all. These are all good signs going forward.

Some position-by-position thoughts on the USF win below:

QB

Carson Beck
loves to remind people he can run, and he tried to prove it on Saturday. It's probably not a good idea to lower your shoulder in the 4th quarter of a blowout. But there's no question about Beck's toughness. In the passing game, he has all the answers to the test. If we continue to protect him, it will be target practice until the playoffs. Emory Williams really worked on his athleticism this offseason and looked faster on his first-down run.

RB

Mark Fletcher
remains one of the most underappreciated Canes on the team. He dominates short-yardage, breaks off chunk runs, knocks guys back in pass protection, and has championship intangibles. He will need to continue to protect the ball, but he's the heartbeat of this offense. I'd like to see more Girard Pringle, Jr. going forward. There was penetration on his touchdown run, and he was able to weave his through before bursting into the end zone. His profile is very similar to Louisville RB and Miami native Isaac Brown as an undersized but tough North/South burner.

WR

We could see a lot of Josh Moore going forward. He had a ton of splash plays in camp, including a dominant scrimmage that really opened up Beck's eyes. Moore wasn't as consistent as Malachi Toney, but the highs were stratospheric. Now that's had his breakout game, his confidence should surge. I love what we're getting from Keelan Marion and Tony Johnson. Some of Beck's throws to Marion were not perfectly placed, but he was able to adjust like a true receiver. Johnson showed some speed and continues to be a "glue guy" behind the scenes.

Toney looks extremely comfortable at punt returner. He probably houses that long return if he doesn't get tripped up cutting across the field.

TE

Same story as last week. This group needs to get better. I don't think it's a "Dawson's offense" issue as much as the players themselves. Elija Lofton still doesn't look right and Alex Bauman hasn't gotten going. The young guys are knocking on the door.

The crazy thing is that if you asked anybody inside our building about our best skill guys during spring, they would've said some combination of Lofton, JoJo Trader and Jordan Lyle. We've been able to score touchdowns without those guys contributing.

OL

Nothing new. This is the best group in the country. I'd take more of a wait-and-see attitude with other positions, but this room has been consistently great for three years now. Shout out to SJ Alofaituli for making an impact as a fullback (he wore #46). He's not snapping well enough yet at center and he's small at guard, but he's twitchy and talented enough to help us now while developing into our center of the future. He also had great blocks on both Pringle TDs this year.

Front seven

I'm putting these guys all together because they played as one. We didn't get gashed once despite USF's pace. As @Cribby mentioned in his great recap, we had outstanding communication at all levels of the defense. If you wanted to boil this game into a simple stat, we ran for 205 yards (5.4 YPC) and USF ran for 40 yards (1.5 YPC).

Shout out to two legacies for making plays: Chase Smith and Booker Pickett. Smith looked as fast as he has since his injury in '22, and Pickett consistently gets pressure in his garbage time reps.

Defensive backs

Same story here- clean communication and no real coverage busts. USF's big plays came on spectacular plays by the quarterback. Jakobe Thomas is not only a tone-setter as a hitter, he's a fundamentally sound and disciplined tackler in the open field. I also wanted to highlight CB Ethan O'Connor. The Washington State transfer is quietly playing a lot of snaps. He helped blow up a trick play and is playing with a ton of energy. I loved seeing him pump up walk-on Nick Kelly during a kickoff.

Bottom line, we're in a similar spot to 2023 and 2024. Big out-of-conference win, 3-0 record and budding hype. Our team is better, but we need to prove it by being the same team every week. This entire week (Monday through Saturday) will be a huge test.
@DMoney regarding the comments about the TE, at what point does this become a “Dawson’s offense”? Even last year, if you go by how the NFL viewed the talent of our pass catchers, Arroyo was our most talented pass catcher but was only 5th in receptions including behind Sam Brown.

I think we were spoiled last year with Arroyo. He was Ward's number two reciving option, so obviously we saw a lot more production there. Beck seems to have found his guy's with Toney, Daniels, Moore, Marion and even Johnson. I don't think it's really an issue of not having talent there, it's more that Beck is in a rhythm with his WRs. This team has a lot of weapons, and Beck likes to spread it around, so naturally some guys aren’t going to put up big numbers every week.

we beat the dogsh*t outta USF and it could have been way worse. credit to the team for not folding after the delay

we absolutely cannot come into this UF game with the they suck they are 1-2 easy win for us mindset. They have a good defense and Lagway is talented enough to randomly look like he is actually the best QB in the country

also, we need to give more praise to #6 Brown. Not flashy or anything but he does the little s*** well and plays with crazy effort. Blitz pickup is always great. He’s the first one running to try and pick up extra blocks. On one of Beck’s interceptions he actually came across the field to hawk down the DB. Doubt they would’ve taken it back for a touchdown but little stuff like that is what sticks out

2 things:

1. I believe it's spelled FyZiCaL
2. So you're saying we need to shoot our Schott?

two points.

1. Beck has played in games this big and a lot bigger and he will make sure at least his side of the ball is focused. Bain will handle the other side.

2. I started a thread on our extra point difficulties. Yes, we are having major issues in that operation. We need to get this cleaned up because it can cause us a game down the road.

your thoughts would be appreciated.

Go Canes
Our long snapper is kinda ***. Every extra point attempt was grounded.

Damari Brown has impressed me the most out of all the corners. They all had balled out receivers have to work to get anything against this secondary night and day from year. Go canes!!!!

I'm not "worried" but let's just focus on the gator. That take em one game at a time has been around for a long time for a good reason.

They build you up to tear you down.

Next challenge is to see how we handle the “fawning” phase. Gotta have a tough foundation to see it through to the other side.

Speed, strength, athleticism all matters on the field. We check those boxes. Now the entire program has to be in lockstep and stay focused. Coaches set the tone, leaders make sure team carries out the mission.

Let’s stay focused and see how good we can be.

Schott had zero reps I believe.... that can't happen with that young talent... ESPECIALLY if the older guys aren't impressing.... zero reps is coaching mismanagement IMO....
Or it is coaching because Schott did not have as good a week in practice as Gilbert who played and had a nice catch and run.
Playing time must be earned, not given. And Mario is creating a culture that young guys have to practice well in order to play game reps. The game is the reward for practice. What Schott did against BC in mop up time is meaningless as to whether he should play against USF, and UF. This is actual COACHING, and roster depth gives coaches the luxury to do this.

But to just assume that coaches made a mistake by not playing someone who deserved to play reads like someone who has a narrative and needs an excuse to present the narrative.

Now if you have some info that Schott had a great week of practice and the coach still didn’t play him, then tell us. Otherwise, your speculation is unwarranted.

I just think more towards the “rat poison” being talked about focus the next two weeks shouldn’t be an issue. If you can’t get ready for these regardless of record, you’re playing at the wrong school.

No more designed QB runs please.
You have to have some designed runs or options for the QB to keep the ball when the d-end crashes down. In fact in the ND game there were 2-3 times that had Beck kept the ball we would have had a lot more success than handing it off.
And it keeps d-ends honest which means one less defender when we do hand it off.

It doesn’t need to be 10 times per game, but 1-3 is absolutely warranted.
