Thoughts on the Notre Dame game

Thank you, solid write up

Can't wait for Blount, Scott, Lightfoot to ge even more time now and very happy for Samson

Just curious, where is someone like Ny Carr now? We still need that take the top off of a D WR
A kid like Ny Carr better start to show up and compete otherwise, I see a kid like that hit the portal in hope of a fresh start. Thats why you continue to recruit and never stop.

This assumes that Mario went over and said "run everything up the middle and punt", of which there is no evidence. We have to stop putting everything that goes wrong on Mario getting involved.
It’s easy to conclude that. Finally Miami is a Football program again. Look at the size of this team and look at the sidelines. If it wasn’t for Mario. I can’t imagine what this team would have looked like… little by little he’s put us back on the map and we look the part and finally have the talent to show for it. Onto the next game.

Mario has improved his portal takes every year, just like his HS class takes. Not only finding impact players (Beck, Daniels, Toure), but also high-value-vs-cost players (Marion, Brown). @Dwinstitles was starting to worry NIL money would end up reducing the effect of Mario's elite recruiting. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

He's also kept the best players from transferring. We had a ton of guys transfer out. Did we miss any one of them? My biggest concerns were the two Hortons and Riley Williams. Josh is 3rd string on UGA, don't think he played v Marshall. The other two are marginal players for their team. Every single guy who transferred was replaced by someone better. Meanwhile we kept everyone we wanted, even our backup DTs and DEs.

Roster is talented and deep. Need more Day 1/2 guys. But we're getting there finally.
Terrific analysis man. Hadn't really thought about the guys that left and how we replaced them in that way. Mario is a true CEO. He has raised the floor and ceiling of this program to ridiculously high spots. The only question left is can he reach the ceiling.

This. We played Russian roulette and pulled the trigger five times and lived . What’s amazing to me is analytics are such a big part of football now how did one think our best odds was taking the ball out of our 3 million Dollar qb’s hands with Toney going off to put it on the leg of a career kick off specialist that’s 4-11? But hey the result worked out. Maybe the football gods knew we were the better team that day and deserved the win and forgave Mario for his decision making.
I hear you but the analytics aren’t at practice watching and observing. Mario didn’t make his decision in a vacuum - it’s based on his observations of the players throughout spring and fall camps. He’s got a little more information than you and I, or the metrics even.

Beck may be a high dollar heismen candidate, but he really didn’t do anything spectacular on Sunday. I actually thought a lot of throws weren’t as accurate as they could have been, and the td to Daniel’s is an interception 9 times out of ten. Obviously based on the game plan and the calls, it was clear the coaches were trying to protect him from a very good secondary, so it goes to show they perhaps they aren’t ready to let him rip yet. He missed all of spring and is still catching up apparently.

All that to say, I don’t think it’s an automatic ‘put it in the hands of the qb’ situation when Mario knows he’s got a kicker with the ability to hit at that distance.

This is poetic & the absolute truth 😆

It wasn’t just the offensive play calling that was too conservative; the defense was giving was too much cushion the entire 4th quarter. Mario got up a few scores and tried to take the air out of the ball. It’s who he is. We survived in spite of him with the whole country watching. Great win.

Mesidor looks like a different player. Bain deserves his flowers (the amount of ground he covers on run plays is insane), but mesidor had just as big an impact as a pass rusher. Can’t believe how much more explosive he looks year over year.

Bell played well. I’ve been critical. Props to him. He did get beat twice, and coincidentally beck threw TDs both times. Watch beck feel the pressure and climb/slide both times. ****.

Cooper moves people. The center is good. The OL as a unit is championship caliber.

Kevin Beard has lots of apologists here. How do we recruit blue chips every year and somehow start transfers every year? 2 transfers and a true freshman started. This guys needs to go.

Speaking of WRs, trader had no separation on either ball thrown to him. Yes, ND has good DBs. But still..:

Toney cooked everyone. We got a good one there.

Props to ray ray and trader for blocking. They get hats on people.

If this game was any indication, Thomas was the better portal pickup at safety than poyser. I’ll reserve judgment, but 8 looks better than 7 to me.

Can anyone explain the unnecessary roughness call near the goal line on day? Cause his helmet came off? Refs kept ND in this game just as much as the conservative play calling did.

Overall, I agree with D$ in that I watched every game all weekend and this team can compete. Beck is the blueprint of what we’ve been asking for here for 25 years: quick processor, accurate, gets the ball to the playmakers. This is behind a championship quality OL. This team will only get better with more reps.

I’m excited.
Once your helmet comes off you can't keep trying to make a play. Basically you need to stop playing so when Day kept trying to get in on the tackle its a penalty. Safety issue they'll tell you

Did he keep trying to make a play? Seemed like he gave up to me

They called a personal foul though. He sorta piled on when the guy was down. Participating after losing your helmet is Illegal participation is an unsportsmanlike penalty.

Great write up. Only thing that can hold us back in my opinion is Mario’s in game coaching.

He gets all the credit for building what he’s built which is a championship level team. But now he needs to be a championship level in game coach. This game shouldn’t have been as close as it was. We were the superior team, at almost all positions. Refs didn’t help but the game had a feel of a 28-14 type finish not a nail bitter like it was
Sounds like the butch days. Right

Agree with almost everything here.. Especially it being BOTH sides of ball going prevent. Like 70% of ND yards came in 4th qtr. We went ultra conservative, playing off, there was one catch on comeback where we didnt have a defender near wr like 10 yards, on a 10 yard hitch. We just let them walk down field with ease. Both sides of ball checked out in 4th and mailed it in. Offense run up middle, defense prevent.

I think on Day play, his helmet came off but tried to hop in pile? I think you are supposed to stop playing if your helmet is off for safety reasons.. Not sure tho, just assuming.

as someone who thought we got a tad too conservative, you can't argue this point. An incomplete pass is about 40 seconds or so. Which can be about 3-5 plays.

Or none if you're Coach Prime and Colorado
Gets a little dicier given that the FG was almost 50 yards

A shorter FG and ok hold them and go to OT

Miss that FG and Notre Dame has pretty dang good field position to start

But anyway…it worked out which is the part that makes this discussion interesting

That Heisman-contending quarterback barely completed any passes down the field and was an insane CJ Daniels catch away from throwing for less than 200 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

When we gripe about conservative playcalling, we always pretend like the alternative was a wide-open 10-yard out route, when in reality, our receivers had trouble getting separation all game and Notre Dame's cornerbacks were better than our receivers.

I thought we were too conservative in some instances (after the interception is a good example) but we only moved the ball on the last possession because Notre Dame sat back in zone instead of challenging our receivers. So no part of me is confident that more passes would have been a better solution.

yeah, I don't disagree, overall I didn't really like the last several drives we had. But with that being said, I do think down the line as our WR's get more seasoning with Beck, the play-calling will change (I hope)

the major issue for this team's ceiling is that your offense can only be so good if your best WR is a true freshman slot receiver, regardless of how good that player is. Toney looks like someone who will finish top 5 in career catches at UM, but a 5' 10" 17 year old can only shoulder so much of the load. there was little to no evidence from Sunday that any other WR on the team can consistently get open on 3rd and long -- against most teams that shouldn't matter but if we're talking about the playoffs that is the number one thing that needs to be figured out moving forward.

however it's been almost 25 years since we have looked this physically dominant on both lines of scrimmage. the 2017 team had some really good players on the DL but they all topped out at as fringe NFL players and got pushed around by Clemson in the ACC title game. Mario is worth every penny for that fact alone.
I feel what you’re saying but Daniels and Marion showed proof they can win 1 on 1 battles with their route running Sunday. Marion actually surprised me with his hands. Jojo will prove himself coming off the nagging injury from camp but most of all I think our issues will be route concepts Dawson schemes up with this group. Remember our WR room was always in question. They did better than expected. I only remember one drop and that came with two guys running routes in the same area. Don’t give up on the room yet. We have some talent. But Mali is the real deal.
