Things Are Different, But…

Let’s look at recent history of some of the most accomplished coaches (Saban, Smart, Dabo, Meyer)

Saban took over a Bama program that went 26-23 under Shula for 4 yrs. He also inherited the #21, 16, & 13th ranked recruiting classes. Results his 1st yr? 7-6

Smart took over a UGA program that went 39-13 under Richt for the last 4 yrs. He also inherited the #13, 8, & 6th ranked recruiting classes. Results his 1st yr? 8-5

Dabo “fully” took over a Clemson program that went 32-19 under Bowden. He also inherited the #14, 16, & 9th ranked recruiting classes. Results his 1st yr? 9-5

Urban Meyer (Mayahs) took over a UF program that went 33-17 under Spurrier, Zook, & Strong (interim). He also inherited the #10, 1, & 5th ranked recruiting classes. Results his 1st yr? 9-3

Now, Urban’s second go round in coaching at OSU was different. The Vest built OSU into a juggernaut, winning the B1G 6 straight yrs before his dismissal. They hadn’t lost more than 3 games since 2004. Typically when a coach does well his 1st yr, it’s b/c he’s already taking over an established machine (see Larry Coker, Ryan Day, Dennis Erickson, Jimbo Fisher (FSU) etc. as examples).

So what is Mario inheriting? He’s inheriting a program that went 28-21 under Richt/Diaz over the past 4 yrs, while inheriting the #27, 17, & 11th ranked recruiting classes.

So again, it’s not about lowering expectations vs. being realistic. Now the caveat is, we may win 8 games & win The Coastal b/c of how bad & helter skelter this division is. The point is, don’t be too disappointed or turncoat if we don’t make The ACCCG &/or win 10 games in yr 1, b/c even the greats haven’t done so taking on a rebuild.
The only thing I can see that might have a more positive impact in our favor is the rise of the portal since the coaches listed. If we can shore up some holes on defense, 8 wins is the absolute floor, 10 is a great outcome, and 9 is most likely.

If we had a "serviceable QB" then 7 to 9 wins is a fair expectation for a new coach.

QB means EVERYTHING. A great one can mask deficiencies throughout the entire team.

Seen it done time and time again throughout CFB seasons.

I fully expect 9 to 10 wins with this staff and TVD at the helm.

Fans will be fans. Lets put it this way, it will be at least 2.5 years until talk of the banner plane will come up.

I really really really hate to bring this up, as I have seen it brought up in 'defense" of Golden and Manny. Saban lost to Louisiana Monroe ?? at home early in his time at Bama. Just whatever , it happened. Make your own conclusions. Everyone loses.

I will be extremely patient, and as many pragmatic fans are I just want to see improvement, and a commitment to excellence.

I wanted some things to come to fruition before making this post. Clearly, under Mario’s leadership things are different. For a while I’ve complained about the S&C program, & now u’re hearing from our kids’ very own mouths, while trying to be respectful of the old program, admitting both the workouts & nutrition have been more geared towards what they do vs. saying to themselves ‘I can “see’” how this can relate to football.’

We’ve complained about recruiting; being lazy towards certain caliber of players, not having enough eyes out there like a Bama, Clemson, or UGA. Now, we’re seeing the exact opposite, not afraid to aggressively go after top tier talent DESPITE location.

We’ve complained about practices being, too, lax, where coaching wasn’t necessarily done. Brownie points & seniority taking precedence before the first whistle. Now we see guys getting coached up on minor details. Players praising the practices being harder, while seeing our HC, OC, & S&C coaches being right there in the middle, not allowing guys to get away w/ not executing their standards.

Honestly, there’s a lot to be excited for; couple that w/ the fam getting back together & allowed to come through w/ appropriate notice. Media coverage has been WAAAAY better than before. (Shout out to Canesville). Having a great, GREAT AD who comes from a top notch football factory. Having guys on staff w/ NFL credentials, &/or So Fla street cred. Seeing players work their tails out, looking like football players v. high school guys playing at the collegiate level. This has been the most excited I’ve been about the direction of our program since the downfall.

HOWEVER, I wanna swagger jack a partial post from @canesdogo:

“I am convinced that many cane fans will start, bleeting, cussin' and belching, negative crap, when we lose a close game, or a called play does not work out during a crucial game….The big question is........... will our fans give the Canes, Coaches and team a chance to grow and become great, or will impatience win out?.”

This, too, is my concern. We’ve been patiently waiting for 15+ yrs. Let’s be honest, there were & are some serious Mario haters on here, & human nature is sometimes ppl care about being right than being wrong. It’s the sensationalism of saying “Aha, I told u so” vs. seeing what’s best for their program. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan of the last 3 hires, however I put on the best pair of O&G glasses for a brief moment to give them a chance. This time, it feels different. It didn’t “feel” different under the previous hires, but like true fans, many convinced ourselves it would b/c we care. Mario 2021 vs Mario 2016 is two different coaches, but make no mistake about it, we r a rebuild & remodel. Some houses just need a coat of paint, while others need the dry rot completely removed & parts renovated. Our house is the latter. So I don’t want the fans who want “Lane Train” to assume in yr 1, if we don’t knock it out the park, we inherited FIU Mario.

Garcia already said it’s been a process learning a new O & D. Pls understand, while we boast some nice, young parts that will be great, we still have holes & ?marks across. That’s not a Mario fault, that’s a previous regime fault. I seen posters say ACCCG or bust, 10+ wins or it’s a failure. U r setting urself up for failure. History shows even the greatest coaches needed 2-3 yrs to right a ship off back on course. So my plead to my fellow Canes fans is to give it just a little time. Our culture has been tarnished, & like any fine jewelry that’s been tarnished, it takes a little time to buff it back to its luster.

It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane, & as Mario said, nothing is done yet. Enjoy what we got cooking, just don’t stick ur head in the pot, too, soon.
So what you’re saying is 15-0??? I read ya!

The hype isn't just because we hired Mario but is that the U has decided we needed to invest more via the Herbie rant. Herbie got the ball rolling and I doubt Mario would be here except for the investments being made to hire better coaches, improve facilities. It takes financial backing to accomplish it. I am thrilled we have an experienced coach and that he himself along with his hires are all top notch recruiters and solid teachers. I thought Richt would do well except he refused to change QB coach then Manny had a bad hire at OC that surprised everyone since at the time it seemed to be a great hire, Manny quickly got that solved. Manny was handicapped when it came to the finances versus what the U has now. I thank Herbie for exposing our lack of dedication and for alum stepping up. We are in great shape to start winning titles and these changes have expedited the timeframe. That is a good thing and with our talent I expect 2022 to have a competitive system. We have the coaches, we have the backing, we have more fans back and the best QB.
Manny was “handicapped” by his Rolodex and never outgrowing his Lisps....

That's why for me just beat the teams we're supposed to beat while establishing culture and great fundamentals. Beat the 💩 out of ACC foes minus Clemson with top 10 recruiting and that's a success. We just can't expect the world and accept some minor bumps in the road.
Yes I agree. We should win 10 games regular season. Lose in the ACC championship. Then lose to our ooc bowl opponent unless we get some scrub from the pac-12 or big12 or G5 team

Coastal, my man. Coastal. We have enough talent to win it. Other than Clemson we should be able to beat the rest of our ACC schedule. Our toughest tests will be at home against UNC and Pitt w/o their top qbs.

We just never truly had the coaching except, perhaps, 2017. We have always had the talent. If we win the coastal, the rest is gravy. I doubt 8 wins does it though.

I agree, but in 2016 we had the coaching & players, too. Richt took over a program that went 30-21, and he inherited the #14, 15, & 27th ranked recruiting classes. 1st yr results? 9-4. I’m just saying, it’s much more than just coaching my friend. The Coastal has been up for grabs since 2004, & despite having the most talent on paper every single yr, we’ve won that bih once. We’ve had a completely f’d up infrastructure, & it generally takes 2 yrs w/ strong coaching to right the YEARS of wrong that’s plagued programs.

U can use Bama, SC w/ Carroll, UGA, or Clemson as examples of schools going through long droughts before becoming relevant again, which is y the aforementioned coaches struggled to change the culture yr 1, before making great leaps in yr 2, & no later than yr 3. ****, we can even throw in Dave Aranda in there. Rhule had one good season in 3 yrs, but Baylor was an absolute mess after that scandal. Aranda struggled yr 1, & became a monster yr 2.

It takes time, so setting up urself to be disappointed is not a good look. Again, “if” we win The Coastal &/or 10 games yr 1, crown Cristobal. If we don’t, don’t look at this season as a failure vs a stepping stone to something greater. U can feel how u want, but history says ur feelings might be crushed.

SSCC you are good.......tell Relly to get me a good pair of sneaks, a monster size foot long hotdog with a bottle of Heinz thick to go, and I could not be monitored.
I would be trekking just like our Canes but no **** mustard Chi style.
That just does not work....oh yeah throw in some Duke mayo while you are at it on those foot longs....and a cold brew.....heaven my friend...
Lol, my friend, you are a mess!

Facts; and I’m OK w/ that. What I’m not OK w/ is what we witnessed, doggy:

-Dancing allowed on the sidelines while we getting our brains beat in by a G5 school

-Awards provided for mediocre performances

-Trinkets given out while getting embarrassed on Nat’l TV

-A HC slipping & sliding after a game

-Allowing historic negative bench marks in all 3 seasons.

Man, turrible chit we endured just the past 3 seasons alone.
Facts, bruh. All facts. Throw in the LaTech and FIU *** kickins we suffered, too!

8-4.

Defensive side of the ball is a disaster as of today with starters.

I Only like LT, Rique and the safety’s.

Everybody else is wishful thinking and hoping that guys take the next step.

If we are going with HOPE they could squeeze 9 wins.

I think 8-4 is about right. Offense looks good and could potentially carry the defense if they are lights out.

We just had a season with the fewest interceptions in Miami history. The player with the most was James Williams with 2……..we had 5.5 sacks from Zach Mccloud as the sack leader.

I don’t think we have a double digit sack guy on the roster, LBs, CBs outside of Tyrique are average to below average guys.

The roster of today I can only see 8-4 unless the TVD offense wins games in shootout fashion.

Honestly, to have a BIG season(which to me is 10-plus wins and a Coastal Title) they will need a 2017-type of season as it relates to turnover margin, a few breaks, stuff of that nature

To me, what Im looking for is just how we win our games vs teams we should really beat, and if any of our losses are blowouts. Point differential is an overlooked stat in terms of determining how good a team really is

Sometimes its not even the wins, but how you play in losses-- example being 2020, where blowouts to Clemson and UNC were really sobering

At the end of the day we know there will be porsters in here complaining week 1 because something looked off or not elite. We have an ace recruiter who surrounded himself with like minded recruiters and proven coaches. Let them work and we are gonna be eating for decades to come.

this will be a test for all his diehards, to understand in the wake of short-term disappointments to comprehend the big picture. Butch was a victim of this in 97 as short-sighted fans were really on his case.

Sometimes, it's not if you lose but HOW you lose and compete

Personally, I'm just going to enjoy this next season, regardless

If you've been on this board for any period of time, you know that Mario's popularity will NEVER be higher than it is right now. It'll only go downhill from here.

till he wins his first national title at Miami...

and then his second....

then the third...

then....

No because the coaches don’t play if u haven’t noticed lol, their job is to put the players in position to be better not make the plays for them.

If you have a top 3 staff. That would mean, all things equal, you should be able to beat all but 2 teams on a regular basis. If these guys can't beat scrubs like a Picketless Pittsburgh, they are not top 3.

You think this **** is madden or something? Lol

On paper the staff is loaded but they haven’t even finished an off season yet lol, there’s not one player besides the oregon transfer that they’ve recruited and developed that will have a big role on the roster…

But I know you’re not looking for logical answers you’re hoping we lose to say i told u so or some weird ****…Like I said, you’re a great value version of skip bayless

We don't need their recruits to beat the likes of Pitt or UNC. That is what I am saying. We have enough talent that a competant coaching staff can win the Coastal. I am not rooting for losses. In fact I have said numerous times I think we win the Coastal, so if we lose 4 games I won't be able to say "I told you so". Your a great value version of Paul Finebaum except instead of slurping Saban you slurp Mario.
