The myth of Cristobal "The Recruiter"

Lol at stealing my thread title. But the guy can actually recruit but coaching on the other hand..

The National Recruiter of the Year is determined using the 247Sports Recruiter Rankings. That list is formulated using the 247Sports Composite ratings of the commits that each assistant coach had a primary or secondary role in landing. Cristobal just happened to land the mother lode.

In total, Cristobal had a hand in landing 10 commits out of the 2015 class at Alabama. That’s just under half of the 24 prospects that ultimately committed or signed with the Crimson Tide. Among those commits, Cristobal managed to touch New Jersey, south Florida, Washington, D.C., and even some more local homegrown talent.

The highest rated of the group was Calvin Ridley, a wide receiver out of Pompano Beach (Fla.) Monarch who has a chance to be another Amari Cooper-type of talent in Tuscaloosa. Ridley is ranked as the No. 1 wide receiver in the country according to 247Sports Composite and Cristobal was able to capitalize on his south Florida ties to reel in not only Ridley but also his teammate in four-star athlete Shawn Burgess-Becker.

The second five-star on Cristobal’s resume came from cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick out of Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peters Prep. The No. 5 cornerback in the country according to 247Sports Composite committed in April and Cristobal was able to hold off Florida State, Penn State, Ohio State and others to keep the 6-1, 198-pounder in the class.

Cristoabal’s experience as an assistant at Rutgers and Miami and the head coach at FIU helped him land Fitzpatrick, Ridley and Burgess-Becker but what he did closer to home in Tuscaloosa was maybe even more important.

After landing the top offensive tackle in the country in 2014 (Cameron Robinson), Alabama needed to secure a strong interior offensive line class. Cristobal was the primary recruiter on the No. 5 offensive guard in the country in Richie Petitbon and the No. 12 offensive guard in the country in Dallas Warmack. He also assisted in the recruitment of the No. 4 offensive guard in Lester Cotton, the No. 19 offensive guard in Brandon Kennedy and a really-high-upside offensive tackle in Matt Womack.

Finally, Cristobal was the primary recruiter on five-star defensive tackle Daron Payne out of Birmingham (Ala.) Shades Valley. Payne is a 6-2, 325-pound nose guard that was rated as the No. 7 defensive tackle in the country according to 247Sports Composite. That signing gave Cristobal three five-stars in the 2015 cycle.

How many 5*s has Mario signed BEFORE he got to Bama? Did Bama ever get any 5* before Mario then great got there?

Saban just makes sure he has someone who knows the faces of the locals in the recruiting area so the brown bags get to the right people.

those prospects came because of the brand and nick saban probably anybody in his role could have pulled those kids, that place practically recruits it self now its a machine there.

Why has nobody else at bama did it then? You said bama recruits itself but nobody else on the staff did what he did. He might not can't coach but he can recruit.

You cannot be serious. They are in the top 3 in recruiting every year. Even before Mario ever got there. He's not doing anything that wasn't being done before he got there. If he gets a job somewhere else will Bama not be in the top 3 recruiting the next year? Rotfl I'm dying here

Once again of course the program helps. Like i said coley has been good here but he was great at fsu because they won more. But why didn't other bama assistants do what he did? Nobody has answered this question yet.

Bama had top recruiting class for three straight years before Mario came. Had too recruiting the two years he's been there recruiting. Would have had the top classes without him. He has not locked SoFla down. He's not the recruiting guru people think he is. He's collecting signatures on behalf of Nick Saban. Take away the scarlet A and Saban's rings and you're left with a 27-47 failed head coach/career position coach.

Not talking about rankings. I'm talking about individual success as a recruiter. Everybody is saying he can't recruit it's bama recruiting itself. Well why didn't any of the other assistants do what cristobal did?

What did he do, though? Contribute to a #1 class for Bama?

I looked it up btw... in his 5 yrs at FIU he had 1(0), 5(3), 4(2), 7(7), 7(7), and 3(3) all conference players. That's # of players (# of his players). Ty Hilton was all conf. all 4 yrs and player of the year, so clearly a great pull.

His 4th year they won the sun belt with a 6-6 record, but finished 4th and tied for 5th the next 2 yrs before he was fired. I don't get the love for him as a recruiter or a coach. He had a couple good years and one great recruit at FIU.

Maybe he was better at Rutgers?

Answer the question people. Everybody knows what bama has done in recruiting but we are talking about individual success as a recruiter.

You have all the people who are involved in recruiting for a living say the guy is the real deal, you have guys who are with this site saying the samething.

Why did saban hire him? If he can't coach or recruit.

It's easy to sell kids to Bama when you are top 5 in the country every year. You can almost promise the kids a chance at the playoffs and the NFL, even if the guys coming from Bama are over rated going into the league.

Trying to sell kids to Miami right now is like selling ****.. you can't do it. You might get a few guys to stay home... like Golden but nobody is locking down Sfla winning 8-9 games. It just won't happen. The first step in the process of locking down Sfla is winning football games. He might get a few on momentum alone from the hiring in the first class.

We can't ***** up this hire. We are set to win in 2016 and even a non recruiter can gain an advantage after we win 10+ games next year, which is very possible with the guys we have returning. Just get me a good coach that wont ruin 2016 and then he will be fine recruiting.

I understand not wanting the guy as hc but ignoring everything to fit your agendas is crazy.

Territory....If Smart had Mario's territory last year he would probably have finished as the #1 recruiter.

If Mario is so good then why is he currently only ranked as the #51 recruiter this year?

I understand not wanting the guy as hc but ignoring everything to fit your agendas is crazy.

It's a double edged sword to claim his prowess as a recruiter at Alabama... the program literally did not need him to get #1 classes multiple times beforehand.

Seems better to look at what he did at Rutgers and FIU. He did find 4 guys (3 at FIU and 1 at Rutgers) that made it to the NFL, according to his Bama profile. And a ton of SoFL coaches think he's great, so he's got that goin for him as well.

I think he's a great addition to any staff as a position coach & recruiter. I just don't think he's magic. If he were at Georgia and going against Saban, how many of those same recruits would he have closed? I suspect not very many.

Yeah, I didn't know that til I looked it up. Said Anthony Gaitor as well. It is impressive to get 3 NFL caliber guys to come to FIU, I'll give him that.

$$$$ in brown bags is big difference at both places too. Somebody else sure recruited a lot of 5*s before Mario.

If we hire Mario and he fails after putting a 4 mil number out there, I'm done with UM athletics. I have better things to do than watch crappy football.

Cristobal = Coley. When they are recruiting for big time name schools and coaches, they are very effective. But those guys are a dime a dozen. It was a good fit b/c Saban needed an OL coach, and he came with the added bonus of being familiar with the most precious recruiting area on earth.

I remember when Coley was at FSU how he had almost a mystical quality attributed to him. LOL so much for that.

Yeah and they can hire some dude from Minnesota that is kicking Coley's *** now...
