The Face Of Our Defense Next Year

McCloud has been a NON factor for 3 yrs.. what would a 5th do?

Reasoning being because he position does not involved in being a striker once Coach Manny implemented that in it was eliminated.-Just to be fair! He is knowledgeable of the defense and could be a factor next year in starting role. It really could work for next year defense. I would try to put McCloud weak side (Can't run side to side- str8 liner) , Joyner MLB, Sam Strong side or mix and match the last two. Looks good on paper but at least it wouldn't be no drop off heading to the new year wondering what we have??? IJS.

Go Canes!

Lol if you think the linebackers in the 80s would even be able to play on this defense let along be elite in it I don’t know what to tell you.

Shaq and Pinckney would dominate if all they had to do is play 1 gap assignment and chase after the football every down.
Krazy is too good of a word for the Douchebaggery that spews outta your mouth...Only a certified Idiot would think Armstead...Barrow and Smith wouldnt dominate today....

Put Shaq...Pink and McCloud up against those Nebraska...FSU...and Penn St teams of the late 80s and early 90s and it would have been a Massacre....

That was just for one game, Shaq & Pinckney are 2nd & 3rd overall on the season in tackles for the team.

Brooks had a nice showing coming in with the 2nd team & made plays as soon as he got in the game.

He deserves more snaps as the season progresses, he showed natural instincts, good tackling & great speed.

Baker needs to get him as much experience as possible this season so he can hit the ground running next year as the starting Mike LB & will be the leader of the new LB corps.

We will have a lot of youth at Backer next year; need to get rid of the striker.

Steed, Huff, Brooks, Height, Austin-Cave, Mathis, Flagg, Jennings, Joyner, McCloud (if he stays)

We need to hit on a transfer or win the lottery and sign Flowe

It might not be your idea of elite, but first team all ACC, pre-season All Americans and two guys that are four year starters and will be drafted is elite by most standards. I’d agree we’ve had some of the best to ever play the game here/ I don’t know that’s it’s fair to use that as the standard for elite. I’ll call them elite and respect your opinion that they are not. There’s 132 D-1 teams and they are arguably, as a starting unit, in the top 10.
Probably has more to do with how good they were as freshmen but we haven’t really seen the big jumps a lot expected. And you’re right they are still extremely high quality and it’s been a good run for them

No....our starting LBers are NOT elite....Stop it....Good??..Absolutely....but to throw accolades like "Elite" around in ref to Elite LBing at UM is ludicrous...
who said elite at UM? elite at UM is Hall of Fame worthy. Shaq and Pinck are very good college football players, they are the best players on the defense. For seniors, these 2 are certainly 2 of the best in College Football. Its ok to respect Shaq and Pinck for what they have done in college. Their draft status or potential in the NFL is irrelevant to what they have done at UM, especially Shaq.

OP said Elite and their not....

You want to see Elite??...
Watch the 86-88 LB Unit
Watch the 89-92 LB Unit
Watch the 93-94 LB Unit
Watch the 99-2002 LB Unit
Then watch our current Unit, and with a straight face bunch them with the others.
And none of those group played against 4 and 5 wide spreads every week (an offensive system that puts a lot of stress on LBs).

Just sayin

Please.......They faced OLs that **** on todays....You think FSU didnt have a Good Offensive system??....Lol....UM LBers had to deal with Ward...Wienke...etc...back then...Only a Shmuck could possibly think Bermuda Triangle wouldnt be starting today....Shaq and his cohorts would be handing Gatorade to them.

Some dudes are early bloomers. Shaq came in college ready. He has certainly been a tremendous college linebacker. Pinck is a bad body human in terms of genetics but can play football. They both can play but their NFL prospects are minimal, which doesn't take away from how well they have played here, especially Shaq

Our LBs? Elite? Pffff they're not even close. They are slow. Wait until we get some of these start playing when they come in. I have a feeling we are going to recruit those fast and light LBs and build them into men.

People forget that these guys were Al Golden recruits. They fit best in the Big 10.

These guys unfortunately never really improved that much, and are playing pretty much the same as they were as when they were freshmen.

Our 3 SR LBs are not elite, sorry. They dont have elite speed or elite play recognition abilities. Flashes of brilliance but that's it. Brooks looked like a beast when he was in the game. I thought he was a DB to how quickly he got to the ball. I also remember fans saying they dont know if he good enough or quick enough. He is faster than Shaq and Pickney for sure. Maybe even McLoud.

Finding an elite linebacking corps here requires a trip down memory lane.

That's the problem.

Actually, and surprisingly, the penn disgrace moron regime didnt do bad at recruiting linebackers at all, and we almost had our 1st trio of possibly elite linebacker play here in a long time, but those morons kept kicking them off the team. Just think, we should've seen denzel perriman, eddie "bath salts" johnson and gionni paul play and grow together from that 2011 class, the next year, 2012, we end up with Raphael kirby, jawand blue and gabe terry. Than in 2013, we get jermaine "Amazing" grace, and alex figueroa, the disciplined Marine child so we were told. Out of the 8 linebackers they brought in listed above, them morons kicked at least 6 of them off the team.

Think Shaq has a long productive NFL career. He solid is most every area and the way NFL DCs optimize linebackers is pretty amazing. He might not be a perennial pro bowler but I think he has a very long career

I think we can agree they’ve had solid if unspectacular careers. They balled but never have been massive difference makers

The Epitome of ELITE LBing play was UM vs FSU 1991 & 1992
UM....Barrow...Armstead...Smith
FSU....Brooks...Carruthers...Jones (Shadetree)......Without question, the 6 Best CFB LBers on one field at one time.....Now watch those games, and sit there and honestly say, those 6 couldn't thrive today. All 6 would be starting on todays UM and FSU teams....
