The Bank (5/6)

like im tired of mentioning it but THE FIRST THING HIS DAD MENTIONED was um having a bunch of portal gets at cb i knew right then it was over.

Um didnt turn down flowers he went elsewhere and it wasnt just the bag

Honestly don’t bother bro. People here twist the narrative to fit their needs.

Jeremiah Smith could jump in the portal next December, sign with Miami, and dudes on here be like there goes Mario again taking dudes in the portal over the young guys.

JADood is just a bad combination of "wrong", "insanely wrong", "arrogant", and "condescending".

Toxic mix.
You know I don't pay attention to much on here anymore. But I wouldn't say he's wrong right now when it relates to what he's said on Scott. I get what @DMoney is saying because he's speaking on his 23 year. He actually showed an upside in 23. But last season the dude was god awful. Whether you say that's because he wasn't comfortable outside or any other reasoning, all you can really say factually is he was passed up several times last year and he regressed badly

Not disagreeing with the basic premise. As I have pointed out, he had an ankle injury in 2024. I'd imagine that you, more than just about anyone on the board, can appreciate how an injury can impact one's play.

I was more critical of the armchair analysts focusing solely on his stats, as if they had some advanced degree in mathematics that serves as an infallible predictor of football excellence.

You and I agree, his body of work in 2024 was not as good as 2023 (SEC) or the prior two years (JuCo). If there is a reasonable explanation (injury, position change), then I'd expect the coaches to take that into account.

That is all. It's one thing to have legitimate questions. It's another thing for one particular poster (JADood) to go into every thread repeating the same exact statistical criticisms without listening to any other viewpoints.

I don't think this is our best spring portal signing. But if the 2024 drop-off was due to the ankle injury, we may have gotten very lucky with this signing.

To be determined. I try not to pre-judge based on one bad year out of four, particularly if there is an explanation.

If you get a chance to see him in August, let me know what you think.

I will disagree with @DMoney 's assesment on Cantwell. Especially before the Georgia visit. The only place Georgia has made up "ground" is in the minds of On3 and 247 "clickbait" reporters that need to sell subs.

In the real world Miami leads. Either Georgia steps up to the plate $$$ and beat our offer or they can give him whatever stipend and beg only to see him commit to Miami.

Edit: The other option is that Cantwell
is in the Brandon Inniss plan where he takes SIGNIFICANTLY less because he really wants to play for UGA. In other words he loves Kirby more than I love my wife. If he is one of the rare ones then by all means nothing we could do.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, Miami WILL NOT and HAS NOT been outbid here. They have put everything into this recruitment and they wont lose because of a dollar amount.

Miami can sell NFL development among the OL with Mario/Mirabal just like UGA can, and we are top dog with our offer $$.

If he goes there then there was literally nothing Miami could do except drag his *** with FBI agents and lock him up at the Hecht.
That's a pretty low bar for most husbands

I mean, it wouldn’t be the end of the world
We didn’t get a big fish last cycle. We’re not really in the thick of it for any other top 10-15 prospects nationally. We need someone to be the leader of this class. It’s more so what Cantwell represents than the prospect himself. You sign Cantwell you instantly get A LOT more eyes.

The best wanna play with the best.

Myself I always try and see the upside and the purpose and why we're bringing in the individuals we choose to sign. I understand the purpose in this kid and I hope the factors that you and dmoney pointed out are the underlying causes for his regression. I also get a constant harping of negativity some people chose to do. It's why I don't pay attention often anymore & don't engage often. Let's see how it all plays out. Because I still have concerns at safety, & with zay walking those concerns are heightened.

@Brooklyndee, if Scott turns out to be a bust at S, can we still cover with our other DBs? Assuming Poyser starts and is healthy, we have Thomas, Williams and Day to fill 1 spot, and can tap into Lucas and Brown if needed. Is that respectable enough or another train wreck?

I don't want to make any assumptions that Buddy's going to be no good That's the last thing that I'd want is for us to bring somebody in that's just worthless also the reasons we've taken such length and we coach the scheme up to versatility is that exact purpose. We want multiple roles filled by multiple players. For myself though like I heightened last year I don't want somebody that's playing multiple positions at safety to where he might have any kinds of confusion on his role. I want somebody playing safety that's played safety for a good chunk of his life and understands his responsibilities. Because as we are now everything we did to flip the DB room in the offseason it's not guaranteed to give us the results we want. We're still stuck on praying the defensive line can get home and that communication will be far better than last season or multiple other ones for that instance.

I know for a fact that NC State, FSU and UFag reached out to Kinsler’s camp a few times since the end of the season.

I think he’s the 6th guy right now, which is huge considering he’s beat out a 5* guy for that role.

Why Okunlola stayed is a mystery to me. Last year at this time I was hyping him up. ****, I think since the October of his Fr year I’ve been saying he was on his way up.

This spring, I am disappoint.
Already knew he was a jag and over rated year 1, when you dont see a guy stand out with the same type of talent next to him (not the midgets he played in HS) there is a higher chance they wont pan out.

For the record, I doubt Scott is going to be a bust. I don't think Etheridge would risk his reputation on him twice (Houston and Miami) if he didn't believe he could add value. I was just playing out the scenario of what might happen if he does bust. It wouldn't be ideal. But I am hopeful we'd still have enough pieces on the chessboard to execute the defense effectively. I was hoping you'd agree. But I entirely understand you're in "wait and see" or "show me" mode.

Again like I said if be chooses anyone else it wont be because lf money.

The numbers
they cite are wrong

Missouri is my take...

College football will continue to look more and more like the NFL salary structure. Money will go to QB, LT, and Edge and some will get paid solely because they play that position. it's just the price of doing business

Easy to tell Miami wasn't in the mix when they reclassed early after they took all those dbs. Wouldn't have taken as many dbs if they knew it was in the works.

Hard to stand out year 1 when you get a season ending injurying 3 games into the season.

The Portal is cooling down and recruiting is heating up. Here is the latest:

- Miami is in a good position for nickel Keionte Scott (Auburn). He was a preseason All-SEC player and Senior Bowl kid at nickel before moving outside and struggling. He has NFL upside if he regains form with his old coach, Zac Etheridge.

- The Canes are also in a strong spot for LB Mohamed Toure (Rutgers). He was previously coached by Miami DC Corey Hetherman and was one of the best LBs in the Big 10 in 2023 before an ACL injury. He is expected to be full go.

- I don’t anticipate any other action. Miami didn’t love the DT value available and is prepared to forward with their bigger DEs ans inside options alongside DT Artavius Jones.

- The battle for Jackson Cantwell (Nixa, MO) feels like a tennis match. Miami had all the momentum a couple weeks ago, Georgia is picking up steam and may have taken the lead, but Miami feels they are still very much alive. It doesn’t seem like Oregon is a huge threat.

- Some other names Miami is working hard as the focus shifts back to recruiting: WR Calvin Russell (Northwestern), WR Vance Stafford (Orange County, CA), OL Canon Pickett (Tampa), DE Asharri Charles (Venice, FL), and S Blake Stewart (Atlanta).

- One sneaky retention we haven’t talked about- OL Tommy Kinsler (Ocala, FL). He had a great spring.
Big Kinsler from my hometown of Ocala!! Hoping for big things from him down the road. Really hoped he and Okunlola would make a huge jump this season. Guess we'll see

lets see if we land anyone from NW, starting to see a trend there

Well Campbell is there now, and he appears to be very solid

Johnson and Russell are the other targets this year, although like Campbell, Johnson just transferred in.
