The Bank (4/15)

Toney produced more consistently than RayRay at the same age. It's a small sample of just one spring, so take it with a grain of salt. Toney is more advanced as a receiver (RayRay was a RB) and really unique in terms of football IQ.

I think there is more trust in Toney than the average freshman because of his combination of natural instincts/IQ and preparation. In terms of his game, very good quickness, feel for space and ability to adjust to the ball.
I attended practice and agree with this assessment. Toney stands out. He will play and has a bright future. He is also better than RayRay.

With that said, grab Pena and let Toney learn the slot position from Pena. Toney then assumes the starting role the following year and eats.

Appreciate it, D.

I wish everyone on TV and media in general would highlight your point. Salary cap or not, nothing will stop NIL because the US Supreme Court has essentially written that a person cannot be restricted in their ability to earn money from their own NIL.
Maybe a salary structure will shift some NIL money to salary, but schools will still be able to exceed the cap by labeling additional money as NIL.

Yes.

And once schools can pay a good "base salary", and there is more scrutiny on whatever currently masquerades as "NIL", then you begin to have a more normalized system. Right now "all" of the extra money a player gets is "NIL". But most professional athletes (depending on position and fame, of course) get most of their money from salary, and then supplement with endorsements.

Would be nice to have that kind of a system. Players get fair (if modest) compensation directly from the schools, whether they are freshmen or play immediately, and then can add to that with LEGITIMATE NIL opportunities.

We shall see.

Agreed. The professional sports model makes more sense than what is happening now in college. Of course, it made more sense 60 years ago as well but the NC2A and its member institutions fought to keep all the money away from the players.

Then I can guarantee you it will be rejected by the judge. Anything that limits NIL is against the law. It’s a crime to do so. So that part will be rejected guaranteed.
The judge has already approved that part of the settlement. Conferences are all on board too. Tbh, its just going to push things under the table again. But this explains it pretty well.

"To help keep wealthier teams from using boosters or NIL collectives to gain an advantage by exceeding the cap, the NCAA's power conferences are creating a clearinghouse, separate from the NCAA, to approve future NIL deals between players and boosters. The House settlement states that athletes have to report any NIL deal they sign with a third party that is worth more than $600 and that any such deal has to be for a "valid business purpose."

The power conferences have contracted with auditing giant Deloitte to review booster NIL deals and decide whether each is a legitimate endorsement contract or a veiled attempt to circumvent the salary cap.

The power conferences are also creating a new organization tasked to enforce the salary cap and "fair market value" rules. This new entity will be separate from the NCAA's enforcement arm.

A group of 10 power conference athletic directors have been meeting regularly during the past six months to design the new organization.

The settlement will give them some new tools -- most notably a binding arbitration process that could speed up resolutions, provide the new enforcement group with greater power to compel coaches and schools to turn over evidence and make it more difficult to challenge punishments in court."

I’m just here for the annual “there’s an unnamed SEC stud receiver that we’re trying to poach we’ll know within the week” conversation before we end up with this years version of Sam Brown or Frank Ladson or whatever and then the portal closes and it’s like “yeah we had Zay Flowers thhhhhiiiissss close”. **** makes me feel alive.

Underrated post. Not liking what I'm hearing.

Sam Brown was highly thought of on this board though lol. That's using hindsight.

I’ll only believe you attended practice if you insist on telling us Lofton is the best player on the team for no reason

I personally think Pena is a stud. The one that hurts is Singleton (GT transfer to Auburn). If we had Beck lined up earlier, I think he's a Cane. No guarantee someone with that profile comes available again.
I wanted Singleton so bad because Ray Ray was never it. Would have Beck helped? Sure but Singleton did not come because Miami did not want to meet his asking price. Singleton wasn’t coming at a discounted price.

Pena has missed more games with injury than he's played. One good season with one of the best QBs in football.
well whats one more year.

I agree we liked him but I don't think anyone had him pegged as a surefire, can't miss #1 guy. Which is what we always hear we are hunting.
I mean kinda but not really since we had Restrepo returning who we saw as our WR and good pairing in slot with Cam and Dawson's offense. And George had a good season and they absolutely expected Horton to also take the jump kinda like they expect Trader to this yr, though I think they expect more from Trader than they did Horton. They wanted a deep threat with Brown. This yr I absolutely think we need a better WR than we did last year, without a doubt
