Off-Topic Texas A&M's top receiver just got arrested, facing gun + drug charges

Miami gets a bad rap as a city and place for these kids go to college, but swear to God, it's the small-town yokel style living that is infinitely worse for these kids.

Come to Miami and sure, there are parts of the city where trouble will find you—but idle hands and nothing to do in a dump like College Station, Texas can be so much worse as these kids are just looking to fill their down time—and that's where real trouble can brew.

It's human nature; staying busy and having multiple options and things to do can actually keep you from doing dumb things that get you in trouble.

All the moronic things I did with buddies at a teenager; usually came from having a lot of time, no money, limited resources and nothing to do—which led to the kinds of things that got us hurt, other people hurt or resulting in some type of illegal activity, or property damage.

I usually agree with your takes, but not this one.

Here, there, or anywhere he's going to be driving around towards some destination with what he got popped for.

As for nothing to do, that'd be wrong. It has the one thing most college kids are into. Plenty of tail to chase and parties. Besides the work you've gotta do as a student athlete, that's what college kids look for. There's plenty there and you don't have to drive all over the city of Miami to get to it. It's closer, that's what the town was built on.

He was doing what many get busted for, at least in part. Same **** happens here and every college campus in the country. I don't advocate for it, but it happens. He got caught. Sucks and I'm not a fan of kicking some young man while he's down. Hope he gets what he deserves though, learns, grows, and becomes a better person for it. It's a teachable moment and hopefully he takes it serious.

This is something alot of our fans dont think about when it comes to recruiting. Everyone is quick to drop the "wtf are they gonna do in tuscaloosa or athens or college station" bull****. There is more than enough to keep college kids busy and entertained in most of these small college towns. not every kid cares about the beach or the big city environment or perfect weather.

@AtlAtty - does this sound to you like a suspended sentence with X number of community hours?

I think the weed charge goes away, but what’s the bill for the DWI and the unlawful weapon?

I’m not familiar with how they prosecute this in Texas, and I understand you’re based in Georgia, but just wondering based on your experience what this ends up looking like for the player. I mean other than maybe some 1 or 2 game suspension, that’s all I see from the school, but I’m more interested in terms of any legal repercussions that may somehow affect his playing time, because just from what I know, I don’t see anything that would do that.

As a total novice, I would expect he doesn’t do a single day, and it’s more like some community service type sentence which he can do between games or over a period of a year or whatever.
It depends where he was arrested in Texas if you get the jest.

You downvoted & implied that I root for bad things to happen to players.
I downvoted because a young man with a ton of potential put himself and others at risk and I don't care to talk about players' legal troubles. Sometimes private things should stay private. And, things could have gone very differently. Everyone makes stupid decisions; some people get more leeway than others depending on their situations. Happy that at least he's safe and hopefully will learn from that. I'm sure some people are happy that happened to him, idk if you're one of them.

Outsiders have know idea the workings of football in Tx. College Station takes care of local players second to none. It's amazing how good the community truly is. This is truly a non story.
Are you saying they won't punish him or they'll help him not do something like this again?

Will be handled “in house”. We don’t discuss “internal” discipline. Oh and “there’s 3 sides to every story”.

If he is found guilty, then any suspension he may receive could be decided by the schools administration,; not Jimbo.
How much did they just pay for a class etc. I’d bet the boosters there have more say than the administration

I could tell you the time when I played there under RC and let's just say Jimbo is alot more lenient. The powerful boosters will not allow him to miss more than a half of the first game is what's floating around here in summer camps.

I couldn't care less about a Texas A&M WR or his personal troubles. This had significance to me only as far as the fact that it might keep him out of the game against us, which was the only reason I made the post. You think it should be kept private but it was all over the sports news blogs. He plays major college football, that's just the way it is. But I guess you're something like the football version of Captain save a ho, so I will leave you to your good deeds, my upstanding citizen.

A good article discussing the potential impact of any significant suspension-

"Everybody makes mistakes. Some are felt more than others. That mistake will be felt for an A&M offense that already lost tight end Jalen Wydermyer (NFL), Caleb Chapman (transfer), Demond Demas (transfer), as well as pass-catching back Isaiah Spiller (NFL).

Smith is the only A&M receiver who had 20 catches last year. If he’s out for any length of time to start the season — don’t forget that Miami waits in Week 3 and Arkansas is in Week 4 - A&M’s top returning receiver would be Devon Achane. As in, tailback Devon Achane, who had 24 catches for 261 yards."

Haha that last line was funny. Maybe it's a vocation like Coach Cristobal says. Thanks for sharing info on the actual team in your last post, was not aware they had lost that much firepower.
