TE Elija Lofton: I do whatever I can to make the team elite

It's all good. I'll take the L on my list. Some of it’s serious and some of the list is an attempt at humor. I can see where it doesn't make sense. I'm all over the place.
Board gets a little carried away when we hear positive things from spring practice and people jump in like “SHUT UP AND SHOW ME!”

Which like, I get, but also maybe just take the offseason off then 😂

Not many made him out to be Winslow, but he was definitely spun.He had a large contingent of guys who smelled the BS early though. These are just a couple.

Not one of those is even in the same universe as comparing him to "kellen winslow" lol. Come on, that is almost exclusively saying they like him because they expected him to solely be used as a traditional 3rd TE to come in and block. That's not how he was used at all. That is not even close to some greentree hype. It was mostly literally just saying he'll be a fine take as a blocking TE.

The spin is always incredible... everyone on this board knew we needed OL when Mario walked in the door and he went out and brought in Denis and Saggy and the board got excited about the weight room routine... season came, OL depth sucked. 5-7. Blamed on injuries to the OL and TVD...

I would say it's more like fans doing fan things or humans doing human things.

Does this mean I formation with lofton at fb 👀👀👀 defenses are built to stop the spread offense in today's world.. I formation is core miami hurricane football

I think you may be on to something. Who really could stop an offense that lines up in 22 personel exclusively?

I think this is why we aren't portalling in a WR.... we won't need em!

Nobody has generated more buzz this spring than true freshman TE/RB/FB/WR Elija Lofton. The Las Vegas native has played all over the field, making one-handed catches, long runs and other huge plays against the first-team defense. Lofton met with reporters to discuss his first spring at Miami:

His overall impressions of spring: It’s been a blessing to be able to play football, the game I love. I'm just looking up to the big guys like Riley [Williams], Elijah [Arroyo], Cam [McCormick]. They’re teaching me everything. I’m soaking it up, and trying to use it to help me get better every day.

On his mentality: Play fast. Play physical. Just balling. Height, speed don't mean nothing. It's in your heart and what you do as a person. You can do anything you want to do in life. I just go out there, have fun, do what I can and make plays.

On where his mindset came from: My mom. She always pushed me every day to be the best man I can be on and off the field. My mindset really comes from her, because she's a hard-working young lady. She's always with the church. She works with the school district, so she's just busy working hard. I get everything from her.

On his versatility: I just came here to play ball and get on the field. So anything Coach Cristobal needs me to do, I'm just gonna do it. Go at it full speed and do it the best I can.

It's football. You’ve got to be comfortable anywhere. You’ve got to line up and just go play ball. I do whatever I do to help the team be elite.

On his measurables: I’m 6’2, 235-240.

On his inspirations as a player: I pick some game up from Deebo [Samuel], but another guy I look up to is Brevin Jordan. He's like a big brother to me, so I take some of his game and apply it to mine. He always comes back and talks to us.

I’m always texting him and getting advice. [Brevin] told me to go be great, told me to stay disciplined, stay locked in, be humble, and just go make plays and ball out.

On Cam McCormick: He’s really smart with the game. He knows a lot about defense, blocking, routes. I learn a lot [from him] about reading defenses, blocking schemes, alignments, slants, stuff like that.

I'm starting to get Najeh Davenport vibes the more I hear about him. Davenport was more of a true TB pre ACL, but EL is sounding like he could play any position and make an impact.

Those aren't my words or thoughts. Go back and look at some posts of before the 2023 season started. You would think he was the second coming of Kellen Winslow II.
I remember some saying early on that he was a good depth acquisition because of his experience etc and some were saying that Zo's NFL background had a lot to do with the McCormick pickup because although he was far from a superstar he had experience and some skills that could help the team in different situations making him a good depth piece and therefore a smart pickup. Nobody ever said he was some total stud or anything close to that.

The problem with McCormick last year is that instead of playing the type of complimentary depth and situational role that he was supposed to play, the whole situation with the TE room made it so the staff had little choice but to play Cam much more than they would have liked. When you play a depth piece type player as a regular starter then that players flaws become greatly exposed.

This season Elijah Arroyo is finally healthy and Riley Williams is a sophomore and is greatly improved. To add to that, we apparently have a player in Lofton who doesn't realize that he is a true freshman and is making plays all over the field in every type of situation and at multiple positions whether it's TE, H-Back, Slot WR or RB. This is a verified fact and is not the product of the CIS hype machine. With all of the above going for the TE room, I truly do not see a reason for the coaches to play Cam McCormick in any role other than the one he was originally brought in to play. A depth piece that nobody notices too much.

Funny you mention Najeh. I was just thinking about the same comparison for Lofton. What stopped me short was the fact that Najeh had great speed pre ACL which I don't think Lofton necessarily has. I would be very interested to find out Lofton's 40 time. I tried to look it up in the usual recruiting sites but there were no 40 times listed for him.
