Steele's defense and some...

On the defense I’m curious why y’all keep saying we didn’t blitz. I just watched the game over and Steele sent quite a few blitzes…..they didn’t get home because when we blitzed it was a quick 1 second throw but there was like 3 that was actually close to being sacks

I don’t think they’d whip this years Bethune. I watched that QB from Sam Houston yesterday and he wasn’t very good tbh. They did have nice athletes on Defense tho. I think Bethune skill guys are better tyo
Didn’t watch the A&M game but I see Sam Houston every year in the fcs playoffs. Won it recently

Easily my favourite thing and it was the simplest thing known to coaching, there was a plan for contain....

If you pay attention to the BCU run game you'll see a DE play the squeeze and the linebacker plays spills and it was not only nice to see an actual coach coaching a defense properly and fundamentally sound, but when I actually watch the tackling method, you'll also notice that its not just guys flying downhill as fast and they can trying to make a big chicken wing hit, you'll see the tackler, squaring up and usually playing outside half of the ball carrier and and exploding with their hips.
These eyes almost cried when I saw this, these are the type of things that make me feel better bout the direction of the program and the coaches that are on staff, little things. In conjunction to properly OL play, I at least feel better about how we are on the field, at least so far.

Steele didn't show much of his playbook anyways. Everything he did was just vanilla stuff. I didn't see many stunts or disguising blitzes. The only reason BCU was able to score was because of us making mental mistakes or missing tackles. If Steele truly went all out against BCU I doubt they would score a TD all game. We're not going to get a good understanding of this defense until ACC play and even then we're still going to give up points, it's just the nature of college football.

Rewatched every defensive snap today. 24 was the best player on the field & it wasn’t close. 11 is hard to watch. Usually the slow guys are quick to diagnose. He is just a body out there. Unless the play is directly at him he isn’t making the tackle. It was really hard to watch when truly zeroing in on him. The DT’s actually played a really good game. 8 needs to be put in a cannon & shot to outer space. Again, #24 is the best player on that side of the ball.
Put in a cannon and shot to outer space.

So good.

Many points made here regarding contain of the QB. That stood out to me as well. We gave up too many QB scrambles out of the pocket. That's another item to clean up. Against a better team we are in major trouble

Spoiler alert, but our season success will go as the defense goes. Containment issues, tackling issues, coverage issues. As it stands right now if we don't fix these then we better have folks making big impact plays consistently to over compensate. Otherwise we are toast against the bulk of our schedule. Be a realist
One game against a FCS school we put 70 on and this is what you come up with....

Coming into the year I thought the pass rush would be a huge strength. At the very least there’d be a big upgrade from last year. I believe there‘s plenty of quickness and power off the edge but i don’t think there’s much more. I don’t see a technician that has a repertoire of pass rush moves or bend to make himself skinny. It was mostly power , trying to walk a guy back to the qb or speed rushes. Thomas Davis and Kelly look the most natural but at this point they’re just specialists and need some more size / seasoning.

I noticed watching Agudes film at UCLA that he was an effort guy with violent hands but once again it was all about walking the OT back. Power and strength. The same happened yesterday. If our guys can’t win with straight speed on the snap or over powering a guy pressure will be an issue. Imo LT or Jackson should be on the field on pass downs with maybe Mesidoor beside one. Causing pressure from the inside. Lichtenstein and Moultrie should get more pt as well. Moultrie showed some good burst inside.

The DL room is deep , talented and will be a strength but Imo we’ll need to cause pressure with scheme. Stunts and twists to play to DL’s strengths and mix that with blitzes. The only real issues is we have a lot of guys with the same skill sets / strengths. But are raw in other areas. Just my two cents.
This was my concern even after the portal signings. We’ll be able to get pressures but I don’t think we have the guys yet to consistently get their hands on the QB. The caveat to this though is blitzing. I’m not familiar with Steeles blitzing appetite or packages. If we can at least force quick and bad throws consistently I’ll take it.

I don’t know how y’all wanna see Flagg fail. Most of you are literally rooting against him which is mind boggling cause most of you have no athletic ability and should be rooting for someone like him to reach his max potential. Culturally Flagg is what we want. Eventually much better options will come along but he has a place on this team. **** unathletic porsters calling a LB for miami “unathletic”

he's at his max potential

that's the problem

you got the same words for ivey? When is he gonna max out in your honest opinion then?

Ivey will prob never reach max potential on game day. And I’m not a grown man rooting against Ivey either. I’m rooting for all our players to succeed. Including Flagg and Ivey. They are kids.

It comes out that Flagg was one of defensive players of the game and everyone is butt hurt like he offended y’all. That’s just the fans trying to say **** that fits their narrative cause they don’t like him. That’s not a player thing that’s a personal thing

I saw plenty of potential issues on D for sure, hard to gauge with this being a glorified scrimmage. Hoping they are crafty enough to work around some of our deficiencies. Need some of the young bucks to mature fast.
So did I. I know Offense was very vanilla, but on Defense I saw glaring need for speed, especially at LB and CB. We still have a problem getting outside and downhill on wide runs or QB takeoff runs. CB's having problems getting off blocks on WR screens and tackling. #8 was doing Ivey and Addae/Steele better recognize that and get Malik, Rodgers or Graves in there. I rather take a chance with faster and better youth when we know Ivey is a proven liability.

Staff gets paid wayyy too much money for the defense to come out looking like that. Execution and finishing plays against southern miss is gonna have to go up dramatically to have a shot at TAMU
And your over exaggerating wayyy to much for one game!
