Stat that floored me

Yeah I am. I still think most OL take years to develop and money isn’t changing that. That’s just physical attributes from 18 to 21. I still think it’s fair criticism with the money involved but there’s just reality. If teams invest that kind of money in an OL up front, it’s a massive gamble. Same with QBs. So we have to be determined to pay big money with no returns for years and with a lot of risk. I think he could still be called an interim bust after this year if he doesn’t develop but his story won’t be written in stone until closer to the end of his time in college. I’m also disappointed in Kinsler but the money makes it seem different
Whenever I start to get disappointed in one of our young linemen, I remind myself that we are playing the long game with many of them and that there are only 5 guys who really get snaps on the OL. If we didn't have Cici at RT and Markel the freak at LT, I would be incredibly disappointed in Honcho. I think both Cici and Bell get drafted in the first 3 rounds, maybe higher. Cici of course first round material.

I think the real issue is sorting out the compensation for the high school recruits....and good luck with that. However if there was some sort of deferred compensation where they have to hit certain milestones to get paid, maybe it would make a difference, but I also realize that now we are entering contract/lawyer stuff and that is 100% out of my wheelhouse. Had we not overpaid for Honcho, someone else would have.

The success of this defensive line and this team overall will depend on the development of the 2024 defensive line recruiting class. Three 5 stars and one high 4 star will have to play like it. All of the spring reports point about the three 5 stars, Scott, Blount, and Lightfoot, all having impressive springs and the 4 star, Jones, showing flashes. If these guys can take that step, this defense will be nasty.

Defensive Line Potential 2 Deep
DE Rueben Bain JR • 6-4 275 • 4 star
DT David Blay RSR • 6-4 305 • 4 star
DT Ahmad Moten RJR • 6-3 325 • 3 star
DE Akheem Mesidor RSR • 6-3 280 • 4 star(portal ranking)

DE Armondo Blount SO • 6-4 260 • 5 star
DT Justin Scott SO • 6-4 310 • 5 star
DT Artavius Jones RFR • 6-3 320 • 4 star
DE Marquise Lightfoot RFR • 6-4 240 • 5 star or Malik Bryant RSO • 6-2 240 • 4 star

Michigan won the national championship in 2023 with young DT’s playing a major role

Starters
Kris Jenkins RJR • 6-3 • 308 • 3 star
Mason Graham SO • 6-4 • 296 • 4 star

Backups:
Rayshaun Benny JR • 6-4 296 • 4 star
Kenneth Grant SO • 6- 4 335 • 3 star

They rounded out their championship DT rotation with converted offensive lineman Reece Atteberry and true freshman Trey Pierce

We also have Lowe, Herbert Scroggins III, and Pickett, who are all 4* Edge.

I hear what you're saying, although they are two very different points that sort of bleed together. I would counter with how many other five star OT's were first round draft picks (or even 2nd round) after three years? How many 5 star OTs were in their respective classes? I could look it up, but quite honestly, I'm fundamentally lazy and I have an agenda to push here.

I think the fairest thing you said was "if he doesn’t take a respectable step up this season, I will consider him a bust to an extent though he will still be able to change that narrative the following year..." Basically you've acknowledged that his story is still being written. It's the payday that is making some folks go nuts over his lack of playing time/development.

Oh, yeah I don’t disagree with signing him. He was a recognized top tier recruit. I’m not remotely sold on Bell. I don’t think he’s been that good. I think he’s lumbering and slow against edge rushing speed demons. Some agree with me, some don’t. I think I’m correct so far but Bell could take a step and then it’s a new game.

I agree with you on Bell. I thought he looked exactly like you would expect a 6'9" JUCO kid to look at first. He was clumsy and not so coordinated. I think he improved as the year went on, but still has a ton of work to do to get better. However, and this is why I said 3rd round or better, you can't coach 6'9" and 340 lbs. I'm curious to see how he looks in the fall.

If Justin Scott is a first-rounder, we're winning a **** ton of football games this year.
The two don't necessarily equate at all. Justin Scott can't go to the NFL after this year and more than likely won't after next year either. But at the very least he still has a minimum two years. So him becoming a first rounder or not isn't relevant to this particular seasons results.

I’m talking about playing this year as a first rounder. I know he can’t declare yet. I’m saying if, after the ND game, we all say “That MF is a first-rounder”, the defense is gonna be completely unlocked.

I’m not saying he needs to play like he’s ready for the NFL. Just show that he’s on that trajectory aka he’s an elite player.

No we didn’t, b/c this board was told the secondary is secondary (pun intended) when we have studs along the trenches & front 7.

So like I said, nah.

I was definitely on that side of the argument last season, and our former defensive coordinator made a fool of me

How a paid professional could **** up that much pass rush talent boggles my mind

It’s 100% the payday level to me. Boosters don’t pay millions for someone who doesn’t contribute for years and consider that successful. Money changes everything, particularly with expectations. I think it’s great that they are getting paid. I think there needs to be a framework like in pro sports otherwise it’s chaos.
My take on Samson as someone with zero insider knowledge: The staff is either really high on him or he’s taken a significant pay cut. This staff isn’t afraid to tell underperforming, big money guys to hit the portal. I don’t think they’re paying a guy like Okunlola a ton of cash to be a career backup. I think there’s definitely something there that keeps him around. Maybe this year he breaks out.

What makes him a career backup? Is his time in college complete or even close to it at that?

Recutting is great and has never been the problem. The issue is talent evaluation and development. There really are no more excuses not to win the ACC this year

I played into that too, didn’t think the secondary was going to be what it had been in ‘23 but it was evident early that the secondary was numbingly uncommunicative (not to say it wasn’t in 23) but was dumb enough to think that elephant fronts and stunting and dropping out with them guys was going to assist the secondary with the looks and buying time for the rest of the rush and we’d be able to get home. Wrong.

Six Composite five stars on OL and DL since 2023. Most in America during that span. And that doesn’t include Hayden Lowe, who was a 247 five star but not Composite.

Alabama was second with five, and Georgia and Texas tied with four.

Time to win now!! We need to get over the hump ACC Championship or bust!!
