Stat comparison with last year

Couple caveats here. There are better teams in the second half of the schedule, so some of these stats may change considerably. Second, when comparing 2020 to 2019, I measured the 2020 stats by where they would rank last year. This year's rankings don't mean much given the staggered conference schedules.

2020- 6.1% (70th)

Takeaways per game

2019- 1.6 (40th)
2020- 1.5 (44th)

Quick observations. Big improvements in scoring offense (+73) and third-down percentage (+105). Also much better in the red zone (+93) and FGs (+98). Our pass protection is much improved but still bad.

Our pass rush (-68) and rush defense (-46) are way down. Shaq and Rousseau are the big personnel losses there. Our pass defense (+30) and third down defense (+32) are trending up, likely due to a more experienced secondary. Our scoring defense is stable so far but will be tested in the weeks to come.
That oline sack rate has fallen off a cliff last few games.. Not all on oline (like UVA, King held on to ball til last second but his knee hits ground while trying to throwaway too late) but they have had some bad moments. Im guessing rushing stats have also fallen off cliff in same time period as we cant run ball

This is encouraging. We all want instant results. Under the circumstances, this is a positive. I understand that building a program-a winning program-takes time. That said, my eyes are telling me to put these numbers aside because the last 2 games have me feeling otherwise. I'll reserve my judgment through the end of the season and hope we get better.

We added Roche and Phillips and our sack % has gone down. 🤔
****.

some is no longer having Greg but also we have played teams with mobile QB’s

every team we have played has a QB who can scramble so far. Blackman was the only one who couldn’t but they started to bring Travis in late.

A lot of our sacks are based on recovers not getting open, because mark Harley one most of his one on ones last game we were able to avoid some sacks now we just have to address the interior of our offensive line

We played Bethune central Michigan and fiu last year and played none of those games this year so if anything it’s skewed the other way. I’m sure the 2020 numbers would look better if you threw a Bethune game in there
Especially PPG and YPC.

the defense stats that have worsen are due to scheme and passive playcalling more than anything else.
Even though everyone on our defense is an older experienced player we lost 6 of our front 7 from last year and our top 4 DEs. We were counting on our top player returning to anchor but he quit, huge loss to lose your best returning player, its been down played but 6 of front 7 is alot.

So our defense got worst and we haven’t played the better teams yet (aside from Clemson)

@DMoney can you compare one more stat, please? Chunk plays of 10 yards or more in 2019 vs 2020 for the defense.

These fluctuations boil down to a few things. We haven't recruited well enough to have depth at positions and the drop off in run defense and sack production shows it. We still have some rigid coaches that can't adjust on defense to fit their personnel or play guys that have a better chance of making the plays asked of them in the scheme. OL is progressing but is always a lagging position. Takes a while for most guys that aren't elite status recruits to develop. All in all improvement but not enough to be comfortable.

Here are Rousseau's stats with sacks included:

Summary: UF, UNC, Central Mich, UVA, VA Tech = 1 Sack per game
La Tech = 1.5 Sacks
Duke = 2 sacks
Pitt = 3 Sacks
FSU = 4 Sacks

Canes lost games to UF, UNC, Va Tech , Duke and La Tech

TBH not going by numbers but our defense took a step back (which I always thought before the season) and our offense took a slight step forward. Judging this off optics.
u know whats crazy bruh... i see ppl saying we rely on big plays too much on offense and then complain that the big plays on defense are down. they want us to have almost a slow 4 yards every play 8 minute offense and a boom or bust defense... folks wild

i agree in general tho we a little too passive

Not fair to compare 13 games to 6, large sample size difference. We will see a regression to the mean, especially for the rushing stats. The only places we have improved from last year on the field is kicker, QB, and safety. OL has been marginally better, mostly due to scheme.

The last few years all we talked about was get a competent offense and we’ll go 11-1/10-2 every year. Lashlee has gotten us to respectability and to the point where we expect 30+ a game in 1/2 a season.

We’ll see where we end up but going from bottom of the barrel to top 50% is a nice jump for now. OL and WR will keep us from being great.
