Stanton to the Yanks Last Straw for Marlins fans?

The Florida Marlins (I will not call them anything else), has some of the most perplexing history I have ever seen.

So much so, that fans do not need to worry when the Marlins are bad. They need to worry when they are good, because historically, ownership pretty much says, "Oh ****, they are winning! We need to sell half the team."

With the Marlins, it's almost like the plot to the movie Major League.

You'd think a MLB team in south Florida would have an easy time. Not sure why all pro sports teams are such disasters

Jeter bought a team he couldn't afford and had to use a ton of debt to finance it. Now we are stuck with a broke owner who can't afford to put a team together. Jorge Mas would have been much better.

No, the problem is the team was broke to begin with...they weren’t making money the last 2 year because of the 110 mil cap. Why? No one wants to watch a team that can’t pitch and blows 2-3 run leads.

A team is as rich as it’s owner. It doesn’t matter if they run at a loss if the owner doesn’t care. That’s the case with plenty of teams especially in soccer. Derek Jeter is poor compared to most owners and should not have bought a team he can not afford. Now the team has massive debt and he is still scrambling for more investors to make ends meet.

This is South Florida, man. You gots to win if you want us to come out to the game, but make no mistake, the people are rabid about their teams and just as knowledgeable as any of the other beacon sports towns. It just it takes a lot for us to brave traffic and pay outrageous parking fees to go see a team live. If we're gonna do that, you better be putting on a show.

If you're stinking up the joint, we can go to the beach and listen to the game, or to one of the many fine gentlemen club establishments down here and watch it. Other cities don't have the plethora of entertainment options that Miami does.

He’s not the owner, Jorge Mas is. Jeter just put in 25 million so he can be Director of Operations. The team is poor because Loria made it poor, he cap strapped the marlins as if they were the Detroit Tigers(and at least they won until they got old)and they team had a short term outlook with no way to resign J.T Realmuto(borderline all star catcher who should’ve been one last year), Dan Straily, Jose Urena, Marcel Ozuna(All Star), Justin Bour, and Riddle who’s up and coming in the span of 3-4 years with no way to replace any of them because our minor league system has become the worst in baseball since beinfest in 2013.

Another rebuild for this sorry baseball franchise. Fans in Miami got to be sick of this. Any chance this team gets moved to Vegas or Portland resulting in a nice empty stadium for us to inherit?
Skip this nonsense,City of Miami has a long term binding contract. After all they were dealing
with Luria, what did you expect a six month lease?

Jorge Mas had a competing bid for the marlins that did not win. As far as I know he’s not involved with the current team. If he was the owner it would be a different story, he has the money to pay people.

Sorry I meant Bruce Sherman but the point still stands. If we kept Stanton and increased payroll again like he wanted we wouldn’t be able to pay anybody else(why do you think Loria back loaded the contract?) so I’m not mad we traded him...just how it was orchestrated and who we got.

I'm still a Marlins fan after four firesales and the death of my favorite player in his prime. It will take more than this to discourage me.

This was Loria's mess. Trading Stanton was the smart thing to do for a new owner that doesn't want to lose millions on a bad team. It's a horrible look but the fans are gone anyway. Rebuild the farm, repair the finances and get in a position to keep the next great player. That's how you regain trust.

This has been the story three or four times already, man. The Marlins future isn't in this market. They're still looking for investors and they aren't looking for dumb money either. You're not going to sell people on investing to slug it out in the Miami market.

Miami loves baseball. They just don't trust the Marlins.

The WBC at Marlins Park was insane. Incredible passion and noise. This is a town filled with Cubans and Venezuelans. The NE transplants in Broward love baseball, too. Kids play it at a high level throughout South Florida.

They need to build a playoff team and keep it together. That's the only way to restore trust. Even if it takes a little exile, it will be worth it if done right.

God, I hope there is no long term plan to get rid of the team. Not having a MLB team here would be an embarrassment...I mean, as you say, baseball isn't exactly unpopular here. I agree......as with all the other teams, South Florida will show up for the Marlins if the Marlins can ever put a good product on the field.

This. It doesn't matter whether you are the Heat, Dolphins, Panthers, Marlins, or......Canes football. If the product is sub-par, only the diehards show up. This is not Chicago, where fans will sell out Wrigley on a Friday afternoon even when the Cubs are terrible. South Florida fans just don't like to show up for losing teams. It's that simple.

1) It was not just the Stanton Contract......Marlins were so screwed by Loria who got involved with W-Chen Contract who is still owed $10, $20 and $22 Million over the next 3 years. And the Prado Contract who is owed $13.5 and $15 million over the next 2 years. Along with the $29 million owed next year for Volquez, Ziegler and Tazawa that is $52.5 in 2018 and $35 million in 2019 wasted for minimal/easily cheaply replaced production. For this team those are all albatrosses and you can argue that Loria who always knew he was selling after the All Star game did that on purpose to ***** the team and fans.

2) Baseball has done nothing but continually shot itself in the foot down here since its inception.

Marlins drew $3+ million for the inaugural season in 1993....Was still averaging almost 33k a game in 1994...
-Then baseball went on strike/lockout and there was no World Series (people forget how much that hurt attendance for the entire sport for a long time)
-1997 comes, Huizenga buys a world series through Free Agents.....Then immediately sells off team. Giving fans no chance to enjoy the team.
-1999 MLB throws a Temper Tantrum and pulls the All Star game from South Florida, because tax payers refuse to build them a new stadium
-2003 a magical season, from 10 under to WS champions out of nowhere....Then in 2004 sell off begins. Pudge and D.Lee gone

Baseball has made any commitment to actually building any sustained goodwill in the community.

3) Tired of the BS Miami is not a sports town argument. Pittsburgh is considered one of the great sports towns. Look at Pirates attendance after Bonds walked in 1994 on for the next 20 years. Not very different. Very few teams with sustained crap (like the Marlins 3 good years in 24 year history) draw well.

Jeter isnt the bad guy here its the previous people are to blame look at all the bad deals that they made.
He cleared alot of money for the Marlins and he wants to get the farm system right he will do goo d things for them for sure just wait.
This guy gets it. Loria gave Stanton that unsustainable contract knowing full well that he was going to stick the next owner with the tab. If you're the Marlins you can't allocate 25% of your payroll to one guy and expect to field a competitive team. Jeter did the right thing by getting that contract off the books.

I don't think any sensible Marlins fan thought that the team could afford Stanton after hemorrhaging money for years. Most accepted that he was going to be traded. The problem is, they basically got nothing for the reigning NL MVP AND gave up $30,000,000 on top of that to move him. They're going to move Starlin Castro as well and those two prospects are throw away pieces. Maybe they don't get Gleybar Torres but you **** well better get Chance Adams and/or Justus Sheffield. Total incompetence by Jeter and company. They're not gonna make any money as owners and they are already broke, hence them begging for additional investors. The purchase of the Marlins by the broke and incompetent Jeter group should have never been allowed by MLB.

Ozuna to Cardinals is picking up serious steam. Will probably happen within the next few days. Also trying to trade Tazawa (no problem with that).

If you're gonna blow up the team (which Jeter decided to do by trading Stanton and Gordon) then you better be 100% committed to it. That means trying to move Ozuna, Yelich, the recently acquired Starlin Castro, etc. We'll see what happens.

You are right. Many, like NYC, LA, Vegas, SF, etc. have more and better!

Announced that already with the Stanton deal
