Official Spring PractiSe #9: Saturday, April 1

Not so fast my friend....

The number of offensive plays your opponent gets is 100%...

"game clock given back to opposing O because your O can't stay on the field" + "opposing O sustained drives because your D can't get them off the field" = opposing O play oopportunity

am I off on this??
If the D gets stops, none of that matters. I don’t think it’s the offenses job to mask a defense that can’t do it’s job. Golden was big on that. He’d get a small lead and then milk the clock to protect his terrible defense that would inevitably give that lead up.

I believe we just have a different philosophy here.

In my view, today's CFB rule sets are so slanted against the D, a major component in stopping your opponents O is by keeping your O on the field and the ball away from them. Miami's years of 3-out futility has guaranteed poor records that we have seen because the D (weak, mid, or elite) is put into an impossible position game after game.

Agree they need to add another war daddy. Greatest need on the defense. I think they should add a second DT (fourth if you count Dean and Gore).

7 DT is not unheard of, 8 if you count Lichtenstein. Gore is not popping, he was probably a miss. Only Taylor has the upside to put fear into opposing QBs and he’s been way too inconsistent. We need bigger, burstier and overall better.

First, we need to add “a” war daddy. We haven’t have a war daddy manning the middle in quite some time. Norton, McIntosh, & Willis was the last time we had true DTs manning the middle.

Gore may be a miss; also could be taking high reps due to low #'s at the position. Tough going for an undersized guy?

I think that take is a depth/sub-package take.

In 3v3, Gore got some reps against the 1st team OL (Mauigoa and Cooper) and the poor guy got folded pretty bad by Cooper.

Next time around it was Cohen and Lee. Same result. Overmatched big time.

I can understand the second one, it’s two future NFL guys, but he should be able to at least battle Cooper who’s a pup.

Would you say OL is ahead of DL at this point?

Isn't Cooper supposed to be a beast in training??

What about Deen - anything there or another body that won’t really help?

The thing is, we had an offensive scheme that completely revolved around putting the offense in third and short situations last year. Everything was designed to make it easier to convert first downs. The problem is, they prioritized getting into third and three instead of actually scoring points. It’s really hard at the college level to execute consistently on long drives. It’s a great luxury to be able to use the whole clock while converting third down after third down over the entire length of the field but even the best teams struggle to do that. You have to create explosive plays if you want to score points. I’d rather a coach sacrifice a few plays for no or minimal game to set up a 50 yarder than a coach try to get 4 yards at a time.
Not only that, but you have to be super disciplined with very few penalties. Whereas we're usually one of the most penalized teams in the country. One stupid offsides and your whole plan goes down the drain.

Tough to hear so far but could just be used to the lower level of. Comp and just needs to adjust

Dàmn but it happens some guys just max out in hs
You're right. I've even gotten stud kids out of middle school that did amazing their first year with us as ninth graders then that's it. They don't grow at all and get passed by. That's why I always used to try to meet all the parents early on, not only to meet them, but also to check out those genetics. Got fooled once though cuz the kid was adopted 😉

To be able to successfully move the ball 70-80 yards getting 5 yards at a time, you have to be meticulous with execution. You can’t commit penalties or take any kind of negative play because your offense is just not built to pick up big gains on a single play. There’s a reason why so many college teams play a “bend but don’t break” style of defense. If they don’t give up a big play, most offenses will eventually shoot them selves in the foot on a long drive.
