Spring practice observations at the midpoint

Here is the write up from last year's camp. It only focused on the incoming class. Greentree practices are only worth so much, but I'd say this was pretty accurate in predicting how the players would perform in year one. Note that this came at a time when some dummies in the media were saying Heaps was a shoo-in to start.

By the way, I'm not saying we will be good. I have serious reservations about OL and coaching. I do think we will win more than 6 games if Kaaya is healthy because he is that good.

Is McDermott out healthy

I feel like the OL is the strongest unit talent wise, experience not so much
 
I agree with this. Observasions from last spring can be summed up like this. Brad Kaaya wasn't here yet. With a full year under his belt he very well could lead us to a lot of wins. There's a reason QBs almost always sit their first year. The fact Kaaya did as well as he did, getting here in the fall, gives me a lot of hope.

There is talent on this roster, and we have the best QB we have had in many, many years. We all love Dorsey, but Brad Kaaya is the best pro prospect we've had at the position in 20+ years. We forgot what it was like to have a top notch prospect at the position. Heck, many fans weren't even ALIVE the last time we had a QB that had real NFL potential. Kaaya is that guy, and when you have that guy anything is possible.

Just for fun... Who was the last QB we had taken in the first round of the draft, and what was the year?

Problem seems to be depth at all positions except maybe WR. Couldn't help but notice your indirect poke at Golden and his OL ***** ups with the players you mentioned. Unfortunately any good news is always marred by another example of Golden's ineptitude. The OL recruiting mistakes will be our and Kayaa's undoing since you can't expect freshmen to be physically and mentally capable to handle top competition. We as a team haven't been able so far under Golden's guidance.

So how many more games do you think Kaaya can win for Miami in 2015, given UM's 2015 season. I think Miami wins 10 games including making it to the ACCCG.

He didn't have his head in the playbook during his freshman year either. He admitted to it.

Coach Soldinger used to give Carter a lot of **** at The Ridge. Been on record saying Jamal needs to focus more. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane applies here. One of the most physical and athletically impressive players on the team but he plays so undisciplined and he doesn't learn to wrap up the ball carrier.

If he could tap into his potential, we wouldn't even be discussing who would be the starting safety next to Deon.

I'm very dissapointed in him, especially after what my thoughts were when I saw him at Southridge and what I felt would be a Miami Caliber pairing at safety in the future could be like with Deon and Jamal.

I felt he was raw coming in, but he had the tools to succeed. Even though I felt he needed a redshirt year and they ended up burning it. Last seaosn was his first real year of getting his feet wet.

It's year 3 though and the clocks ticking and he's still going on with these issues. He has to stop relying on his physical and athletic talents and learn more of the mental and technique to the game.


I had him penciled in as the starter opposite Deon for going into this season and my reasoning why was cause I felt that he would correct the simple mistakes. Still got a while to go till opening game though. Let's see.

Thanks for that link. It certainly provides perspective.

I think we're making too much of Kaaya's abilities. I don't believe he had one moment, last season, where he carried the team, overcame the shortcomings of the D, and stole us a win. He shows me no sign of the gunslinger mentality that can overcome great competition. Even Morris had that, but not the accuracy.

It's not even the players. It's the CORCHING that plans not to lose, that neuters initiative and aggression, that's bogged down by sloganeering.
 
Golden has a pattern of Praising incoming Freshman (J. Johnson), as a tool to motivate the older players...

Knowing this staff, Artie Burns will start at Safety with Carter as a backup, before letting a freshman (Johnson) Start at Safety, with Howard and Corn at CB

This actually wouldn't surprise me either.

If Carter still can't correct his issues in tackling form and being more disciplined. He will be a liability.

Crawford I feel is a step too slow for safety and could potentially be a liability like we saw this past season.


While I like Jaquan a lot and have always had high praise for him. I'm not too sure if he will start right away. My feelings on that. That he would start by his sophomore year or maybe some time in the end of his freshman year if someone is not playing up to par.



Only issue with what you said. We would be down a corner. We would have to rotate Artie back and forth.



IMO the keys to the secondary.

Stay healthy. Tracy needs to rebound. Artie needs to take that next step. Carter needs to become consistent. And Jaquan must be ready for a lot of snaps come fall.

If Carter could become consistent and correct the little mistakes. It would help us a lot actually. It's asking a lot to have Jaquan play right away. I would prefer to groom him into a starting role progressively.
 
Encouraging thoughts on defense but I'm not gonna buy into the hype again this year untile scheme changes we will struggle
 
Our LB and DB depth I'm mainly scared about.

I had discussed this with Shaqs dad but any LB who comes in 2016 class has a chance to get into the two deep.

Same goes for DB.



Two guys im excited to see how they progress are Owens and Young at LB. Think those two could be dangerous down the line.
 
the d-line looks good i think the new coach got alot to do with that, Gray needs to pick it up we need him he started the spring off good but fell off a little Walton is good but i don't want to have to depend on a freshmen rb

We are on the same page here. Jamal would be the biggest disappointment in his class if he doesn't pan out. Even bigger then Stacey. Seems like the light has come on for his crew...Standish, Artie, and Stacey. They know it's money time. Hope Jamal doesn't get left behind because he has as much talent as all of them.

@ Geo: How much of Carter's development (or lack thereof) do you think is due to J-Rock and how much of it is due to the scheme and lack of leadership from the secondary coach?
