Some thoughts on the Louisville loss

i played football from 7 yo through college. I watched my dad coach high level football
all my life His playbook always evolved week-over-week throughout the season. He was always adding to it, and building counter action off perceived tendencies, wrinkles to something he already showed. And he always had an “Ace card” up his sleeve, a new play implemented, especially for big games. I think its also telling we have had a handful of players with break away speed we cant seem
to find value in. Brashard, Chris Johnson, and now Lyle have nooo place on our offense, but all have home run speed. This is high negligence as an OC, that he cant find a role for elite speed out the backfield, or with opportunities from the slot. Coaches kill for those chess pieces. Whatever. SMU is the whole season…and im real worried about that matchup- not talent wise - not body types - but the cerebral game of football. The x and o’s, the game
plan, the ability to adapt. I think Heatherman is a great DC, but even he had his corners play off when we ALL KNEW the quick game was the plan. 😮‍💨 But Dawson, for some reason, i NEVER see a play we run and go “ohhhh sh*t!!”….he never brings you to your feet with creativity. The most i saw this year was a basic jetsweep to Malichi (which worked 🤦🏻‍♂️)…but he has no idea how to put DB and persimeter players in conflict in space and have to make a tackle in open field. Instead, we run into 9-10 bodies between our offensive line and the defenders ….frustrating
This is Mirabal and Mario’s offense

When Louisville's best RB fumbled he got benched in one of the most critical moments of the game. I have yet to see any sort of repercussions for a player that gets a personal foul call or stupid penalty. These kids need to sit. I don't care if it's Cici or Bain. You do something stupid you're sitting out that drive. And if it hurts the team because you're out that's on you.
Fake tough guy skit. We saw it last year with George countless times. Mario preaches accountability, yet doesn’t practice what he preaches.

Obviously we don’t want to chance it. Nobody wants to lose, ever. I’m just trying to say people have absurd amnesia and it’s baffling. An 11-1 miami on a 6 game winning streak with its only loss to what will almost certainly be a 9, maybe 10 win Louisville team by 3 points, and wins over USF, ND, SMU, UiF (who knows what they do the rest of the year), Pitt, and FSU before they fell apart is maybe not even top 12? Has anyone ever followed this sport before?
Yes. That’s the problem.
The committee has shown they will “adapt” their standards to whatever narrative fits their desired end. The only way Miami gets in if they don’t make the ACCG is if the committee cuts out a BIG or SEC slot. Let’s see how the AP poll rolls over the next couple of weeks….
We need a few SEC teams to rack up additional losses. It’s already set up that they have the best “strength of schedule”

I think it could also happen that the runner up is in a dog fight for a spot. Especially if it is a 2 loss team going against a two loss SEC or BIG team.

Just my opinion. There have been no guarantees the past two years and no real precedent

We’re good enough talent-wise to have an undefeated regular season this year. We’ll lose more games if they keep running into the middle like this. I saw people saying that mirabal calls the runs? I would imagine that Dawson calls the plays but the blocking scheme is mirabal. Who is it on - Mario, mirabal or Dawson?
This $h!t is about play calling and maybe they are not confident the players can execute certain plays. They were running some whams earlier and we saw Lofton getting blown up or blocking the wrong player. They also ran some outside runs v FSU. It seems to me they got puzzified and decided just run the players that are risked aversed but also easier to defend by the opps because they are really predictable. They have to grow some balls. We can blame the players but most teams can defend plays if they know whats coming.

After we forced the fumble, the plays they scored on the defense did not expect.

Bro (DMoney) I hear you but our staff didn’t adjust at half to what Brohm was doing. Our offense is so predictable. I’m starting to get vibes of last year when our opponents figured out our defensive scheme. We just can’t out athlete every one like we did in the early 2000’s. Sometimes we need a coach and not a CEO!
Don't care what defensive scheme you run, you can't have 5 yard dink passes turn into, touchdowns, because you can't tackle. If the QB is getting the ball out quick, why are your corners 8 yards off, and bailing. The other question if the ball is coming out quick, why bother blitzing, and leaving openings down field. If we spent the open weeks, working on tackling, problem resolve. One stat that's scary, 90% of yards by Brown, and Bell, came after contact.

I'm not demoralized, but I'm anxious.

All of us would've signed up for 5-1 and sweeping our rivals. This is modern college football. I didn't have Louisville as the loss - their OL looked miserable on tape - but maybe we should've seen it coming. Mario's Oregon teams routinely dropped these games, and this was his fifth loss as a double-digit favorite (tying him with Kalen DeBoer and Hugh Freeze). Either way, we enter the second half of the season as a Top 10 team.

The reason I'm anxious is the calendar. This is the stretch where we always collapse. Another loss would be devastating. We thought for a minute it might be easy, and now we're back to sniffing glue.

Our culture is about to get a stress test. Miami will be favorites in every game. The team is relatively healthy. If they stay on point and together, this will be a very successful season. But they need to deal with adversity for the first time in a while.

The first three drives set the tone for this game. We didn't do a good job of handling the bye/game/bye stretch, and it showed early. We couldn’t tackle, the team looked flat, and there was no juice in the building. On Louisville's first play, their RT and Jaleel Skinner execute a textbook double-team on Rueben Bain to pop Isaac Brown. Brohm calls a beautiful drive from there and Louisville scores a short TD.

We get the ball, Francis Mauigoa commits an 15-yard unsportsmanlike, and the drive is dead on arrival. We didn't run once because of down and distance. Three and out.

Louisville gets the ball at the Miami 46 after a good return. Brohm calls three papercuts for a first down, and then Chris Bell takes a crosser through the heart of our defense for six.

From that point, Louisville controlled the game. Brohm is the real deal and his team played hard. Miller Moss, who can be erratic, was decisive with a quick passing game that neutralized our pass rush (2.32 seconds before pass). I underrated Louisville's defense- they have good athletes who made some incredible plays to capitalize on our mistakes. They deserved to win.

There were lot of reasons for the loss, but two stand out as obvious. We can't win with four interceptions. It took me back to 2023 because there wasn't even pressure. Just teams playing pass and reading our QB. We spent a lot time this off-season discussing Cam's failure to checkdown to Arroyo against GT, but Carson Beck made a similar mistake with Alex Bauman on the first INT. Beck needs to take the easy money when it's there. That's his game.

Beck's response will be the story of the season. The media is waiting for him to fold and lose the locker room, as evidenced by Danny Kannell's tweet. We all have have TVD PTSD as Miami fans. I think Beck is a different player, with more winning experience and a tighter relationship with his team. But he'll need to prove it.

The other story is the nine penalties. We’re 130th in penalties per game after finishing 98th last year. It’s a consistent problem that causes us to play below our talent level.

A lot of the focus will be on the running game. I don’t expect a wholesale philosophy change after years of success, but I do think you’ll see more outside runs going forward. We’re only averaging 80 yards over the past two games. That’s unacceptable, even if teams are scheming to take away the run.

But I thought the biggest issue with the running game was the penalties. Our whole philosophy is based on controlling down and distance, and we were always behind the sticks because of unforced errors. We only had 18 total rushing attempts in a close low-scoring game. Louisville controlled the pace with their quick passing, and they ran better than they have all season. It felt like every time Heatherman went to a different pressure look, Brohm called an Isaac Brown run right into the soft spot of the front.

Miami's offensive line played their worst game of the season. While pass blocking was mostly fine, Matt McCoy got beat clean on a crucial fourth down and caused Beck’s third INT. With good protection, Beck finds Elija Lofton wide open in the flat.

Three players are still dragging on the offense. Lofton has regressed as a blocker and still looks lumbering in the passing game, while also making mental mistakes. Jordan Lyle is bouncing around and struggling to fit the run scheme. Jojo Trader only played one play.

There’s reason the staff is force-feeding Lyle/Lofton and pushing JoJo- they’ve seen their impact ability in practice. But for a variety of reasons, it’s not translating to production. The good news is it’s a long season. But it’s not forever, and we need to see signs of life soon.

Malachi Toney has been consistently performing like one of the best playmakers in America. His physicality is the revelation to me- he's stiff-arming and running over older players like nothing. Him and CJ Daniels are a playoff-caliber duo, but they need help.

The other star receiver on the field was Bell. I called him the best draft-eligible receiver earlier in the week, and that might’ve been selling him short. He’s playing like the next best receiver in America after Jeremiah Smith. Unreal horsepower.

From a playcalling standpoint, two things stuck out to my untrained eyes- we should have played with more urgency and tempo down in the 4th, and we got too screen-happy in the 3rd. Even in a bad game, we need to trust our veteran QB to make decisions with good pass protection.

Random personnel note- we played both Booker Pickett and Herbert Scroggins with Akheem Mesidor banged up. I wonder if we see them (and Marquise Lightfoot) more against Stanford.

I saved this one for last, because it’s not an excuse. But the atmosphere was terrible to start the game. Some of it was traffic and people getting off work. That’s not a fan issue. But the student section was half full and taking selfies. Let’s be better.

The good news is that we don’t have to wait through another bye. We will see how this team responds right away. Go Canes.

It's easy to say we'd all take 5-1, but that really depends on when you ask the question. Ask me in August and I'd say sure. Sounds good. Ask me on October 16th and I'd say '**** no'. I knew UL would be tough, but I wasn't ready for us to be exposed like we were. The assumptions are we have an incredibly talented roster. Now I am not so sure. I think UL had better talent in many places than Miami, and this wasn't a huge upset after all. Without the great fumble and quick score, we would have lost by a bigger margin.

Beck is Beck. I hate DK as a Miami hater/analyst, but he isn't wrong here. Beck had no business throwing anyone under the bus after his awful performance, yet as predicted by many from UGA, that is what he does. Nothing is ever his fault. In 2024 it was drops, inexperienced WR's and bad play calling. He is a selfish kid who candidly fleeced us. Miami should have looked harder at a replacement, but took the biggest name it could find, even though his arm is damaged.

I think Miami will win this weekend, but SMU on the road is going to be a huge test. I see Chris Johnson putting up nice #'s and just wonder why we couldn't have found him a bigger role in this offense. We will need to play a much cleaner game or else we will be 6-2 and out of it completely. But hopefully I am surprised and we go into Dallas and win.

If we want to utilize Lyle we need to run him off tackle and get him into space.
After Malachi's run to the ten, we pulled Brown, and bring in Lyle, when we know its going to be hand to hand contact. It looked like we were catering to Lyle, to keep him happy. How does Lyle wind up with 17 carries, and your two top RB's get like 10 carries between them.

Inexcuseable. Also why run Lyle the way you would run Fletcher and Brown with those inside runs.

Wasnt JJ the best players on the entire team that won the NT?
You are not comparing mali to JJ are you?? Also OSU was better coached and had more talent than us overall and most definitely at wr. I love mali but he will never be on JJ level respectfully. JJ is the best receiver from sfla since dre Johnson.

I hate the tom Brady Patriots but they had a versatile offense which is why they dominated a lot without having a dominate wr until Randy came. Admittedly they had gronk and Hernandez. But they utilized them well. They put RBS in the slot for mismatches. Same with the saints with Drew Brees he had some weapons here and there but no Randy moss and they were versatile

His impact is similar. And there was no qualifier about who was what. Man was making plays last year man is making plays this year, same scenario. You acting like Mali been feasting on cupcakes. Plus you saying Ohio St was more talented is even more impressive for Malachi. He balling on a less talented team in your opinion

When you have players such as Zech Poyser mentioning how they weren't prepared for what Louisville threw at them, that's a serious problem.
Not sure I agree.

There are some things you might see during a game that you did not prepare for during the week because it never showed up during film review. That’s not shocking or disturbing or uncommon. That’s the reality of football. Do you think we anticipated and practiced against a 3 QB set? Unlikely.

The real issue is how the coaches and players react to a formation or play they have not seen on film or from the practice squad. That’s an indication on how well they are coached.

After the first 2 drives, the defense played better. We did not shut them down (nobody what some on here believe), but we played better.

The spot light should be on the offense, not the defense. The offense, and more specifically the running game, significantly underperformed and it wasn’t because some defensive savant coordinator gave them exotic looks. Mario, Dawson, and Mirabel need to be held accountability for that performance.

How come other teams seem to come to the table with new innovative ways to attack us based on film and our offense just seems to rely on what worked in the past? No adjustments at times. We sprinkle in a few plays here and there that we're set up weeks prior and/or a new wrinkle here in there. But we love our base offense.

It’s not that we lost it’s how/why we lost that has many assuming the worst. Same lack of preparation and inability (or unwillingness) to properly utilize our players. We have all seen this before
To be fair, no matter how a team loses (especially to an inferior opponent) we would be saying the same thing. “It’s how we lost” would apply to every loss.

That being said, your point is taken. We do not do a good job of maximizing our talent, especially offensively. This is becoming a one man show with Malachi. I think our scheme is the primary reason.

Were we though? I am honestly asking too.

I think it was definitely more true once we started 5-0 but I didn't think we were talented enough to go undefeated before the season.

There are areas that have exceeded expectations (Bain, Toney, safety, OL before Friday, maybe CJ Daniels), but there are also plenty of areas that we knew would be iffy (tight end, linebacker, DL depth, true home run hitters) and are iffy.

I think it is easy to say that we are much deeper than Louisville, but they have a first-round skill position player, we do not and while they don't have that on defense, they do have dudes like Clev Lubin and Rene Konga who are grown men in their 5th year of college football.

They obviously aren't more talented than Bain and maybe Mesidor but are Justin Scott or Armondo Blount more "talented" than those guys? Maybe physically, but they definitely aren't better football players...at least right now.

I don't think Louisville's talent is necessarily why we lost this game, so I get it, but I think is a flawed roster in a few ways (no one has ZERO flaws).
I agree overall. I thought we were an 8-4 team before the season with losses to ND and UF. After we started 5-0, yeah, I’d say we have the talent to go 11-0. Of course there’s flaws but we went undefeated through what I considered to be the toughest part of the schedule.

How does the entire defense not know lville only needed 2 yards for a first down on the fake. Like mindboggling stupidity. Also we’re done w the penalties. This team is low iq and undisciplined. The ol is the least disciplined unit on the team and that’s supposed to be Mario’s bread and butter
