Some standouts from today's scrimmage

Imagine the best DB group one year after Cam left with the worst DB group. Of course itd happen! Its Miami
Not DB room. There’s depth issues at safety, idk if anyone outside of Poyser is an NFL player, CB though? Brantley has been a very very good starter in B10 last two seasons… if he is struggling to crack our top 3 or 4? Yeah we up

And why would he? This is comical.

Last year it made sense. You see that Rush Expl% vs Pass Expl%. If our pass game isn't going to be as explosive this year (lets be real there is very little shot that wont see a pretty decent regression) we NEED to offset that with the run game becoming more explosive. Simple as that. I mean obviously all this **** works together. If you have an elite qb playing at an elite level it makes it easier to run. And if your main objective when you do run is just ensuring your picking up 5 with no care about explosive plays because you Know you have that elite Qb and that giving him those 3rd and 4th and shorts that that consistently positive run game provides will lead to far better results...well it's a flywheel. When it's working, that's excellent. And it led to our best offense like ever. But anyone thinking that is just automatically going to continue being as successful this year is crazy. What if defenses don't fear our Pass game as much due to Ward being the #1 pick vs Beck maybe being a fringe 1st at best, and our Wrs being significantly less experienced/worse. I mean MAYBE it doesn't regress too much. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I'd 100% say we should all want a more explosive run game with the goal of it opening up the pass this season (so the opposite of last season). I mean yeah our Oline should be much better but tell me what was our Run Success rate in 2022 and 2023 vs 2024? Was it ALL just the Oline being better? Did the scheme and plays significantly change or was it just our RBs being better? I can believe our RBs being better as an option, but we don't have 1 of those RBs now... So regarding OLine in 23 we had an NFL LG in Cohen and C in Matt Lee, and the LT, RG, and RT were the same as 24. Obviously those 3 were a year more experienced and developed, and I'd expect Cooper and Mauigoa to be even further developed and be better this season... but I really don't see all that MAJOR of a leap in OL quality from 23 to 24 to 25 tbh...

Natural playmaker. Brings the right energy and experience to the room. The challenge for him is that he’s competing against four guys who are prototypical corners in terms of size and speed.

Is he in the slot or playing outside?

Who is running second nickle behind K.Scott?

That's the trade off you make for consistency and reducing negatives. It's very difficult to have both, simultaneously

Some coaches prefer the run games where you go: 4, 0, 2, 15, 4, 0, -1, 28, 6, 3

Mario seems to prefer the run game where you go: 2, 9, 3, 12, 5, 8, 4, 4, 7, 6

One gives you explosivity and allows you to change the game. The other gives you consistency and let's you control the game

Our coach is who he is. Nothing about him says that he would trade the opportunity for more big plays in the run at the expense of a higher "stuff rate"
But as or more often than not this type of Run game that we implement can get closer to: 2, 4, 4, 3, 6, 1, 5, 0, 6. Obviously if you make the gains sufficiently high enough Every attempt, that's going to be better lol. Is that going to be reality though WITHOUT the threat of Cam Ward at Qb? If you were a defense playing us last year were your going to load the box to stop the run, or prioritize stopping Cam Ward, Restrepo, Arroyo, George, Horton, and Brown?... Compared to this season with Beck, Lofton, and whoever our top 4 WRs end up being?... Are defenses going to commit more or less to stopping the run this season? I'll just go ahead and guarantee more right now.

And the reality also is honestly that the SUCCESS RATE is more important than the exact average. Success rate on 1st is gaining 40-50% of the distance required, on 2nd it's gaining 60%-70% of distance, and on 3rd and 4th its getting the 1st or TD. You want/need a high success rate regardless which strategy you wish to go with. But for our offense I think we absolutely must have a more explosive run game this season.

Excellent graphical representation. What we give up in explosive runs, we make up for in other rush consistency

You may have more 3rd and 5, 3rd and 6, but you have fewer 3rd and 10, 3rd and 12. That predictability makes for a highly efficient 3rd down team

I think that Beck's propensity for taking the safe check downs and small gains will pair very well with Mario's/Dawson's rush game philosophy. We could have a somewhat "boring", über effective offense this season that converts a lot of short third downs and controls the ball at a HIGH clip
More downs where you're just dink and dunking and 4 yards and a cloud of dusting teams offensively is a recipe for a single penalty to **** your entire drive that you can't overcome, or give the defense more opportunities at creating a turnover. The best offense would be the one that scores a TD in 1 play every drive, Not the one that needs 32 plays of picking up exactly 2.5 yards per play starting at the 20 to score every time. Obviously no offenses are actually like either those scenarios. But it illustrates the point.

I want to know as well. I'm certainly not D$ but based on the information we have I believe that Brantley is doing both. He will play inside in our "Nickel" and "Dime" packages in the more traditional sense where he is covering a or one of the slot receivers. When it comes to the Nickel position that is prevalent in modern football Keonte Scott will start there and will likely be backed up by Damari Brown who will also provide competition and depth at outside CB and possibly Safety. Does that make sense?

It would break my heart to be top three nationally in rushing yards per play. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, imagination is more important than converting third downs. This season will be a failure if we don't find creative ways to lose yardage by running outside.
Don’t worry, the last part will happen.

But if we are top 3 nationally in rushing yards per play, Beck is going to be just fine…absent coaching brain cramps.

- Josh Moore showed very good ball skills and contested-catch ability against some of our better corners.

- With full-live tackling, Keelan Marion used his strength and speed to take a short pass for a long TD.

- Armondo Blount continues to affect the quarterback.

- Carson Beck is a quick thinker with a quick arm and full control of the offense. He moved the ball consistently and made good decisions.

- Malachi Toney is earning trust from the veterans with his unique ability to separate, find space, help his quarterback and track the ball.

- Jacoby Thomas is known for his physicality, but he made an impressive break on the ball to take an INT the other way.

- The run defense won the day with stout play up front.

- Girard Pringle is our fastest tailback and impressed in full contact.
This is the exact kind of back-and-forth you want in a scrimmage right here. The last thing you wanna hear is one side dominating. This is a good sign, just gotta get JoJo healthy and producing and we’re gonna be really good.

The comments on the run game are somewhat of a concern, only because I’m hoping it’s not another case of us using “tight spilts” where we lead the nation in runs between the guards and no imagination in the run game
Can you please stop talking about the tight splits, Anyone that uses that as an excuse, knows nothing about football! We had a top five run game in the country last year, what more do you ******* want? Smh

It was Emory.
And anyone on here that this surprises, is an idiot! This kid doesn’t have it and actually it’s not even close. He’s a career back up here or maybe if he’s lucky a starter at a group of five team but I don’t even think he has that talent.

I can see that on one side. On the other, you have CWH who is a second year (could be wrong) after your big 3. Unless he is an instant sensation, I think he’ll remain in the cache till ‘26. Not a testament to my belief in his ability, more so acknowledging roster composition.
Pringle is better than Humphrey!

It also produced barely any explosive runs. Which when you have Cam Ward providing all the explosive play.... Elite QB + a consistently GOOD/Positive Run game was an excellent combo. But This year we need more explosive plays out of our Run Game....
Beck will produce just as many explosive places as Cam. Some people on here just don’t understand how good Beck is, and on top of all that, he’s a lot faster than Cam was.

They still can be a bit more creative. Or widen the splits some. As a matter of fact. Just saw a vid on IG a Canes page. Doing a countdown on how many days till ND it was 28 and they featured James Stewart. They showed a TD run he had against Colorado and I commented. We didn’t open 1 hole that big last year in our run game. We totally collapsed that line on that play. Now the numbers are there we can’t argue with them, but did our runs look like anything to write home about? Even Jordan Lyle’s 91YD TD run. He had to bounce it. GREAT VISION on that play.
Listen, I’m gonna say this respectfully, you know nothing about football in terms of controlling a football game and I know you’re gonna keep going with your agenda here but it’s stupid and it’s not realistic to how winning football is played at this level. The goal is to control the game and the way our run game functions, it controls the game. You want something different, that will never win a national championship, then go watch a different team. This is the type of run game that wins titles, don’t believe me, go watch Georgia or Alabama and all the titles they’ve won the last 10 years. It’s the exact same run game.

Actually, the safety room looks good.
