Some standouts from today's scrimmage

Yards per carry - 5th in America
Tackles for loss allowed - 3rd in America
Rushing TDs — 22nd in America (while your QB is 1.1)
20+ yard runs — 26th in America
4th down conversion % — 9th in America

All of this contributed to the best offense in school history, and one of the best of any school in the last decade.
What do these numbers look like without Martinez?

The 6th round pick who is probably a dog at this point to make the 53 in Seattle?

Not ****ting on Martinez, he was obviously a good player here, but we didn’t lose Barry Sanders. He’s a replaceable college back, especially when the 2 kids vying to do it were top 100 recruits.

I’m not sure of the exact numbers but I do know Fletcher and Lyle scored 13 TDs to Martinez’s 10, and I do know Fletcher was excellent in short yardage (as was Martinez, maybe because we have a very good offensive line).

A good program replaces kids like Damien Martinez in their sleep.

Just using his production at Miami last year. How many plays did he extend on his own.

Plenty. He was and is a good player. How many times did he get 5+ yards down the field before he was touched, as well? Is it out of the realm of possibility that a slightly smaller and certainly shiftier kid like Lyle might take those 5+ yard runways and turn them into even bigger plays than Martinez did? Is it laughable to suggest his short yard success can be replicated by a 230 pound hammer in Year 3 coming off his first healthy college off-season in Mark Fletcher?

What about in 2023 when we were 20th in YPC running the exact same offense with a true freshman Fletcher, an undersized Henry Parrish, behind a true freshman RT?

I’m not saying Dawson is perfect or I’m the biggest fan of the scheme. But you can’t argue with results. We bullied the **** out of just about everyone on our schedule last year, and it wasn’t just because we had Damien Martinez. But I’m good with watching how this year unfolds and if the running game goes in the tank and we do the same **** we’ve done for 2 years, I’ll be right here in the paint for you to come back and tell me Dawson’s a clown and the absurdly efficient numbers I posted were a byproduct of Damien Martinez.

One final thought…I’ve long been “critical” of Fletcher. Not that I don’t think he’s a good player, but IMO he’s not the 1A on a national championship contending team. That’s mostly a topic for another thread, in this one, I’m willing to understand context, and the context is he averaged 4.9 YPC as a true freshman (pretty good), he got seriously injured in the bowl game and had very little training before last season, and what did he do? Played in every game and increased the YPC to 5.4, which is pretty solid. So either he’s pretty good, or the Dawson/scheme/Mirabal/OL talent combo is pretty good, either way this year we should be straight.

The comments on the run game are somewhat of a concern, only because I’m hoping it’s not another case of us using “tight spilts” where we lead the nation in runs between the guards and no imagination in the run game
We also tend to lead the nation in yards in the A & B gaps.

The juxtaposition with our air raid passing game was the nations most potent offense.

The OL is not the place to criticize Cristobal.

Well I really hope this is the new 3 headed monster. This OL should be the best we've seen in decades.

It also produced barely any explosive runs. Which when you have Cam Ward providing all the explosive play.... Elite QB + a consistently GOOD/Positive Run game was an excellent combo. But This year we need more explosive plays out of our Run Game....

That's the trade off you make for consistency and reducing negatives. It's very difficult to have both, simultaneously

Some coaches prefer the run games where you go: 4, 0, 2, 15, 4, 0, -1, 28, 6, 3

Mario seems to prefer the run game where you go: 2, 9, 3, 12, 5, 8, 4, 4, 7, 6

One gives you explosivity and allows you to change the game. The other gives you consistency and let's you control the game

Our coach is who he is. Nothing about him says that he would trade the opportunity for more big plays in the run at the expense of a higher "stuff rate"

They still can be a bit more creative. Or widen the splits some. As a matter of fact. Just saw a vid on IG a Canes page. Doing a countdown on how many days till ND it was 28 and they featured James Stewart. They showed a TD run he had against Colorado and I commented. We didn’t open 1 hole that big last year in our run game. We totally collapsed that line on that play. Now the numbers are there we can’t argue with them, but did our runs look like anything to write home about? Even Jordan Lyle’s 91YD TD run. He had to bounce it. GREAT VISION on that play.

And why would he? This is comical.

That will 100% be the case

Im hoping Lyle does turn them into house calls. Even though Martinez gave us a couple 60+ yarders.

It would break my heart to be top three nationally in rushing yards per play. To paraphrase Albert Einstein, imagination is more important than converting third downs. This season will be a failure if we don't find creative ways to lose yardage by running outside.
Thank you for pointing out the facts. I can't see how anyone can criticize last year's offense.
