Some standouts from today's scrimmage

The 6th round pick who is probably a dog at this point to make the 53 in Seattle?

Not ****ting on Martinez, he was obviously a good player here, but we didn’t lose Barry Sanders. He’s a replaceable college back, especially when the 2 kids vying to do it were top 100 recruits.

I’m not sure of the exact numbers but I do know Fletcher and Lyle scored 13 TDs to Martinez’s 10, and I do know Fletcher was excellent in short yardage (as was Martinez, maybe because we have a very good offensive line).

A good program replaces kids like Damien Martinez in their sleep.
Why do we watch the games, see one player is way better than the others then when they leave and don’t get drafted high we just downplay them to make us feel better about what we have?

**** happens every year, we did it with shaq at lb then we saw out lb play fall off bad, did it with james & kam last year now we’re gonna do the same this year with our RBs & WRs??

Martinez a top10 tb in the country rushed for 1k yards twice then came to an entirely different scheme and still rushed for 1k AGAIN averaging 6 yards a carry and now its oh he’s a 6th rounder and we aren’t replacing barry sanders lol wtf

Did I say anything about the WRs? Or did I say Miami had an incredibly efficient running game which helped pave the way for the best offense we’ve ever seen utilizing tight splits and a large % of runs into the A-gap, and that doesn’t necessarily need to change just because we lost Damien Martinez? Who is, yes, a 6th rounder and not Barry Sanders.

I literally went out of my way to praise Martinez multiple times and acknowledge he was the best back on the team last year.

Also, don’t tell anyone this, but you know where Mark Fletcher ranked last year in EPA/rush? 39th. Ahead of bums like Omarion Hampton, Woody Marks, Isaac Brown, and Nick Singleton. Damien Martinez was 64th.

SR%, you ask? Fletcher 27th, Martinez 40th.

If you think Martinez was a top 10 back in the country, well, agree to disagree. I have to say though, the NFL agrees with me, since they selected him as RB20, and that’s just of the draft eligible kids.

He’s a fine player. And we’ll be ok.

And why would he? This is comical.

Excellent graphical representation. What we give up in explosive runs, we make up for in other rush consistency

You may have more 3rd and 5, 3rd and 6, but you have fewer 3rd and 10, 3rd and 12. That predictability makes for a highly efficient 3rd down team

I think that Beck's propensity for taking the safe check downs and small gains will pair very well with Mario's/Dawson's rush game philosophy. We could have a somewhat "boring", über effective offense this season that converts a lot of short third downs and controls the ball at a HIGH clip

This is a good take. I like our TEs and RBs to do well this season. Need to figure out who is the down field threat so we have the good fortune to run this operation in the manner you suggested.

Would love to see deep overs and big posts paired with our run game. Take advantage of speed in the slot and dare teams to give you 1v1 on our outside guys throwing a route that Beck seems to like throwing (if memory serves)

We also tend to lead the nation in yards in the A & B gaps.

The juxtaposition with our air raid passing game was the nations most potent offense.

The OL is not the place to criticize Cristobal.
Where did I criticize the OL?

At least some guys on this board can criticize me after exercising some reading comprehension - heck one guy even pulled a clip from the 40 Year Old Virgin to make fun of me and my post - now that's funny

The comments on the run game are somewhat of a concern, only because I’m hoping it’s not another case of us using “tight spilts” where we lead the nation in runs between the guards and no imagination in the run game
Dawson's run concepts are what they are (unimaginitive). They aren't going to suddenly change or improve. Our offensive brain trust for better or worse is pretty much just him.

It all comes down to personnel. Last year, we had it and wasn't too much of an issue.

Yup…Well said. And I'm a big Martinez fan.

The brevity of these “updates” are what get me excited. Not a lot of substance but not a lot of fluff.

People walk different when they know they got it.

Hope we do.

Competitive maturity was mentioned in another thread and I think that will be the biggest difference this season; Cam had it but few others did. This year we have layered experience to go with blue-chip talent and quality depth.

You didn’t but i included it because its basically the same line of thinking with our WRs.

For example last year you and others in the fanbase all said our wr room was loaded and one of the top rooms in the country, now they gone and we need to cope its oh they didn’t get drafted so they shouldn’t be hard to replace lol **** is lame and it’s basically what you’re doing here

The praise isn’t the same when you’re clearly downplaying him lol. We dont need the nfl to tell us who was better in college, thats never been the only way to judge COLLEGE players. Nfl is based off projections.

Also you can post all the numbers you want to cope, you watched the games last year and came away with this but since its the off season its just more cope and more hope

Top10-15 in the country and Round 3 or 4 projections but now he’s just a 6th rounder thats fighting for a roster spot so replacing shouldn’t be an issue lol ok

None of these guys followed your advice and entered the draft early

Treveon Henderson- 2nd round - 22 years old
RJ Harvey- 2nd round - 24 years old
Brayshul Tuten- 4th round- 22 years old
Cam Skattebo- 4th round- 23 years old
Woody Marks- 4th round- 24 years old
Jarquez Hunter- 4th round- 22 years old
I mean it was pretty generalized advice. Would be dumb to say it applies no matter the circumstances lol.
- Henderson only returned to win a championship. That decision had nothing to do with the draft. I don't think him returning changed much at all.
- Tuten only played 1 year. I mean he's probably such a good athlete and did decent enough that he probably still gets drafted, but it definitely wouldn't have been a sure thing. But I definitely wouldn't say a guy with only literally 1 yr of game film returning is "not taking the advice".
- Skattebo same thing as tuten except hes not the athlete and didn't have as good of a season either. So he HAD to return.
- Marks just wasn't all that good and probably wouldn't have been drafted I'd guess. So wouldn't say he went against the advice either. I don't think he's a good prospect regardless, and think him being taken in the 4th was a massive reach.
- Hunter is one that I'd say "didn't take the advice" out of this entire list. And I'd actually bet Hunter didn't help his draft stock at all. The only difference is he'd have been taken same and be a year younger with less wear.
- RJ Harvey I think significantly helped his stock. I definitely would have recommended for him to enter after last year (2nd year full time starter). But this is probably the Only one on this list that I think went against the general advice and it massively benefitted him.

But just in general you want to leave for Draft as early as possible. If you're not getting or expecting to get significant PT by your JR year you need to transfer.
