Smart receivers

Not trying to start anything, but I'd like to know who our dumb receivers are ?

Most of the WRs on the team are pretty intelligent young men and yes, that includes JT. Most of them outside of JT have kept their nose clean off the field as well. Pope just made the honor roll.

I dont see the correlation. Not enough to point it out at least.

Youll be hard pressed to find a dumber human being than Antonio Brown and he might be the best WR on the planet when hes on the field. Julio Jones is no Rhodes scholar either.
Which part of JT comes off as pretty intelligent? Haven't seen an ounce of that yet starting with easily the most embarrassing in NSD history please end this now for the kid's sake and everyone else's interview on espn. It was like nails on the chalkboard level please end this now you aren't helping him. I wouldn't just come on here to say that to bash him but claiming he's shown intelligence on or off the field is quite a stretch. And please god spare me the next 17 people that are going to tell me about his St Louis upbringing. I get it. He was dealt a crappy hand in life and a good bit of it may be a result of that. So are a lot of people.

Put it like this --

JT's one of those kids who probably had one of the higher SAT/ACT scores on the team. You'll come across them, especially if you've ever worked in the school system. He never had an issue with a getting a qualifying score.

His struggles have stemmed largely from lack of attendance and apathy, and it has nothing to do with his tough upbringing in St. Louis or being dealt a crappy hand. It has more to do with the fact that he pretty clearly has some undiagnosed mental issues.

Much like Perry (who also made the honor roll to many people's shock), interviews and behavior can be deceptive.

Fair enough. I brought up the St Louis thing strictly because for some unknown reason posters on here seem to excuse him for his actions with it everytime he does something else dumb when they wouldn't for other kids who probably had crappy upbringings too. Hopefully he makes the league though, because if he has to interview for a job that doesn't include his physical skills they won't give him a pass because it might be deceptive. It was beyond painful.

We tend to focus on physical tools with receivers, but in the past few years Miami's best receivers have been the smart guys. Allen Hurns, Phillip Dorsett and Braxton Berrios did everything right off the field and it translated to the field. Now, KJ Osborn and Mike Harley are the two guys we can count on.

Jeremiah Payton may be the next guy to fit in this mold.

The smartest receivers are the best actors. They may not be the fastest - or quickest - but they cleverly get their cover to bite on a fake - and find themselves open.

It's not the smartest - but the slickest. The most convincing. You get your cover man to bite on a false move - you're by yourself out there.

Antonio Brown is football smart and works like a maniac. That's why he succeeds despite average physical tools. Julio Jones has the mentality of a walk-on along with supreme physical tools, similar to Andre Johnson.

It's not about book smarts, necessarily.

Great point re Antonio Brown. No coach has ever questioned his work ethic. Ill bet that guy still works out 5-6 hrs a day even now like he still has a shot at playing in the league again. (slim chance)

Floyd Mayweather has that same workmans like mindset. Still trains like he has a fight coming up and isn't retired.

Nobody said it was just about brains. You need talent. But we rarely talk about brains at the WR position. We focus on other things.

A couple former NFL scouts have a podcast (Move the Sticks) where they were going over their misses at WR, and they noted that they tended to undervalue things like brains and toughness in their WR evaluations.

That made me look at the Hurricanes and it was clear that the guys with the best mental approach were having the most success. Hurns, Dorsett and Berrios are all exceptional in that category, and KJ Osborn is currently outplaying a depth chart full of four stars.

Patriots always have the smartest if not too three teams in the NFL per Wonderlic. I remember a story on that a few years ago.

I get what you're saying, but application of what you have in totality is what matters.

You aren't in a position though to talk about brains regarding our players. This approach that you've taken is more palatable.

KJ is a worker. Misevaluated as well. Again, totality.

So we're saying the other guys aren't smart? Yes, brains are important, but so are other things. If it was just about brains, they would draft based on a test and call it a day. Played with some dudes that were as smart as a box of rocks and the best guy on the field. This is a really ill advised thread with an immeasurable attribute. You've finally flown the coop.
NFL teams draft like **** if you haven't been paying attention. So yes the immeasurable attributes seem to be the ones everyone is trying to measure and quantify bc if you have it with the physical tools you will succeed....as stated in the OP

Sometimes I just wanna see a WR who highppints a ball and who looks for a block to help a play. ****, tackling the DB on a **** poor throw. We need more of just on the field awareness from all of our guys

Is there a reason you didn't list Ahmmon? Just a mistake or do you not consider him a "smart guy?"

He was our best when he was on the field. He seemed to have a high IQ of how to play the WR position.

Jerry Rice was a good athlete.

But he stayed in the league for a very long time because of his intelligence and work ethic.

respectfully, i don't see how KJ Osborn or Harley evidence being "smart". Mature? Yes. Focused? Yes.

And Antonio Brown does not have "average physical tools". He is perhaps the best route runner of his generation.

Reggie Wayne is a perfect example. Great player, but not physically dominant. Great hands and great routes are very, very important.

Reggie Wayne was physically dominant, 6'2", strong as a ox, leaping ability of a basketball player, also ran a 4.45 forty

Allen Hurns going undrafted was one of the biggest head scratchers I’ve ever seen.

JT4 made a super smart play against FSU when he pass interfered and broke up a sure interception. I believe that saved 3 points. I have been clamoring for a long time that we don’t have a smart football team. Earlier in the year JT had a chance to make that same play and did not. Maybe we are turning the corner in that aspect.

That's more of a learned skill than a physical talent.

At the combine, he was 5'10, 186, 4.48 with a 33 inch VJ and a very good (but not freakish) 4.18 shuttle.
