Sam Brooks

We’ll see a lot more blown assignments next year, but the extra athleticism, agility, and explosiveness will make it all worth it. I’m glad McCloud decided to come back and be the anchor. His leadership and experience will be much needed in that LB room.
Won’t look much different than shaq and pickney taking terrible angles or misdiagnosing plays On a routine basis

That's been one of the most overstated myths that Brooks wasn't back to full speed his Senior season.

He had a 100tcks 21TFL's & 16 sacks. I think people think he like sat his Senior year or something when he literally played in every game except the preseason game lol.

He had his best season of his HS career his Senior year & didn't miss any games, he was injured in October vs CC his Junior year, had surgery, recovered & played every snap of his Senior Season & was the leading tackler on our State championship Defense.

He's been fully recovered for 2 off seasons now, Idk why people keep bringing it up lol.

His ranking was lowered because he didn't go to any of the Rivals camps, people have to realize 247/Rivals rankings are all political & not merit based or based upon skill set.
**** he didn't attend no camps? These r the type of kids no one knew about back in the day.....camps have unfolded the whole recruiting landscape. I thought Brooks looked like a 5 star to me

Needs some strength and weight
Huff has missed a shìt ton of reps.

He was a late add in Fall camp last year getting in only a couple days before Week 0, which means he missed all of Spring camp, Summer workouts & Fall, was ineligible for the season as an academic redshirt & only got 5 days of Spring camp reps this year.

I've always been high on him but he's going to need time to develop & get comfortable in his role.

i heard the staff was excited about Brooks, Huff, and Joyner. Brooks and Huff they think are on a different level than what we have had.Alot of people think Zach will do good at Mike. we shall see.

Maybe so but apparently he’s gotten rave reviews on the scout team multiple times

Very talented but further away.
Brooks started one game, La Tech, and led the team in tackles. He’ll have three games against similar competition to start this year. Could be EATIN’ by mid season.

Hope TAC gets some run too. He’s a pure LB that’s played it all his life. He coupled with freaks like Huff and Brooks....sheer nastiness for three straight years.

How can you be making a negative comparison to an 8 year NFL vet?!
I think he was referring to other peoples perception. I always thought he get the attention he deserved when he was at UM. He was over shadowed by DJ Williams his early years, then Tavares Gooden and Jon Beason his later years.

Expectations internally are sky high. Some people think he’s the twitchiest, most athletic player on the team.

One best-case scenario comp would be Kenneth Murray, LB from Oklahoma. Similar physical profiles and both were edge rushers in high school:

Kenneth Murray (HS junior): 6’2, 215, 4.68 forty, 4.34 shuttle, 34.6 VJ, 42.5 PB, 115.35 SPARQ

Sam Brooks (HS sophomore): 6’2, 194, 4.62 forty, 4.20 shuttle, 36.2 VJ, 42 PB, 116.91 SPARQ

Murray had the benefit of being coached by Ruffin McNeil and Tim Kish.

Brooks has got Jonathan Patke

It’s true that happened, but they also knew what they were doing at least. And they constantly got the other players on defense into the right pre-snap positions.

If I recall correctly, Northwestern shut out their opponent in the state championship game when Brooks was a senior, and Brooks had a fumble return in the state championship game. I never understood why Brooks was a three star, but it worked out for us. I agree that Rivals can be petty when recruits don’t play that camp circuit game.

I will say that I believe that the Canes coaches are very high on Brooks. He didn’t play much his freshman season, but when he did play, all I could say was, WOW! He just stood out in terms of speed and aggression. It’s been a while since I have seen a Canes LB move so fast and strike so hard.

Playing Behind this Canes DL, the Canes LBs should eat all day. If Brooks stays healthy, this could be a very special year for him and this defense

This is what I worry about. You saw it with Shaq, McCloud and Pinckney. Shaq improved because he's Shaq, the kid is a born leader. And he didn't improve enough. Meanwhile, the other two never developed into what I expected, never took a big 3rd-year step we normally see. Joyner, Brooks and Huff seem all more naturally gifted that their predecessors. But will they develop?

I don't even give Patke credit for their recruitment, tbh. Banda was the guy that brought in Brooks IIRC. And we almost lost Huff. Manny had to keep him in the fold, made him a priority. And it was Manny who recruited Joyner. Patke is so "meh". Dude better step up bigtime this year.
