Running info on Bama.

Insider nuggets from Bama 247:

Quick update before scrimmage Saturday. Team will practice today then scrimmage in stadium tomorrow, next week they will practice on Tuesday and Thursday then ADAY on Saturday which will be the end of spring. So after today, two scrimmages and two practices and spring is over.

I will get specifics out on scrimmage tomorrow then spring recap after ADAY as things change over the last two weeks. Most is set but....

The truth... OL has the most movement. Still a lot of moving parts on first and second team. Coaches want the best five on the field and have plenty of options. For fun, you could see any of the following combos

Neal, Ekiyor, Owens, T Brown, Randolph or Neal, Ekiyor, Owens, T Brown, Cohen or Neal, Ekiyor, Owens, Cohen, T Brown or Neal, Ekiyor, Owens, Cohen or T Brown, George. Ekiyor could play RG and same would rotate. The current second team from left to right is T Brockermeyer, Kight, Dalcourt, McLaughlin, Latham. Ferguson and Bowles not far behind. Potential starters from second team would be Quick when he returns, Latham, or Tommy Brockermeyer. The truth...Owens, Ekiyor, and Neal will start!

Nobody has been able to stop Will Anderson and Chris Allen from the outside or Harris up the middle blitzing. They might be along with Moody (Or Lee or freshman) the best group ever at Alabama or at least in a long time. And our DL has 9 players that would start for most top 10 teams.

Armour -Davis and Jobe have been doing great in practice but coaches working hard on developing corner depth. See previous posts and more to come this spring and summer. We are one lock down corner away from THE TRUTH DEFENSE!

One interesting point to follow is what happens when Moore returns...That will be determined this summer in 7-7 and fall camp. Armour-Davis, Jobe, Battle, Hellams, and Branch starting now.

In spring game you will see that defense is way ahead unless 1 offense goes against 2 defense or 2 offense goes against 3 defense. Or they play cover 2 and don't blitz much. Defense is REALLY good!

Bama had a scrimmage today and here's the insider on it.

Alabama held its second of three scrimmages on Saturday afternoon -- a two-hour, game-like practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Here are nuggets from the Crimson Tide’s scrimmage:

-- The first-team defense was dominant once again. There were few, if any, changes in terms of personnel, and the pass rush was effective for the second week in a row, as both defenses combined for double-digit sacks. Needless to say, guys like Will Anderson and Christopher Allen have had good springs. The play of both secondaries was also noteworthy with Marcus Banks picking off two passes -- from both QBs -- and returning one for a score.

-- Bryce Young once again led Alabama’s first-team offense and threw three touchdowns and an interception. Tight ends Jahleel Billingsley and Cameron Latu and wide receiver Javon Baker were on the receiving end of Young’s touchdown throws. Paul Tyson, working with the twos, and running back Kyle Edwards connected on a score, and true freshman quarterback Jalen Milroe threw a touchdown to walk-on Joshua Lanier. Milroe also had some nice runs.

-- Nick Saban said that running back Roydell Williams led the team in rushing, and according to sources, he was arguably the star of scrimmage No. 2. Williams rushed for more than 100 yards and scored a touchdown with the ones. As for the other backs. Brian Robinson had a long run, while Kyle Edwards caught the touchdown from Tyson and scored on the ground.

-- Saban said left tackle Evan Neal left the scrimmage with an undisclosed injury and right guard Javion Cohen is dealing with a bone spur and did not participate. The first-team offensive line, at the end of the scrimmage, looked like this: Tommy Brockermeyer at left tackle, Tommy Brown at left guard, Chris Owens at center, Damieon George at right guard and Kendall Randolph at right tackle. Despite the injuries up front, the Tide still ran the ball well.

The second-team line struggled a good bit, but again, it was affected by injuries. Amari Kight moved back to left tackle and to his right was left guard Terrence Ferguson II, center Darrian Dalcourt, right guard Seth McLauglin and right tackle JC Latham -- two true freshmen.

-- As for special teams, placekicker Will Reichard was 5-for-5 on field goals after a perfect 2020 season through the uprights. Charlie Scott continues to be the top punter, and Saban said the second scrimmage was “probably his best day” of the spring. Ty Perine also boomed a couple of punts, but as Saban mentioned afterward, he just needs to be more consistent.

-- What’s next: UA will practice again Tuesday and Thursday before Saturday’s A-Day Game.

Bama scrimmage format:

**1 offense goes against 2 defense in scrimmage and 2 offense go against 1 defense and 3 on 3s. After game part they did situations with ones going against ones and twos going against 2s and 3s going against 3s. The situations were 8 3rd down plays, try and score from 18, try and score from 3. Then the practice ended with ones against ones (4 times) and 2s against 2s (2 times) in two minute offense down 2 points from own 20.

**The 1 defense dominated the scrimmage. 2 offense never scored on them. 1 offense only scored once when given the ball on 18. 1 defense shut down 1 offense on all four 2 minute tries. 1 defense did not let 1 offense cross the 50 in 4 tries in 2 minute offense and had over 5 sacks.

** QB info: Bryce Young led 1 offense to 3 scores on 2 defense in 6 tries. Bryce with 1 offense against 1 D in situations had TD pass to Latu when starting from 18.

Paul Tyson in 2 offense in 4 tries did not score on 1 defense. In situational plays 2 offense against 2 defense had success. Paul overall was around 50% completion for 100 plus yards.

** WR: Baker and Holden had several good catches. There are no freshman challenging first team as of now. TEs are the standout with Billingsley and Latu.

There's been a lot of talk about the TEs on their board. Seems like they will be a big part of the offense this season. Young seems to have a good connection with Latu in particular.

We had two glaring issues against Clemson:

our inability to block them at all. Literally at all.

And our self inflicted errors. Penalties. Lining up offsides. Etc

If we bring that game to bama we will get dog walked even worse

Watching that Spring Game highlight, the only player on their offense that scares me is their true freshman receiver, Hall. We have better QBs, better RBs, and better WRs except for that kid. Don't quite know what to think of their OL since that D is ridiculously good. But they were giving ground the entire highlight reel.

Again, I wouldn't go into this game ****ing my pants. We definitely have a good shot even if they are the favorites. The game will come down to can we stop their run and can we score more than 30 on them. Because they're going to try to dominate us in the trenches without the playmakers they normally have.

Springs are hard to judge as usually a lot of
Guys don’t play and/or playcalls will be a little more vanilla but we definitely can blitz them in game 1.

On offense they were missing their two best OL (Neal, Ekiyor), another in two deep (Cohen), starting Rb, best Wr, and did their starting Te even play (Billingsley), Dupree, Branch, etc. We also had the same issue missing some guys in our scrimmage including our best overall player. If anything, it tells both teams saw which newcomers/rising guys may be getting more burn than thought otherwise (us: Rambo, Smith, D. Johnson, X, Holley and them: Latu, Hall, two tr fr OT, Roydell Williams, braswell, Mckinstry) and a general sense of continuity and working on final general real game concepts before things really pick up in the fall.

Here's the recap of spring from their "inside guy" - he seems to have access to practice etc.

This will be one of NS's best defenses. Our strength will be led by our LB's, Depth at DL, and safeties. No excuses this year.

LB: Will Anderson might be player of the year, Chris Allen not far behind. Christian Harris AP all American. Moody had a great spring. We have depth for the first time with Sanders, Lee, King Kennedy, Jackson, and Lawson. True freshman Deontae Lawson is the guy to watch. He is the next star and could even start before it is over. Remember this name!!

DL: We might that have that top 10 guy but we have 9 guys that can really play: Mathis, Eboigbe, Dale, Young, Ray, Smith, Wynn, Latham, Burroughs, and Goodwine. This is Ray's year and he stepped up. Look for Smith to play a lot. Burroughs is coming on strong.

Safety and Star: Battle and DeMarco continued to impress and they are by far the best two in secondary. Branch had a solid spring. It will be a huge battle between Branch and Moore at Star. Story and Wright will be solid backups at safety and play money. Fun fact: DJ Douglas could have earned scholarship as he is a really good player that can add depth.

Corner: Jobe and Armour-Davis both had solid springs and are going into fall as the two starters. Look out for McKinstry as he could be the guy that starts by midseason. Banks had a great spring, too. Williams and Turnage will be solid backups. And nobody knows about summer enrollee yet.

QB: Young had a solid spring and was the starter from the first day. He showed why he was the number 1 player in the country. He got 90% of the first team reps all spring. His favorite receivers were the TEs (Billingsley and Latu), and WRs Baker and Holden. His roommate is Holden so they have a special bond. Young strength showed out in ADAY which is ability to extend plays and instinct. The only concern on Young is size and durability. The coaches are excited about Bryce's future throwing to NFL TEs and future star WRs. Tyson had a solid spring and will be a very good backup this year and will be prepared. He played through a hamstring pull all spring. He finished strong as he graded really high in spring game where he converted 5 third down completions in tight coverage and had no turnovers with big rush. The coaches like that Tyson takes care of the ball, knows offense and can make every throw. Milroe had a good spring but is way behind in starting as QB. He is the best runner by far and great athlete. Milroe could play multiple positions. He had a rough first scrimmage as he was sacked 10 times but the second scrimmage he had two nice runs. He came from a running offense so it will take him awhile to get used to our offense.

OL: The coaches feel very good about a starting 5 but know they have work to do in developing second team. Neal, Ekiyor, Owens, and T Brown will start and, Randolph, Cohen, and George will battle for last spot. But, as season goes on Latham could be in the mix. As of now Randolph is the most consistent one and will play at RT or blocking TE. Seth improved a lot over spring as well as Kight. Brockermeyer and Ferguson have a long ways to go but will get there. Dalcourt is a solid center if needed. Quick has not played for the new coaches but he will be a guard to watch this fall.

WR: As I have been saying, Hall is the best of this years class. Brooks and Leary had good spring too. I wish we could have seen them in ADAY on second team. Metchie, Baker, Holden and Bolden will all play with ones. Xavier had a good spring but finished with some key drops in ADay. Jones-Bell is fastest and they are using K Robinson to get some more speed at WR in situations.

TE: Billingsley and Latu will both be in NFL. Both huge targets for Bryce this year. Look for us to play them at the same time a lot next year. Billingsley can play anywhere and he is a match up nightmare for short defenders.

RB: Brian Robinson will be the starter but others could get more carries. This backfield is loaded with Jase McClellan, Roydell, KRob, Edwards, Sanders, and our stud freshman.... Nobody really knows who is going to be the next guy. Most expect 3 to 4 backs to get 5 to 10 carries per game. One will break out after the first two games. Roydell made the biggest move over spring as he was outside looking in but he is now in the mix.

Lol Miami fans talking down to Bama

My god pass that crack pipe around
I love this program....but people have to be realistic.

Is it possible we can win? Sure.

Is it likely? No.

Posters are setting themselves up for disappointment if they think we, in any regard, have an advantage on paper. We don’t.

Be competitive, look like you belong on a national stage, make Bama take the game seriously until the very end — I’ll be content if that’s the result.

And no, you don’t go into the game thinking you have “no chance,” but let’s dispel the notion that this is a make-or-break game for the season.

The goal should be to beat UNC’s ***, win the coastal, and give Clemson a **** of a game in the ACC Championship game. I’ll consider the season a failure if we fail to accomplish those goals, not whether we upset Bama.

There's your reality check, but hey, let's play the game!

The Bama defense is going to be a nightmare. I believe our OL and offense, in general, is going to be improved this season but may not look it in that game.

Our team better have the off-season of their lives preparing for week 1 just to give us a puncher's chance. Feel like our defense can give a first-time starter at QB a tough time so hopefully, we keep it close going into the 4th quarter.

Expect a similar game as the Clemson game last year, we are overmatched.

I trust we can scheme well against them because of our coaching upgrades and the Shoop factor. Just don't know if we have the horses. if we avoid self-inflicted mistakes and play sound we can hang around but pretty much can chalk this as a loss being realistic.

It's the best chance we've had in the last 18 years. Make the most of it.

Say, what was that quote on the Schnellenberger shirts at the spring game?
