Rumor: Huff to Striker?

He’s certainly not a Mike and he played safety at STA. Considering many of our strikers are safety converts, this is probably what he’s better suited for.

My only issue is we have a lot athletic guys at striker and only one can play. We need all the athleticism we can get
 
So a skinny OLB is taking reps at what is ostensibly a spot for a skinny OLB? Amazing! Just get some good fcking LBs on the field.

If they can’t find a spot for a guy like this soon, then he’ll get frustrated soon and leave. This position switch stuff is often a precursor to just that.
 
I think some of you guys are over reacting. You have to expect player shuffling with a new staff. The new coaches are obviously accessing the talent available to them and acting accordingly by shuffling players and switching them to different positions for the betterment of the team.

If there's questions and if there's any tinkering that needs to be done, this is the time of year to do it.

No real insight because there simply isn't enough of a sample size, but maybe this guy just can't get off blocks and negotiate his way through traffic to make plays in a traditional LB role. Maybe the move is an attempt to put Huff in space and let him use athleticism (a strength?) to chase plays down and cover. Move is a bit concerning because for all the hype the guy appears to be at a crossroad between achieving perceived potential and career ST'er. Certainly hope he make the impact we all hoped for, but as y'all know, there are many cases where the skill set simply doesn't translate (or isn't properly developed) at the next level.
 
He looked like he never saw the weight room when I saw him at UNC game, dude looked like a wr. This offseason was gonna be make or break for him as far as living in weight room and putting in the work..

Striker is a HYBRID position, which means, you can put a Safety or LB or (in some cases) a CB at that spot.

A Striker is a just an extra defender that you can leave on the field when you’re in Nickel coverage, as opposed to having to sub in a S in spot of LB or sub in a LB in spot of S, you can have a guy on the field who can do both things.

In the 4-2-5 Defense the Striker replaces the Sam Backer in the 4-3, so instead of having 3 traditional style LB’s (Will, Mike & Sam), you have a Mike, a Will & a HYBRID, although you can replace the Weak side backer with a Hyrbid too if you want.

Huff is a natural Sam Backer, basically the same position that Zach McCloud played his True Freshman year in 2016, but once Manny went more with the 4-2-5 base instead of the 4-3 heavy we were playing in 2016 it changed the dynamic of how they use the LB’s. So now we essentially have had an overcrowded LB room for just 2 LB spots.

Moving Huff to Striker isn’t a bad decision because he can add versatility to a versatile position, meaning he’s not a Rome Finely/Gil Frierson style STK, they were Safety Hybrids, he’s a LB STK which means he can be used in sub-packages as a Blitzer & play more heavy against the run. He’s a big LB that can move, so either drop him coverage against the flats or pin his ears back & let him help the pass rush collapsing the pocket.

He’s an athletic kid that you don’t need to bog down with overly complex reads as a traditional Backer, simplify the game for him & use his athleticism to your advantage.

This is what will make Manny’s job easier, is having kids like Huff, James Williams & Chase Smith etc & finding ways to utilize them, get’em on the field & let them make plays, we have a Defense full of kids who are multipurpose players but they’re not being put in a position to thrive because Manny & Baker (when he was here) wanted to run this hyper complex Zone Defense that made guys 2nd guess & question their every step post snap.

The more athletes you have on Defense the less you have to try to confuse your opponents with Zone Dog Blitzes, Manny’s Defenses are most effective when he can overwhelm the OL with heavy pressure upfront & speed the QB’s processing time getting the offense behind schedule. They’ll either get sacked, be forced to throw an incompletion because they didn’t have enough time to set their feet or make a bad throw that results in a turnover & the easiest way for the Defense to do that is to have as many matchup problems as you can create for the OL & the best way to create matchup nightmares for the OL is to make them have to encode who they’re gonna block when we’re bringing 6-7 man fronts pre snap.

Agreed. Seems like coaches doing whatever they can to find a spot for Huff to find the field.

And if I’m not mistaken we essentially have the 2 LBS in the field as inside backers. Not sure if that changes anything in terms of his ability to see the field but hope we can get something out of this kid.
 
Given how good our Strikers are and how wrecked our LB group is, I'd say this is a bad sign. But I like the experimentation to get the best guys out on the field.

Exactly, a lot of these ex-spurts and tubers don’t understand the fluidity of the back end of the D. They’ll be campaigning for Carter to LB like it’s some revelation when Carter played Striker/SAM several times last season.

These guys are cross trained, it’s advantageous for the individual player and the overall D. These duds make football way more complicated than it really is; you don’t need an astrophysics degree to change positions on the same side of the ball man, ****.

So a Striker with a different skill set is what you're proposing, but still likely to be in line behind Gil and Keontra for his junior (?) season. Thanks for the insight re: Striker, but what about Huff? Unless a leap is made, and to vault one of those 2 in order to carve out a role it would be necessary, still looks like most ST's for #9.

His junior season, or his freshman season? Didn't he redshirt his first year? And last year was a freebie for everyone. Who knows how many years Huff wants to attend college, but I don't think there's any concern about him wasting his eligibility at this point.
