Rumor: Huff to Striker?

I
C’mon bro, you know better than this.

We do two things that put our linebackers in no man’s land: 1. Rush our ends way up field. 2. Predictable stunting.

You don’t have to two gap to protect your linebackers. You penetrate and control your assigned gap with body position and hand usage. We were always taught on run downs to reestablish the line of scrimmage a yard into the backfield, then find the ball. Running your self past the running back on 1st and 2nd down was a big no-no.

Shooting gaps at DT is usually ok because it causes instant disruption, but he has to make the play on the ball carrier. Teams haven’t really blown us off the the ball running up the middle lately. It’s at the edge where we get gouged. If we can’t whip a team athletically, they know where to run the ball and hurt us.

Manny’s system puts a premium on instincts, but he has done a poor job recruiting high instinct players, at least upper classman wiSe

It doesn’t help we haven’t had a 1tech who can command and beat a double team in a while.

A more conventional and disciplined gap system would allow our guys to play faster post snap with much less guessing. Maybe it’s just Huff and Jennings having problems. Pinckney took the Will as a true freshman and never looked back, but they simplified the linebacker assignments to give those guys confidence. IT WORKED. Maybe that is what is needed now.
I just said basically the same thing in another thread.

Idk why Amari doesn't take Pink's role. Many have already said he should be moved to LB, but when I look at his skillset, it reminds me of a less instinctual Pink.

Amari isn't afraid of contact so if he needs to engage a pulling OL or something like that, he will. If he gets into the backfield free, he can knock someone out of the game. He has the speed and coverage abilities to cover TEs and most RBs.

It seems like a no-brainer, esp with the added depth at safety. He has been in this defense for 4 years, so moving him to LB in the spring to pick up the nuances can't hurt at all. If it doesn't look like it is going to work, then move him back to safety... he already knows the position.

If he isn't moved, and if LB play is subpar, this will be a constant CIS complaint all season long. Another situation where we all see it, but apparently the coaches don't.

Just to add my 2 cents the Iowa hawkeyes, as well as TCU run a 4-3/4-2-5 that is gap responsible every year. Iowa puts together stout defenses with 2-3 stars every year. It also seems like in 2019 was the year we went away from using a 0/1 tech to eat up blocks.
