Me and Pete are breaking down each position group, post-Portal, on the CanesInSight Daily Podcast. On this episode, @Lance Roffers joined us to talk Nickel. A transcript of our discussion is below:

Keionte Scott

DMoney: Let’s zone in on the nickel position, Lance, I’m not even sure I’m using the right terminology. I may not be. Overhang, apex, nickel, old school strongside linebacker. This position has had so many different iterations. And then you look at the traditional...

It's always amazed me when these type of so-called local journalists or media outlets try to make a point. They always have to say someone's better than Frederique to validate their opinion. Bro, in what world? Frederique has always been the best cornerback since the first time I ever watched him play as a 9-year-old. I just don't understand these people.

Great conversation

I hope Damari Brown is who so many on this board claim he is when he’s injured
That's reasonable but to be fair to Brown, he has been solid to very good when he has played. Like yourself I need to see more in terms of dependability. I hope we do see it because Brown could be a great fit at Nickel.

I will be a bit on edge if the Dylan Day we've seen so far ends up as our Nickel and relied on in critical moments.

There are a few instances he was so late to a break or play that I wondered if he had some other responsibility. If he does end up there, let's pray for a big leap in processing.

You can't prepare your way to so many of the wrinkles and nuances that happen during games. @Lance Roffers

I dunno man. I saw him try and cover a first down marker instead of a WR. All my life I’ve never seen a DB spin towards the sideline like that in coverage

But he’s a local legend and it gets people upset so I’ll just say…let’s hope everyone is working hard and can stay healthy

Fair call out. Couple of things:

  1. I'm not a journalist and have zero ambition to ever be one or somebody in that industry. If I'm ever called that, it isn't by me.
  2. I'm not local.
  3. I never said he is better than Frederique. I said he was the #1 CB on his HS team with Frederique. He was and I can prove it with game film.
Was he #1 because he was a leader for the program or reasons outside of his play? I can't say.

Did Frederique struggle in some games vs. players that Mack then was switched onto that receiver and coverage adjusted? Yes.

I say this to my kids all the time. "Me telling your sister she's smart isn't saying you aren't smart. It's not about you at all."

Same deal with Frederique here.

Frederique never in his life got beat to a point where he had to switch from guarding a receiver. I know he played with my son through his whole high school. OJ got beat once in his whole high school career in a spring game vs Saint John Bosco on a back shoulder on the 50-yard line. That was the only touchdown he had given up. The ball was underthrown because the quarterback got hit. Outside of that, he never got scored on in high school. By the way, the whole spring he did not take any reps at cornerback because he was at receiver, the number one receiver was out with a hamstring strain.

It appears we have a disagreement on our hands. No worries.

Enjoy your day.

No thoughts on Poyser as a nickle?

Or just think he's a proven commodity at safety and don't want to move?
In this system, S's are extremely important. Both sides have to drop, creep, rotate from half to post, understand when they are a COP (Contain Outside Player), when they are the fit in C, when they are a robber, and when they are C3 or C4. Among other responsibilities and rules.

We do need studs at that spot as well. I'd rather have that position with 8's & 9's and find a nickel amongst our other options that can be 8's or 9's at that spot than turn our S's from 9's to 7's.

But I understand the appeal and allure of the nickel position needing to be a stud in this system. This system needs excellent secondary players or extremely smart secondary players to function at a high level (both is, of course, ideal).
