Reason #5,824 Duke Johnson is the best

This actually was an issue at UM. I’m sure someone with more knowledge of the history of the university knows the details but as I remember it, there was a group of local citizens who wanted UM to drop the “Hurricanes” moniker after a particularly nasty storm hit Florida. I’m pretty sure it was a long *** time ago, way before the UM football program was a big deal.

Yes that was right after hurricane Andrew if I’m not mistaken. And it was a local Miami Herald writer, Linda Roberts, that said we should change the name of the program.

I can’t find the link, because that was an article written right at the infancy of the Internet. One of our super sleuths such as @Tad Footeball can verify. I know he and I have talked about this at one time or another.

I remember that one but I think there was similar situation years before that some people actually took seriously. The Roberts story was clickbait before clickbait existed.

Oh I didn’t know there was something before that. There probably was. That may have been when I was like a little kid

1992, Hurricane Andrew.
And we were a Big Deal..

Go play in Traffic..
Don’t get mad at me because you didn’t bother reading. When I said “long *** time ago” and “before the UM program was a big deal” I wasn’t talking about 1992.

Spot on. It definitely was Ol' Linda and she actually wrote that masterpiece in the direct aftermath of Andrew.

The funny thing is that it looks like the Herald has completely scrubbed it. I've tried finding it and all you can really get is access to the plethora of angry letters to the editor about it.

People still reference it now though when explaining how Canes Football actually helped get them through that time so it'll always live on in infamy no matter what efforts devoid of journalistic integrity appear to have been taken to erase it.

Honestly, you already referenced it, but it was Canes football that was a nice and positive distraction for a lot of people trying to rebuild. Not a single person I’ve ever heard of has actually complained about our name other than Linda Roberts. And if anybody was going to complain it was people that lived in S. Miami, or Kendall or Homestead or places like that, that were flattened in many cases.

I see the fins signed Mostert. Hopefully that doesnt leave Duke out, if so, hopefully we can get him in TB with Fournette still unsigned and RoJo unlikely to come back
