Ray Lewis, Is he the greatest hurricane of all time?

It's really hard for me to understand anyone who could pick anyone but Ted Hendricks as the best player ever. Everone else mentioned here has at least one other at their position you could make an argument for. He played a half a century ago and and most of us that were fans then until now would have him as the best or in their top two or three.

Hendricks is Miami's only three-time All-American. And I think he was the first Cane elected into the NFL HOF.

Ed Reed for me. Don't you guys remember third and long salivating like a St Bernard waiting for the pick or pick 6.

I've said it before... A quarterback could make the perfect read on a play and throw a great pass... Ed Reed would still jump it and take it to the house.... He is one of if not the smartest player I've ever had the joy of watching

I've seen them live including The Mad Stork. Ted was and is as crazy a Cane as any of our more modern heroes. Playmaker himself said Ted was Cane before there was Cane. You can't go wrong with any number of Canes as GOAT: Ray, Ed, pick a DT, Bennie, Playmaker ....or Ted. But consider that Ted played DE in college and then moved to outside LB in pros. Long before his time he was the Rush end of today's dream team. If he was coming out today he would go number one in draft and teams would trade for that pick like he was generational QB. Dude was the only player in NFL that Jimmy the Greek gave one point on the spread to the team he was playing on -- and that was merely based on the blocked extra point or filed goal he had in almost every big game. Before NFL all he did was make All American for three years.

Ed, ST, Blades, Marion might all be in running for greatest safety at UM. Ray has competition for MLB. Any of them could lose out to several DTs in discussion about greatest defensive player. Ted was far and away greatest DE ever, with all due respect to Stubbs. He might be the only player who is clearly the greatest at his position in the positions of great Miami players. Greatest RB, WR, TE, QB? Fight would last forever. But Ted? Only Stubbs even gets a wink. Ted was the dog of war that raising havoc is all about. If you watched him play, you understand.

You could make an argument for Irvin as the best WR. Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson are close, but aren't yet HOF and only Wayne has a SB ring. Irvin has three. He also played on the best team in the NFL, with a HOF QB, RB, and HC.

Ray Lewis has to be the best LB. Morgan won a shelf-full of college awards in 2000 but didn't have the NFL career Ray did. No one has!

I was one of like ten fans who welcomed the Canes at the airport after the loss to Tennessee in the Rocky Top Sugar Bowl. I met the team bus back in the day. I've met so many incredible players when I lived in Miami. But someone who is under the radar was Bernard Tiger Clark. He understood he had a football job to do but also understood keeping guys like me happy was important. He didn't know if I contributed a buck or ten thousand or nothing at all. He just appreciated I was there when they came home, win, or rarely, when they lost. I still think of him whenever I think about why I love the Canes.

Funny you mention Clark. I live in Los Angeles but grew up in Tampa. My mother still lives there and this weekend's storm was of keen interest to me (all's well). A friend at work also grew up in Tampa and is close to the Testaverde family. She mentioned Vinny Jr. was transferring to the University of Albany-SUNY. Bernard Clark is DC there, and close friends with Vinny Sr.

I think we all become attached or emotionally invested in the players we watched while growing up as kids. It's hard to believe that a guy like Barrow is just another name amongst greats like RayLew, Morgan, Vilma, and Beason despite finishing 7th in the Heisman voting his Senior year.

Ray, 26, Ed Reed, the Playmaker ... they were as good as it gets, and they deserve every accolade you can lay at their feet.

But the stork? He stands alone as the 'canes GOAT, and anyone who doesn't get that, just doesn't really understand.

Ray was the best defensive player and best leader in NFL history. Even in his last season, he was the difference for that Ravens team.

As far as Canes, the three guys that best represent Canes football IMO are Michael Irvin, Jerome Brown and Sean Taylor.

you know i respect the **** out of you, and I take nothing away from Ray, ST, Reed, or Irvin, or JB for that matter .... but on the field? the greatest cane of all time was hendricks. so much so, you can lock the thread on it!

Understandable. That's like me if someone threw out the name Eddie Dunn "39"or Whitey Campbell "47". They were great players but I have serious question whether they would shine today. Ted Hendricks again played here fifty years ago (**** I'm old) but if he was a senior at Hialeah today he would be on every major college must get list. By the way he was also an honor student if anyone is interested".

There is Ted Hendricks and then there is everybody else. 2nd team All-American sophomore year, 1st team All-American junior and senior years. Hendricks had over 300 tackles his 3 years. He had somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 forced turnovers and 12 fumble recoveries. Had Heisman Trophy Winner Steve Spurrier throw a fumble at his helmet because Hendricks was beating him up. That alone puts him at the top. All-NFL Decade Team in 1970s and 1980s. College football and NFL Halls of Fame. Oh yeah, and the best college defensive end wins the "Ted Hendricks Award".

Sean Taylor to me was the greatest cane. Didn't play games or talk much, he just brings it. Our defense went down hill after he left for the NFL.

right on, my brother. as i said in another post, no disrespect to the other great ones who wore the orange and green, but ted hendricks stands alone. it's like the guys who just don't understand that freddie miles was the best HS Running Back in Florida history. some people simply don't get it .... but i digress ....

Hendricks is the GOAT to me. The fact that we can argue over who is the second best speaks volumes about this program.
