Ill say what i think will help manny succeed is, he has a good understanding of overall organizational concepts being that his Father was the mayor and had to implement policies and manage people, motivate people, persuade people, you can tell manny has that political intellect about him where he does alot of forward thinking. Now is he a better headcoach than shannon, time will tell, coach shannon wasnt as bad a headcoach as the mob made him out to be, in fact he was a way better headcoach than the penn disgrace morons, the difference between shannon, the moron and diaz, the latter 2 had and have way more support than coach shannon ever had.

Let's be real, if your headcoach is making 800k a year, how much money was shannon allotted to hire assistant coaches, that's how you end up with a patrick nix. People talk about coaching trees on a regular here. So far the randy shannon coaching tree has been doing bad for themselves. Crime dog mcgriff was the d-co at ole miss, tommie robinson is the runningbacks coach at Lsu, and whipple is or was the headcoach at Umass. I do believe had the administration supported shannon more, he would've done better!

Exactly! Mr. Onion Head was HANDCUFFED by the Miami " powers that be " from the get go. In other words, Mr. Onion Head was eventually going to get chit-canned and what not. Nevertheless, Shannon WASN'T ready to be a Power 5 head coach and that was probably the main reason he was let go and told to " take a hike! " OUCH.

That said, Stoops had some innovative OCs in his day

Yea he did man. That’s what it takes to stay on top. The game is forever evolving. It’s crazy how he went from a run dominant game with AD to an innovative passing oriented attack with Bradford.

Manny is so far ahead in Shannon in every single way it ain't funny. But as someone else said just listen to him talk. Or watch his aggressive play calling on D. Shannon is a good D cord make no mistake but his style never fit Miami as it was aggressive .

But let me say Shannon was a good hire . Again as someone else said - it is what he did after he was hired that was a let down but he never went after the guys for coaching spots like Manny is.

Yep, Bobby had a solid program and wasn't afraid to change. Leach, Long, Sumlin Kevin Wilson and Reilly are a pretty strong group.

We all know they only wanted him to be a stop gap, that would keep the troops in line in the meantime!

Can we put a nail on the coffin with this argument?
He's like the Hue Jacksom of CFB head coaching.

Ok, Marvin Lewis. Willie is the Hue of CFB coaching, but still.

Randy Shannon had the verbal IQ of a newt while Manny resembles many of the high flying tech CEO’s I have met thru Y combinator in San Fran.

Stat that tells all is what was team defense ranked during the years both were dc.who showed progress which regressed.Shannon started out with a h all of fame defense but ended up a dumpster fire.Diaz inherited a dumpster fire not only put the fire out built a championship caliber defense.

I agree with your assessment of Shannon. But I don't think Diaz has demonstrated that he is innovative or the CEO type YET. I also don't see where he has adapted.

Que? He literally just invented a position based on his personnel to fix our third down defense.....to #1 in the nation.

Listen to Randy speak for 5 minutes and then listen to Diaz speak for 5 minutes and that will answer all your questions.
I remember his introduction press conference like I remember when Reagan got shot. Cane grad can’t have such poor grammar was my first thought. Struck fear in me.

Somebody explain to me how Diaz is a more attractive hire than Shannon was in 2006. What am I missing?

The similarities:

-Both Miami DCs
-Both "Miami guys" (a meaningless quality)
-Both immediately replaced a failed head coach
-Neither had any head coaching experience (let alone P5 head coaching experience)
-Neither had any other P5 HC offers when hired

The differences:

-Randy won NCs as both a player and coach at Miami, Manny did not
-Randy had a reputation for being a strong recruiter in the area, Manny does not
-Randy coached multiple first round picks at Miami, Manny has not
This site really is unbelievable

OP I believe Shannon would've succeeded if he had the money to hire a successful staff. That's the main difference now.
