Putting the “concern” on paper

As a bald dude with a beard my DC obviously had a rough couple days , get a Gillette on that dome bro.

I get annoyed with stat and PFF people when they don’t understand the momentum and feel of a football game

Not to be the “IF YOU PLAYED THE GAME YOU KNOW” clown but there’s a vibe when you have the other team on the ropes

To be fair teams like Notre Dame and FSU have good players and they fight off the ropes too so it’s not ALWAYS about just us

But the proof is in the numbers so far
Translation: Stepping hard on opponents neck & don’t let up on the gas.

I get and understand the concern. In 4 years going from a 2-4 record to now worrying about how we play when we are ahead by 2-4 TD's is a great problem to have.

The massive, inexcusable fail was getting the ball at the FSUs 43 after a failed onside kick and doing nothing. We have a kicker who can drill 55 yarders in his sleep. We can’t pick up 8 yards to ice the game? Are you f#cking kidding me? Even if we are in a shell, our vaunted OL can’t get us 8 yards on 3 tries? Not even asking for a first down, just get a little closer. Whoever was in charge of that sequence needs to be launched into the sun. If we just score 3 on one of the multiple starts in their territories, then even the later onside kicks are meaningless because a Hail Mary doesn’t tie the game or give them the lead.

So as far as our vaunted OL not being able to get 8 yards on 3 downs, the reality is that our run game is nowhere near as effective to this point compared to last year.

I know the OL can do no wrong people will jump all over this, but not only does the eye test support this, the data does as well.

We are rushing for almost 1 yard less on first downs so far this year, and overall our RBs have rushed for 563 yards on 134 carries for 4.2 YPC against our four FBS opponents. Overall, we are at 3.9 YPC against FBS opponents inlcuding all rushing attempts.

Yes, we have faced some good run defenses, but none are ranked in the top 20. Yet, we are 81st in YPC at 3.9 so far this season

There's still something to be said for, you know, winning the game. The scores in the first half count the same as those in the second.

To continue the boxing analogy - if a guy is up 99-90 after 10 rounds in a championship bout, the only way he can possibly lose is to **** around while going for the KO and catch a right to the jaw. Sure, it's "boring" to watch someone dance in circles for the last 6 minutes, and the other guy will get to say "yeah, but... you couldn't knock me out" - end of the day, you want the belt, so you gotta play smart.

If this is your takeaway from this thread then you didn’t read it or pay attention
You’re right. I should’ve been more diligent and gotten my thoughts out on the third or fourth version of this same exact thread over the last 70 hours, and not waited for the 98th one. I just wanted to play off the boxing line.

Hand up, coach, my fault.

I can’t tell if your sense of humor is just trash or you’re just retarded

Louisville:

Defense struggles and gives up 14 points right away

Miami puts together a calm cool collected drive and rights the ship to make the game 14-7

Defense immediately gets them the ball back

On the next 6 drives Louisville runs:

35 plays for 119 yards and tallies 3 points

Miami responds with:

2 interceptions, 2 punts, and 2 field goals on their 6 drives

Our defense has allowed ZERO points off of 7 turnovers this season including 4 in this game

This was the “concern” in a playing from behind situation when the defense kept giving us chances to not only get back in the game but actually take control of it

Games aren’t always won and lost because you stick up 4 fingers

@LuCane was it you I saw laying into the conservative before the half approach?

To me this area is where the game was lost

Brohm was struggling but stands to reason he would figure something out at half

This section into the 3 and out after half is where I knew we were cooked

The momentum had swung back in our favor and it could have easily gotten out of hand with the interceptions

Good on Louisvilles defense for not allowing it to swing themselves

I’m not disagreeing with you, and you make a valid point, but I’ve been thinking about this lately. Why do so many teams look great one week, and horrendous the next? Actually, it’s not even game to game anymore, it’s quarter to quarter. I watch a lot of football and it’s amazing how many teams I see who look incredible one half and a shell of themselves the next. Some of it is adjustments, sure, but I honestly think some of it has to do with the mentality of some of these 18-20 year olds now. They’re so distracted by other crap it’s hard getting them ready to play. I tell people all the time, I think one of the most frustrating things for CFB coaches these days is keeping them motivated week after week after week. I remember watching Saban during his prime tearing into players on the sideline when they were up by 45. That was my biggest fear with this team, that they still lacked that killer instinct. It’s gotten better, but still a long ways to go.

The worst thing about Becks 2nd INT wasn't even the actual Interception (as bad as it was!). Its that it'd make our already conservative coaches, even bigger lil ******* than they normally like to be... They turtled and went into a complete shell.

Like you just know when you're entire mentality is to be conservative and slow with a "lets not score too fast now" mentality, you're just ******* dumb. You know whats worse than scoring fast? Not scoring at all. Meanwhile if our QB doesn't play perfect, they just decide to basically give up. Pay no attention to the fact their their entire run gameplan is completely ineffective.

Literally when your ENTIRE philosphy can be destroyed by A) A single penalty B) A single non 4+ yard run on 1st down C) Any mistake by your Qb, D) Any lead of 10 pts.... then what your doing is bad,
