Protect College Sports Act [formerly “SCORE Act” thread]

Final paragraph of Dellenger's article today:

"Within the league, Florida and South Carolina stand as threats to any addition of other in-state programs such as FSU, Miami and Clemson. A similar situation unfolded years ago with Texas A&M. The Aggies privately objected to the SEC's pursuit of Texas."

So how did those objections work out for A&M? 😏
This is also not true. Both schools are governed by the state board and will not stand in the way of those schools rising. Quite the opposite. Especially here in florida where desantis has taken a personal role in ensuring the state institutions and miami are positioned to thrive in the new athletic landscape. See the progressive miami and fsu deal. others coming.

Things have changed today fam. It is now known Miami, FSU, and South Florida are all opposed to the bill. They are actively talking about the ACC exit for the first time. Clemson and North Carolina need to grow a spine and join. With these schools all openly lobbying against the caps on conference numbers and exit penalties they way forward is to blow all that up, which blows up the bill via losing ACC support. Am I wrong?

As far as the bill being popular, that's because the argument hasn't been made yet against it. Just today I spoke to 2 coworkers about the BIG10 and SEC controlling all the revenue and how Miami and FSU could not leave the ACC to access that revenue. The response was immediate; 'that's communism.' I don't care if you are liberal or conservative, as soon as this argument is made it changes everything. It's un-American and everyone knows it. 2 super conferences should not control a sport. We like the idea of controlling our own destiny in America.

Not even sure we need to wait until the new dem congress to kill it.

the opposition will spend the next 6 weeks hammering this bill. House not even back until 2nd week in november to even consider this bill. 25 Nos from florida aligned with CBC and others is a death sentence. Not even considering the budget, farm bill, impeachments, and other things the house will have to contend with with only 20 days to pass it. This fight is just beginning. And the Florida schools will not be alone in this fight.

Tell Ted that if he wants this passed. Have TX and OU go back to Big 12, USC, UCLA, Orgeon, Stanford, Cal back to Pac 10.

Going to a gif when you’re unable to defend your position is always a good move. Better to attempt a deflection than show you have no worthwhile response.

Not for athletic scholarships, but TrumpyCane is sure they get state level funding for academic scholarships
The point is they are not fully private, free market organizations. And of course the benefit of being considered nonprofits for charitable donations.

Just an observation of the hypocrisy of wanting their cake and eating it too. They want the profits of free enterprise while still enjoying the benefits of government involvement to the point they are relying on Uncle Sam to clean up their own mess on many fronts.

What does that have to do with anything?

There is one set allowance of cash to be distributed across all sports. So a payout to women’s soccer is money that can’t be used to pay football. Whatever subsidies a university may receive is irrelevant to this equation.

Or maybe you’re just suggesting that since universities get “free” money from the government in the form of subsidies that means they can just dish out cash left and right to everyone on every sport. If that’s what you’re suggesting I hope you realize that the inevitable result to this approach is that already out of control tuition rates will juset skyrocket.
Slow down. Just pointing out they aren't free market entities to begin with and don't have to deal with certain aspects of business other industries have to deal with.

The stupid thing is if they just removed the 2 Caps - Limiting player compensation, and limiting Conference members - This could probably pass with very strong support from everyone involved.... Players would be a little mad about the restricted movement, but that's about it....

I'm not privy to the creation of this legislation, but the conference cap at 19 is utterly stupid. Why?! Who is that for?

Even if you're the Big 10 and the SEC, there is no reason to tie yourself down like that. Who knows how the economic picture will look in 2030. You always want to, as they say, keep your options open.

Just get rid of that, and the Limiting player compensation, and you have an okay bill. But Washington being Washington loves to **** everything up.

Jim Phillips at ACC media days this summer – I only want schools that want to be here to be part of the ACC not forced to be here

Jim Phillips during protect college sports act negotiations- one of the three most active lobbyist, trying to keep the 19 cap and independence provisions to force schools to be stuck in the ACC

And some of you are apologizing for him

One argument was the need for competitive balance. They need to look at MLB if they're serious.

It was cute how we were politically correct with radakovich and allowed Clemson and fsu to fight the acc.

After this bull**** it is time to take the gloves off. Their true colors have been shown (we knew this already but now it’s on capital hill)

So Duke, Wake Forest, and UNC are cuck schools happy to be in a 2nd tier conference permanently?

Mario needs to drop 50 on Wake tonight.
That was a very unsettling article. Tobacco Road wants to imprison Miami, FSU, and Clemson. Hiring Richard Burr to lobby for the ACC without full support of all member schools says a lot. Only thing that surprises me is I would have presumed UNC to vehemently oppose any provision that would restrict its ability to move.
