President Joe is a killer

Whats happening here someone tell me because I have no clue about **** like this,
We have a little piece of land next to some of the dorms and the laboratory school. President Joe, in a very savvy move, negotiated the land in an exchange with the City of Coral Gables to enable UM to expand the university's geographic footprint. In the exchange, we will be able to have several thousand more students on campus, which we need, and the City will rezone some other buildings in a way that we want them rezoned. The City gets that land to use as a park.

It's a HUGE win for us.

Let me also add that the Coral Gables campus is currently only ~230 acres, which, considering that we have 13,000 undergrads, is pretty **** small. We had housing and parking problems when I attended in the late 90s and the population was almost half that. So being able to expand the geographic footprint is a BIG deal, but the City of Coral Gables is notoriously the biggest PITA when it comes to this stuff. In the 90s, I recall that they didn't even allow residents to have pickup trucks in their driveways. I think it took almost 10 years to get the basketball arena and wellness center approved to build. So I really cannot stress how huge this is.

It's also why those of us that are alums laugh any time the idea of an on-campus stadium gets mentioned.

In a nutshell, yes.

Me personally, I'd like to see Coral Gables allow us to construct some buildings taller than 7 stories. But that's just me (as I look out at the Braves stadium from the 14th floor).

I love everyone, particularly @Dwinstitles , and I also realize that it can be hard to see all the dominoes just before they start to fall. It has taken Miami a looooong time to get to this point. I remember the days when Coral Gables approved ZERO on-campus construction for nearly a decade, as they held us hostage over a "master plan" they would not approve over petty issues.

I posted the meme, but this deal is tantamount to Ron Swanson having a permit that says he can do whatever he wants. This gives us the leverage and leeway to build more things (soooome of which might involve aaaaathletics) and it comes at the perfect time for entering the Big 10. If we are able to become a larger school (i.e., think "USC") and we can add more academic and athletic programs, then we can become a bit stronger overall.

Oh, and maybe we'll even sell more adidas merch...

For the record, all that stuff south of Mark Light is about to become "campus". So expect some demo and new construction. Who knows, maybe that's where they'll move the new Football Ops building...

[for the record, Paul Benedict was hilarious]

this is where we were going to build the stadium. oh well,

the campus is 230 acres, so is Hard Rock. and that´s what it takes to build a stadium. there are no 230 acre parcels available in coral gables unless we use eminence front.

Or expand west across Red Road into South Miami.

I hope those Coral Gables City Council meetings regarding those project approvals are live-streamed. That will be A1 entertainment.

Residents of Coral Gables Tears thread, anyone?

The real question here:

Is it big enough to build a stadium?

Where west of Red Rd?
It's extremely controversial, for obvious reasons (cough, eminent domain, cough), and I don't necessarily think it's the "right" thing to do. However, for many years people have speculated about the possibility of UM expanding west, mostly just because once you cross Red Road, you are no longer under the jurisdiction of Coral Gables but instead in South Miami.

This map shows everything very well. The blue outline was marked from the Pacer walking app, but it works as it is almost the outline of the campus, minus the fraternity houses on San Amaro Drive and a couple other buildings on Ponce de Leon Ave.

We now have the park that we're giving to the City of Coral Gables on the east side of campus - I've marked that.

To the west is Red Road, also known as SW 57th Avenue, which is also the boundary jurisdiction between Coral Gables and South Miami. That area is mostly low-income housing (hence the controversy) and some apartment areas that are popular among students. However, one of the advantages of building in South Miami as opposed to Coral Gables, as TOC pointed out above, is that Coral Gables ordinances prevent UM from building beyond seven stories high. That is obviously another reason why we will never be able to build a football stadium in the Gables.

Zero chance a stadium gets built anywhere in that residential area west of Red Road and check the pricing of the housing in that area. That is not cheap real estate. ****** houses are expensive in that part of Miami and they’re all not ****** houses. Trust me, eminent domain will not be enforced in that area.

If only you could have met a young T.O.C. When he was advocating for UM to buy up all the cheap 3/2s near campus when they were under $200K.

There are some nice houses around there, but they’re also plenty of houses that you look at, listing for over 2 million and you scratch your head. That’s the market though. You didn’t convince them shame on you.

And by the way, **** you for that eminence front video, I’ll admit the opening riff is legit, but that ****’s been playing in my head for the last three hours. It’s an eminence front. It’s an eminence front. It’s a put on.

Agreed. It would have been much cheaper to do a few decades ago when the idea was first floated about.

Should have told Foote your idea all those times you were hanging at the old President’s mansion.

I just recently learned that when the younger generation says “I **** with you,” they mean, “I like you.”

We Gen Xers have always used the phrase to mean that we are messing with you. Like, if I say that I am ******* with you, I mean that I’m joking around with you. So now I’m wondering how many of my posts have been misconstrued over time because of this.

I learned this by watching Love Island, btw.
