Post Game Recap: TAMU

Where were the TEs? One catch, and not to UM's best TEs, Arroyo or Skinner. Happy to see the WRs so productive, but gotta get the TEs into the attack.
Arroyo was hurt due to hamstring injury which is tricky and you need to be cautious. Skinner needs to learn how to block first.

Riley is a true freshman, cant count on him just yet.

I love the nasty steak he has. He got a holding call but he also grabbed dude by his neck and folded him like a lawn chair. If you’re gonna get a penalty, send a message
100% but how are we still waiting for the other team to get penalized for holding? how is this possible our guys can't get that respect?

I didn’t have a problem with 2 of his 3 holds. First one hurt us but it wasn’t terrible and the 2nd when he folded the A$M end wasn’t a hold to me. Just completely folded him but idk what’s a hold when the arm is around the head like that bc sometimes it’s called others not
Here’s the thing about Holding penalties, they can be very costly in critical moments.

Imagine we’re on the road at Chapel Hill or Doak & we’re down by a score in the 3rd or 4th quarter, it’s 3rd & manageable, TVD hits one of the WR’s for 50yd TD, but it gets called back for holding, not it’s 3rd & long & instead of getting a first down the Defense brings the house & it’s an incomplete pass or a sack. Then we have to punt the ball & lose a possession in a critical moment that could’ve put us over the edge to win.

Point being, it was okay yesterday because we were on fire as a whole & essentially nothing was going to keep us from winning that game, but on the road in a hostile environment in scenarios & circumstances that are less favorable, holding calls can absolutely kill drives, kill momentum & even take potential points off the board.

It’s something he has to be aware of & get corrected. I understand he’s a TF, but there’s a standard that has to be upheld, because trust me if it’s not fixed now it can be a problem when it matters the most.

Another critical point in the game that shouldn’t be overlooked is the 4th and 1 attempt by A&M near our goal line where their OL jumped and forced a FG instead.

They were moving and gaining momentum and it sure felt like they’d convert the down and pick up 7 to take the lead. Instead, after the FG we still led by 1 and it felt like a small win right there to keep our momentum going. The rest speaks for itself!

My absolute favorite thing about this game is that we didn’t just try to sit in the lead and milk the clock. The running game was going nowhere and we were getting huge plays through the air so Dawson kept dialing up the passing game. DO WHAT WORKS. Last week it was pounding the run game and short pass game. This week it was unleashing the downfield passing game. Don’t be handcuffed to a certain style and be confident/comfortable enough to keep attacking instead of playing it conservative.
That’s what I liked the most about Dawson’s hire, his versatility as a play caller.

At Houston & West VA he ran a pass heavy Air Raid
At Kentucky he ran a Bro-Style slow & methodical offense that was heavy run
At Southern Miss he ran both; when he had a good QB they were throwing it all over the field with Nick Mullens, but once he went to the league he switched to a Run heavy Pistol Offense.

Even at SFA he produced multiple 3500yd passers.

Dawson is a Hal Mumme disciple from the SELA & New Mexico ST days, the man learned from The Godfather of multiplicity & vertical passing concepts. Shannon, Matt Mumme & Gary Goff all were apart of Hal’s braintrust at Southeastern Louisiana.

How's Guidry gonna 'hide' the corners this year? Tough to smoke & mirror EVERY tough opponent. After yesterday is Porter the best we've got purely from a coverage standpoint?

DP Jr is probably the cleanest in coverage, meaning he understands how to technically position himself the best to make plays on the ball.

As far as pure coverage skills, IMO it’s Davonte Brown & that’s even with his DPI’s.
It will be a matter of him adjusting his hands at the top of routes & instead of grabbing up top where the refs can see, to start using pull at the hip & back area of the WR to get better leverage while playing the ball. He’s a very physical cover Corner & uses his hands a lot, he just has to get in the right position to where they won’t notice it as much while he has his head turned & playing the ball.

IMO it will be a make or break season for Addae; if he can’t get Damari Brown & Roger Stafford up to snuff while also not recruiting at a premium level he’s gonna have to find employment elsewhere.
