Please help me understand - Mario Cristobal

You know who recruits South Florida well?

Winners.

Why doesn't this get mentioned more? I'm sure Nick Saban's a real ******* that can't recruit. However, he wins, thus he gets the best players.
And South Florida guys are notorious front runners. Not to mention if Miami had been running a good program Saban wouldn't have bothered hiring Cristobal to try and snag a couple of drifters because he wouldn't have had the chance.

Saban is playing a game almost no one could match and Cristobal was a pawn used for a couple of guys per year. Their resources allow it.

Exactly. Stoutland did a great job at Bama and Saban figured Mario couldn't f-k it up too bad while snaring a few select big timers from our back yard which is all they need. Worth the $$$ while Mario would have done squat here with Folden.

UM

My favorite for the Job is Kirby Smart, I just hope he isn't trolling us and waiting for the UGA job to open or take the South Carolina job. I think Kirby will revive this D and turn us into monsters. He was on the Dolphins and Lsu with saban and has been known as a solid recruiter, not a top 5 guy but he is solid. And let's be real, saban doesn't keep ppl just for fun like golden, lane is on his way out for more reasons than one lol.

Going to seriously need more than that. Is there anything substantive someone can offer here? This may be important.

This scares the shlt out of me. Please elaborate if you can do so.

I'm still perplexed this program is willing to flex a little financial muscle by offering $4 million to the next coach, yet is considering a dude who was fired from Florida Fcking International.

We're finally in the position where we can be competitive with financial resources and a guy who was 20 games under .500 coaching in the Sun Belt is a candidate. I hope Jimmy Johnson slaps the shlt out of Blake James and tells him to wake the fck up, this is Folden 2.0.

The fact that he hasn't addressed the 3 posts in this thread pointing out his ominous words is a bad sign.

It's been a fun few days man. Oh well.

That actually isn't what happened, Paul Dee was here, he didn't want to sit and wait and he chose to leave to the Browns with Butch.

Bringing someone who might be actually worse than Golden is exactly what this dumb administration would do.

Lu, how real is Mario as a candidate. I know it's still early but say it ain't so

I have no real idea. Rumors are rumors are rumors these days, right? Who knows what's information or disinformation. In the absence of knowing anything of substance about the guy, I'll ask questions that may be important.

There is a severe problem within the entire athletic department. They love to bite the hand that feeds them, and we have all seen it, Blake had fans ejected for chanting fire golden, (freedom of speech, check), they need to realize they make money by winning, filling the stadium and keeping the fans happy. But there are plenty of ppl in the AD office that aren't happy unless you as an alum or fan do things the way they want and donate to the exact place they want you to donate.

I wonder if ANY P5 school would take him as an OC.

No joke. Would Wake even interview him for that position?

If Saban quit tomorrow would Bama hire Cristobag to replace him? What other teams with openings are looking to hire him right now? I've only heard his name associated with UM.

Exactly. Even more telling- If Saban caught Kiffin boinking his baby girl again and finally had the stones to send Monte's boy packing, do you think he'd promote Luigi to that post even if on a temporary basis? The fact that the answer isn't a resounding yes should instantly disqualify him from consideration here.

That they are, today James Franklin had to say he wasn't interested in the job, yesterday it was Strong. Everyone gets tied to this job lol, who knows, maybe Ferman will say Gruden is an imminent hire again lol.

If people REALLY want to go back to what made Miami great, it was INNOVATION.

Schnelly bringing a pro passing game. Jimmy bringing an aggressive 4-3 defense. Erickson bringing the single-back offense.

We don't need a recruiter. We don't need someone who "understands" South Florida. We need someone who understands X's & O's and how to gameplan. People talk about Alabama's facilities and recruiting. But what gets lost in all that is Nick Saban is one of the best defensive minds of this generation. Bill ****ing Bellichick hired him to be his defensive coordinator as soon as he got a head coaching gig. Bama goes into every game with a schematic advantage defensively.

We need that. I want an elite X's & O's guy who can do more with less. THAT is how you recruit.
This. Success recruits itself

LULZ at James Franklin shyster *** saying he doesn't want the UM job. Who asked his ***?

That dude is seriously Golden plus about 100 tons of swarm. Like it's one thing to be a failure and excuse maker but Franklin is all that AND beyond greasy.

Of all the coordinators, Pruitt is the only guy that interests me. He has the coaching pedigree and is a terrific DC, even though bama plays a 3-4ish base. Very good recruiter and has been part of great staffs - i.e. He can put together a very solid staff.

I will say that I just have a hard time believing that after spending the money to buy out Golden mid-season, and after hearing that we have $3+ million to spend, and after the negative experiences we've had in hiring the last 3 coaches, and having Mario leave our staff to take one at Alabama after 6 weeks (which I think should be a significant negative factor for him), and the fact that the guy literally has the same type of record that Golden had, but without much of the buzz as an "up and comer" in the coaching ranks, that we will seriously consider him.

If the idea is that we feel we need to kick the tires on a bunch of candidates and we're going to include him, or we are thinking 5 years down the road when maybe he could be worth interviewing and we feel like we don't want to burn any bridges (which is stupid, but whatever), then no big deal. However, despite the past incompetence of our AD and BOT, I honestly can't see how Mario is a serious candidate. Even with many sports writers noting the negative aspects of the Miami job, most have acknowledged that it is at worst the 3rd best job currently open, it seems absurd that we would hire a candidate that wouldn't be 15th on most coaching lists, would be picked in front of guys like Herman, Fuente, Smart, Frost, Morris...and BUTCH. If that is where we end up, then I'd say our admin simply has no interest in being competitive nationally.

The bottom line is that dumb college football and Miami fans think all you need is a "recruiter" to win at Miami. Despite the fact that every coach who has won big here (not counting Coker) was a well-respected coach in other more important facets of the game.

Schnelly - NFL HC, Don Shula's OC
Jimmy Johnson - NFL HC
Butch Davis - Super Bowl winning DC
Dennis Erickson - NFL HC

We had four coaches in a row go to the NFL at one point. All of these guys were able to bring in great classes but none of these guys got hired to be NFL head coaches because of their ability to sit in a living room and convince a kid to come to Miami. They got hired to be NFL head coaches because they knew how to win football games.

A head coach's "recruiting" ability is pretty far down the list of things to consider. Recruiting success as a head coach is a function of a lot of things, but the most important of all of them is the ability to produce an exciting team that kids actually want to play for. We haven't had that in 12 years and a "recruiter" does not make that happen.

You need to acquire talent. Butch won because he acquired studs. Dennis Erickson won two titles with Jimmy's players but he left the program in shambles.

It comes down to evaluation and selling. The best guys can do both.
