Phil Steele national position rankings (Miami)

I personally don't pay attention to this stuff. I don't read it. The more info I get from inside the program, the more excited I get. It takes some insight to read what is true and what is coach talk. Their are some things I can take from Spring, but most of it is BS when it comes to fan info. As a fan, Spring is basically meaningless. I expect a big jump on D this season. I will keep saying, I believe in this D staff. I just have to see the run D, come ND. Counting on D. Lewis and Heatherman here. Waiting to see if Bonner can win the Mike. I am most excited about the packages with players at different spots. That's going to confuse CJ Carr Aug. 31st. I also think Toure, Bonner, Scott and Thomas(Spring portal) all have the potential to be better than originally thought. 10 Days until Camp.

Not agreeing with you on a lot of that. Clemson will be good to very good at linebacker with Sammy brown as a sophomore and they’re always solid in the back 7. Plus the addition of tom Allen. Their receiver triple threat is going to be tops in conference. Don’t think they have anyone at running back.
They obviously felt good enough to not bring in a RB. Haynes won't be back until mid season or so. They are keeping Randall at RB after the switch in the bowl game. Their is talk that Davidson could start and RB by committee. We will see game 1 at home vs LSU. I like Clemson and LSU has the roster to make the playoffs or better, really. I have Clemson as ACC Champs and runner up for the NC. The reason I don't see us as ACC Champs, unfortunately. Hope I am wrong.

Question, and you can answer (or not) any way you want: but was Guidry THAT bad last season. Was there this disconnect in terms of the coaching staff on that side of the ball

I've heard some interesting/alarming things that went on during the defensive spiral last season

I think secondary is gonna be a top 10 unit by the end of the year. 6 deep at cb with every one of them having starting experience. Scott is a true nickel. I haven't heard anything but praise for Poyer. Thomas was set to start for a top 20 SEC team and Day sounds like he's coming on. Lots of size at every position too.

I know Clemson is getting a lot of hype preseason. Rightfully so, to an extent. A lot of returning players, and that's what Dabo does extremely well at. However this is still the same team as last year.

Until Klubnik can prove to me he's an elite passer, he's not going to win a national title with his legs.

Their OL is good but ours is better. The receivers are good, and will get more praise than deserved. The DL is the best part of the entire team and they're legit. LB and secondary will be exploited early. I'm curious to see what that run game looks like, minus Cade.

Bottom line is Clemson will score with the passing game and Cade can run. Their backfield is extremely questionable. Defensively, our OL will stack up against their DL (it would be the story of the game), but I dont think their defense as a unit is nearly as good as people think. A good offense WILL score on them. We'll see if ours is good.

The most important factor for Clemson is that they normally dont shoot themselves in the foot and will play disciplined. More importantly those players will run through a brick wall for Dabo.
I never ever everrrrrr doubt Dabo.. EVER

Sammy Brown is very good, but its going to be interesting to see him without Barrett.

But you're right with Allen, he can make the entire defense 'different'.

Phil must think linebacking is at an exceptionally low ebb nationally. That is a monumentally optimistic rating for us.

I don't think our STs are rated low becauae of the return game. I think Phil believes our kicker stinks.

This roster can compete against anyone.

It’s all gonna come down to a couple of plays in a couple of big games this season.

there's no doubt in my mind that they have to be better at playing complimentary football and much of that will involve being MUCH better in the coverage and return units (where quite frankly, Miami was pretty poor)

So here is where the #canes rank in the national positional rankings according to Phil Steele:

..QB- 9, RB - 16, WR - 23, OL- 6, Dline -11, LB- 26, DB- 24, ST - 67(by far the lowest and quite frankly can't disagree in terms of the return game and coverage units we saw last season)

My only real disagreement is that the Dline is rated a bit low IMO (which would depend on a healthy '23 version of Ruben Bain) and I think the RB's could be top 15

But across the board, this is a roster that is pretty highly regarded. If Carson Beck can be what he was two seasons ago, this will elevate the whole team.Overall, this is a team that should contend for a birth in the ACC title game. Clemson is loaded this season on both sides of the ball. I expect them to be there. But Cristobal has put together a solid team, overall, regardless

People inside the program say it’s Mario’s best roster by far.

Db may be too low. Toure is key at lb. Probably haven’t had an lb like him since Dp

Clemson is getting a lot of hype because they have the most continuity returning, and they do have front line talent.

Miami has better top 44 (2 deep) than Clemson.

Clemson was boat raced last season by UGA and our QB. They lost at home to South Carolina. They lost at home by double digits to Louisville. They needed a late game heroic run by Klubnik to beat Pittsburgh with their backup QB.
Even against Texas they lost by 14, and gave up like 300 yards rushing to a Texas team that wasn't even that good running the football.

Its a big leap in projection going from one of worst run defenses in the country to a good enough run defense to be a National Title contender. Banking on a converted WR as your RB1 and a true freshman to man the backfield also is a concern.

They had the easiest ACC schedule I think I have ever seen last season, thats the reason they got to the ACC title game. Had they play @GT or @Syracuse they would have lost IMO.

Their best win was against Pitt with Pitt's backup QB. They were like 85th in run defense. They even caught a break vs. Vt with Drones and Tuten both injured.

Now they played a good first half against SMU got a lead, (Lights a little too bright early for SMU), but once SMU got their sea legs they dominated the rest of game almost coming back and winning. SMU had 458 yards of offense and 28 First downs to Clemson's 326 yards of offense and 20 first downs.

Now this years team is probably their overall best since 2021 maybe 2020.

Wirh that said Klub isnt Lawrence, Woods isnt Wilkens, their is no Sammy Watkins or Nuke Hopkins at WR.

They can be beaten. I think Miami matches up great against Clemson actually. We bullied them at the LOS last time we played.

The main issue is Clemson doesnt typically lose games they shouldnt. Typically. So they navigate a season better than we do.

They are the safer pick to
Win ACC when you factor in our history.

Our LB's are NOT a top 30 corps.

That's actually kinda funny.

I'd put them around 75 until proven otherwise.

ND might rush for 300 against our front 7.

Why are you people *****ing about the position groups on defense being too low? After the ****show we all saw last year, I’d rank them all low until proven otherwise. Last year was the worst defense we have seen probably in school history.
I feel the same way and I'm not sure it has improved much in the off season.

The LBs are complete trash and we have a bunch of leftovers in the secondary.

I’m not here to hype Klubnik, but the not elite comment gets thrown around a lot here. 3639 yards 36TD 6INT are good #’s.

We talk about Beck being elite in 23. He was 3941 yards with 24TD and 6INT.

For context, Cam was our GOAT QB last season and put up 4314 yards 39TD 7INT.
