Phil Steele calls Miami "legitimate title contender"

On SportsCenter this morning, college football analyst Phil Steele named the Canes as his "surprise team" for the season.

Steele called Miami a legitimate national title contender and says he expects them to play in the ACC title this season.

They should be in the ACC title game for sure this year, if not, this year will be a failure.

"They" meaning we?

Phil Steele is one of those espn ppl that wants to get on the band wagon early, so he can say "I told you so" BUT at the end of the day, I feel the same way!! I'm not thinking about this and that, I'm thinking strictly off the talent Miami has in the ACC.. If Miami was playing in the SEC, I wouldn't feel this way BUT in the ACC, Miami has the team it need to compete in 2017.. Our defense is why ppl think we can be a contender and I for me that's exactly why I think that.. As for offense, I honestly think if our QB can operate the offense and get the ball to the playmakers, we will be just feel..

This coaching staff is really a good bunch, everybody want to compare what CMR did at UGA HEY he's at Miami now.. All what he did back then is over, this guy is a really good coach and here at Miami he's running the ship and he can do things his way AND that's what going to be the difference..

I been waiting for someone to step up and give my Canes that title as being the SLEEPER TEAM OF 2017!! **** WHY NOT, ppl always say Defense's win championships HEY Miami has a really good defense going into this season.. **Miami has a very experience team, we are returning a lot from a year ago, the players know and understand the new system, the speed factor is there**

yes we have a question at qb, but our line should be much improved, we should have a great running game, our front 7 should be special and our defense as a whole should be able to keep us in any game we play, if perry starts then u got a dual threat qb who can do it all, just lacks experience so may cost u early , if sherrifs plays u got a guy who is very accurate has size and seems to make the right reads, If Weldon starts it means he beat out both those guys and he seems to be a combo of both perry and sherrifs, so I think will be ok at qb might lose to fsu early but by end of season should be as good as any team in country.

I never get my hopes too high. I love what Manny Diaz is doing on defense. Over under is 9 wins. We're going to need to hit the over if we want to compete for anything significant, and we need to strike while the iron's hit before someone makes Diaz an off he can't refuse.

I totally agree with him when it comes to our talent. However, Steele obviously forgot that Mark Richt does not win Big Games. Now, before all of you mark richt defenders type up your ridiculous responses, you all need to check the record. Results do not lie.

how many big games did the all the coaches who have won championships here win before the got here, Miami is just different, Jimmy Johnson at Oklahoma State didn't win **** until he got here, Dennis Erickson was garbage before he got here, if we can keep the key players home we will win again and sooner than a lot of people think, Miami is where if a good coach stays they can build a dynasty , and one for the all-time types!

What would it take for us to get all national media to drop the "of Florida" when our name emanates from their pieholes? Jesu Christo, even Ben Roethlisberger would admit that this is ridiculous to still be doing.

I agree 100%.... the Defense is championship caliber so the team is championship caliber.

This "QB question mark" is just gossip for the off season, reality is its at worst the same as it has been the last several years. We are winning the coastal this year with a freshman qb.... once we do that every game after is 50/50.

That's nonsense IMO.
The defense is championship level but until we actually see the QB in a real game we have no idea.

******* Kaaya. Say what you want about his shortcomings, but his experience and arm would've made us a legit title contender. One of the oddest early declarations ever.

Great points as what he did at Georgia is totally irrelevant to now and he did win 2 SEC titles

Think we have a projected Championship defense. The rest we'll find out soon enough.
Got some legit playmakers too. I think Njoku would have been a bigger help coming back than Kaaya, but we still have weapons.

Not sure about RB though. Walton is solid but beyond that, we have a lot of question marks.

A QB is only championship caliber when he proves it in that situation... Kaaya wouldve been an experienced veteran blah blah but him returning wouldnt have made us anymore championship caliber than we are now bc hes not a championship caliber qb based on how he has performed in big time games of a much lesser magnitude.

Im not saying Perry is championship caliber of course hes not he hasnt proved it yet either but I think he gives this team a better chance at reaching that level of potential than Kaaya.

Let's not overlook any opponent because we have a team who lost 4 games which were biggest on schedule. We lost to FSU ND VT and UNC. I will remind the players this rather reading what people think about future success. Yes, I like our roster, schedule and coaching staff, but keep head down and don't read newspapers. Play with an edge and attitude that CFL doesn't want Canes to dominate. For once let's sell out our home games to have home field advantage. I am coming from Valdosta Georgia and a season ticket holder for two seats.

What was UGa before Mark Richt?? An irrelevant fb program that he turned around after over a decade of mediocrity.

Richt won the east division 6 times, the SEC conference 2 times, and 10 bowl victories... but he doesnt win big games??

Yeah he didnt win a national title but Miami has never won the Coastal once in the weakest division on the BCS level and just won its 1st bowl game in a decade with Mark Richt....be humble.

Growth and development is a major key in success. After the midseason trio of losses we all saw the team step up to where they competed like ****. If the Canes get adequate play from the QB and back up RBs, and are blessed to avoid any major injuries, then winning the Coastal is probably automatic and the ACC title game becomes possible. Yeah, going against either FSU for a second time, the defending champs Clemson, or Jackson-led Louisville would be a major challenge. But hey, no one thought the '83 team would do what it did! Wasn't Bernie a RS freshman?
