PFF Breaks Down Miami/OSU

We weren't supposed to hang with Notre Dame. We weren't supposed to get in the playoffs. We weren't supposed to beat A&M. We can't hang with Ohio State either.
We were 100% supposed to hang with ND and had a clear path to the playoffs this year that we unfortunately nearly fumbled. Also, we were only a 3.5 point dog on the road against 8-4. This the first point you brought up where everyone in the nation has a consensus we are underdogs.

Our biggest concern is going to be our Center going against McDonald... hope they don't let him push the middle of the pocket into Beck

Exactly my first thought!

He is going to get blown up like no other game this year and we’ve seen him get pushed back 2-4 yards vs mediocre DT’s.

Duo blocking will need to be mixed in but more importantly, we are going to need Pringle this game in the running game.

This really comes down to Beck and the passing game, however. Will need to set up the run game with the passing game early.

2nd down will be the key down the entire game as that to me should be the running down.
He's an All American bro

If folks think Miami has a plodding/sluggish offense, you ain’t seen nothing yet. OSU loves 13/14 personnel and 8 possession games.

I would be surprised if they changed their approach and went tempo bc they haven’t really done that all year and it’s not their style. Their style is to condense the game into as few possessions as possible and be efficient on offense.

As for their defense, they don’t do anything exotic bc they don’t need to - they rely on their talent. The key to our run game is McDonald. If he has his way with brockermeyer, it’s going to be tough sledding on inside runs and we will struggle.
100%

This

Miami A&M was a low scoring game but was exciting because of the defense and physicality

You want to put yourself to sleep? Put on OSU and Texas

Sure it was good defense but the plodding god awful playcalling and two QBs that couldn’t complete a decent pass

I was watching that game with some friends and it was torture

I think it comes down to coaching, and that worries me.

Despite the defense being near perfect against TAMU, Miami still needed Toure to literally risk his life to save the game. If he doesn’t dislodge that pass, we go to OT and I don’t like our chances. Our defense was completely gassed at the end of the game. Thats not an indictment, so was their defense. But at the end of the game we could have kept them from touching the ball again if Toney goes down at the 1. Would have been nearly zero risk of them driving the field to tie or win the game if Cristobal thinks it through. Thats what NFL teams would do and that’s the kind of team Cristobal has built.

Just after the game I said I didn’t have an issue with Toney scoring there but after rewatching the game a couple more times I think we were unnecessarily playing with fire. Our kicker missed his longer kicks because he was using kentucky windage to adjust his kicks for the gale force winds. He didn’t have an issue with the XP after the TD because it was close enough for the wind not to matter. If you want to play an NFL style game like Cristobal wants, I think you have to be consistent the whole game, including the end of the game . Bleed the clock and trust the kicker to hit what amounts to an XP to win.

TAMU wasnt quite the GT kneel fiasco but boy did it get close. I think we WILL earn a window of opportunity to closeout OSU, I hope Cristobal is able to make the most of it.

And to be fair- it’s entirely possible that in the TAMU game Cristobal’s original plan was to have Toney go down at the 1 and then kick a FG to win but Toney saw the end zone and got too eager. Mario isn’t going to throw Toney under the bus if that was the case. Would be interesting to find out if Toney ran the play as intended or if he was supposed to go down at the 1.

Points will be there to be had as long as we play aggressively. They will give up the deep ball and control Mali and the intermediate game with Downs. (Stud) I think CJ, Marion and jojo can and will get vertical. Hopefully we take the shots. I probably have more to say about it but I’ll save it. I got 21-17 Miami.
