PFF Breaks Down Miami/OSU

If folks think Miami has a plodding/sluggish offense, you ain’t seen nothing yet. OSU loves 13/14 personnel and 8 possession games.

I would be surprised if they changed their approach and went tempo bc they haven’t really done that all year and it’s not their style. Their style is to condense the game into as few possessions as possible and be efficient on offense.

As for their defense, they don’t do anything exotic bc they don’t need to - they rely on their talent. The key to our run game is McDonald. If he has his way with brockermeyer, it’s going to be tough sledding on inside runs and we will struggle.

If I'm being honest, I don't like the Dawson/Patricia matchup. I don't like the matchup of our running game vs their front seven and I especially don't like our passing game vs OSU'S pass defense. I love our defense but the trio of Jeremiah Smith/Carnell Tate/Brandon Innis will present a huge amount of stress on our secondary. However, there's something about this team that adds up to more than the sum of its parts and something tells me that these kids won't let anyone or anything stand in their way. Say what you want about Mario Cristobal but his teams always get up for big games. That and Taint hasn't faced anyone like us this year.

I have a hard time believing that a true freshman QB and RB will beat us. If we make them one dimensional they are in trouble. We need to hold both receivers to under 60 yards each.
That’s a tall order… and I don’t think we need to accomplish this.

Get CJ going early and throw him 1 on 1 balls. I can live with taking shots. I can’t live with a bottled up vanilla gameplan to try and protect Beck unless we are able to get 4-5 a carry.

I listened to the podcast they did. Good breakdowns as usual. They both had a lot of positives to say but at the end of the day pretty much had the same concerns a lot of us do. How does Miami generate enough explosives to scare Taint? I don’t know either. We’re going to need to play our absolute best and probably get a couple lucky bounces. Special teams, or a turnover, probably two. One guy had us scoring 10, the other guy has us scoring 14. I think we can get more than that, but we have to be perfect. I know other games don’t apply necessarily to this one, but I can’t shake all the offensive lulls we’ve had this year. We went drives, quarters, ****…games! where we looked really pedestrian on offense. Now this is BY FAR the best defense we’ve played all year. It’s really on Dawson and Beck. Patricia is a professional coach, with weeks to prepare, and an embarrassment of talent to work with. Dawson and Beck have to match him. We’re out-talented on that side, if we get massively outcoached, and I’m including Beck being confused in being outcoached, then yeah we’re gonna score 10 or 13 points and probably lose. But if those 2 are on their A+ game and we can get to 20+, we can and very well might win.

It’s all on the offense, imo. If taint comes out and scores 30 on us, I’ll tip my cap and say I was dead wrong. I don’t see it. Imo the defense will allow us to win this game. Whether we do or not depends on the offense.

Brockerneyer is a terrible matchup for this NT McDonald. He is way too bug and physical. But Indiana and Texas had success running with outside zone, with RBs turning up in the B and C gaps

Brockermeyer is going to need help in the middle....
Exactly my first thought!

He is going to get blown up like no other game this year and we’ve seen him get pushed back 2-4 yards vs mediocre DT’s.

Duo blocking will need to be mixed in but more importantly, we are going to need Pringle this game in the running game.

This really comes down to Beck and the passing game, however. Will need to set up the run game with the passing game early.

2nd down will be the key down the entire game as that to me should be the running down.

Chop blocks on McDonald to get him backing up for a second or 2, and quick hits to the holes by Pringle might be our best shots to run inside. This Ohio State defense is super fast, and we cant run long developing run plays. Fletcher and Pringle cant take the ball 6-7 yards deep and expect the blocking to hold up. Closer to LOS and quick hits

Ohio state will be most talented team we face all year. We will need to bring our A game at all facets to have a chance. We will need to be more physical than Ohio st.

We should mix up our defensive coverages to try to confuse Sayin and Smith and co. We definitely need to win this game at the LOS without a doubt.

I am not all that confident that we will win but I am hopeful while also being realistic.

I also feel we will need to hit some big plays and also force some turnovers to help out our offense against Osu.

Here's hoping we can hang in there and have a chance to win the game in the 4th Q.

Go Canes!

Keep In mind that IU and UT centers are big dudes - 6-4/6-5, 315 range. Brock is 6-2, 295/300.

Not sure about that. Outside of Black’s one big run, Indiana’s run game was pedestrian at best in that game iirc. Styles for OSU was an absolute beast against the run.

I think they come out in a bear front like they did against UW, except they will line #98 up over Brockermeyer. Against UW they had (from offense l-r: Curry, Jackson, Malone, MacDonald, Reese)

Anytime they line up like this we need to be able to get our RB through the rightside B-gap untouched (like UW did). Cooper vs. Curry (or vs. MacDonald like here) and CiCi vs. Reese is a favorable setup for us as long as Brockermeyer doesn't get shoved into the RB.

If we can get them out of bear fronts, then we can try to exploit them off LT pulling OL r-l, and give Brockermeyer help against #98 running duo.

#1 makes a great tackle for an 8 yard gain and Reese gets back in the play to help out too, but Reese against CiCi in the run game is a big advantage for us, and if our WR block better than UW's did here it can be an explosive

(And I realize UW doubled the NT with the RG here and inserted the TE to block #98, but I don't think we will find much joy trying that with Lofton/Bauman. Other option if they lineup the same way in Bear against us would be to run between Bell & McCoy/Samson where we should have an advantage against Curry & Jackson)

Mario understandably wants to avoid pulling from the 2002 game but I see a lot of parallels and lessons to draw from.

The roles are reversed.

We believed the same things they belive about us right now. We had the dominant defense with 1st rounders littered around it. And we had an offense that was unstoppable with the same dominant WR in Andre Johnson.

But go back and think about what happened that day. What was the surprise? And it happened immediately, the first offensive play of the game. Their D Line came with their hair on fire 🔥 and made Dorsey shook and uncomfortable from the beginning. Our OLine got handled, not manhandled but definitely handled. Their defense was flying all over the place and they took away everything underneath, including the run but kinda left their CBs to duel with Johnson banking on Dorsey’s timing being off and his accuracy. And it worked.

Their offense was mostly horizontal, run based, dependent on one or two explosives a game, and unspectacular by playoff/postseason standards as well. But they believed and kept chopping at it. The play of their defense fueled the offense’s belief and their OLine eventually held up as well. Our offense right now is much better than OSU’s 2002 offense. If our OLine blocks ESPECIALLY the interior of Brockermeyer, Pancake, McCoy and Cooper, we win.

OSU won because of Terry Porter’s devilry. But they stayed close enough for him to pull that off by their trenches playing lights out and surprising our team.

They were counted out by the media and all metrics said they should lose as well! But then their trenches showed up and overachieved just for one night.

OSU hasn’t changed. Ohio doesn’t change. It’s the culture here to be the same everyday no matter what that is. We have to be tough on Wednesday. We have to have Blood In Our Eyes. They had nothing to lose and they played like it.

We must play in the trenches like it’s our last day on Earth. If we do, we beat them easily and won’t require a cheating late flag.

If we have no penalties, we will have no turnovers. They go hand and hand mentally. Play clean and tough. Dawson go vertical and run the ball between the Guards and Tackles.
