Pac 12 Players Asking for 50% of revenue to play this year

Some here are acting as if players are paid they will not get scholarships.

As much as some may hate it, the players will still get scholarships because it is in the schools interest to still get the best teams possible.

The thought of an overpaid coach suing the University for loss of income when he makes 2X to 10X more than the University President is hilarious. They'd be laughed out of court.

Will some colleges drop out because they cannot be as profitable? Sure. , but the vast majority will remain and BIGTIME College sports will continue undeterred.

The loss of the smallest entities like the Wagners and Elon's will not curtail Universities from continuing to ride this huge fat gravy train.

The reduction of unnecessary and misguided appendages (ncaa) that do not add value to collegiate sports will be the primary victims
Ummm.....the schools are contractually obligated to do exactly what the contract states. It doesn't matter if it's 100x the school president's salary.

“There is no better example of NCAA sports’ racial exploitation,” Ramogi Huma, executive director of the would-be college athlete union, the National College Players Association, said last week, “than colleges marching their football players into the covid-19 pandemic without the enforcement of any health and safety standards in pursuit of football revenue that players themselves will never see.”

"Racial exploitation" LOL

Agree 100%.

But that doesn't mean it's not out of whack, just like not paying players

Also if scholarships are worth so much and so valuable. ....Try paying coaches and administrators or anyone on this board with scholarships and see how fast they tell you to GTFOH!!

It's only of value if it's easily exchangeable and universally valued by all others. Telling me a Pet Rock is worth x amount doesn't make it so .

Most people would rather $$ to spend as they see fit.

This is a stupid quote. The athletes will get the best testing and monitoring etc. The student body as a whole is diverse but a lot of Caucasian and will not get the athlete treatment. The idea that a minority athlete will be worse off and be discriminated against is cuckoo

Of course not, because we're grown and already went to school and have careers. These are kids who are in college and that scholarship is the vessel which will give the majority of them that don't make it to the NFL, the degree to get that $$$$
There are millions of Americans working multiple jobs and taking a class or 2 at a time, who would cherish that scholarship.

Cmon D you get my point

I'm a UM alum so I have no axe to grind BUT...

Try paying those millions of Americans who are working multiple jobs and taking a class or two at a time with scholarships.....Duke you wouldn't make it out of the door!!...even if you had an armed escort.

In fact, your escorts would turn on you for making such an outrageous offer.

People given a choice overwhelmingly prefer cash so they can make their own selections without restrictions.

It's simply not true that getting an athletic type scholarship would be anyone's or most athletes compensation choice...it's only what is offered because it best controls the recipient

Once you see a coach sue a university for 50 or 60 million dollars and loss of future earnings for wrongful termination in a real court, not a campus kangeroo court, you'll be less awed by the power of these kids . . . Oh, and what should the cut of the revenues for the coaches be . . . ?

Good luck with that lawsuit. If they don't fire them for cause or agree to a buyout the universities have to eat the contract.

There was a good yahoo sports CFB pod today. First time I listened to it. Dan Wolke and Pete Thamel (Pat Forde was on vacation).

It was very fair and balanced, IMO. Everyone agrees 50% of revenue is a nonstarter. The kids did themselves a disservice by making this demand, because it takes the eyes off the legit requests, such as Covid assurances, 6 years post-graduation health insurance, and the ability to transfer one time without penalty. It's hard to argue with any of those.

Some of the other demands are ridiculous, especially when camp is supposed to start in 3 weeks.

They go on to say that Mark Emrett sucks. The schools/ADs have wanted NIL for years, because it gave them a way to get the players paid without running into Title IX issues. Emrett dragged his feet, and now the players have the leverage. He makes $4M/per, and basically does nothing.

Apparently the B1G commissioner gets $20M/year after bonuses. As the podcast hosts said, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. Even bowl game commissioners are making over $1M.

As far at the Pac12 commish, apparently he sucks at his job too. Bungled the tv deal, which is the only thing he has really done. Makes like $5M.

I get the arguments that the kids get the education and all that, but when you see how fat these elitist presidents are getting, its hard to say you can't break a little something off for the kids.

Then why did they accept scholarships to begin with? Why do they throw huge parties to sign that letter of intent? Scholarships are valuable to 18 year old kids. In no other area of life to you get everything paid for AND get to demand a piece of the revenue.

But you're comparing adults - who expect to get paid for working - to students. What other students get to demand revenue sharing at age 18? Before you tell me about the "millions" brought in by football, I would suggest that you take a look at a university's overall budget.
