Is this RB group good enough to run on ND? The OL should be able to at least go toe to toe with ND’s DL. Do we have the backs to punish Norte Dame?

This game will come down to stopping the run and our run game, as ND’s secondary is excellent IMO.

Thoughts?

Every RB on our team save Brown was a 4 star RB out of high school. Every single one. Lyle was considered a top 5 RB in the country, and #1 by some rankings. If that is not good enough to have a strong running game behind our OL, then we have big problems up and down our roster with highly rated kids who are nowhere as good as their high school ratings.

I think Lyle is going to be our best all-around back since Duke Johnson. Fletcher is **** good too and over criticized on these boards just because he doesn’t have top flight speed. Add in Charmar and a talented freshman in Pringle, and I’d stack our top 4 backs against anyone in the country.

Both teams have good running games. Notre Dame was 4th nationally in yards per carry and we were 5th.

We will miss Martinez, but Lyle and Fletcher combined for 1,007 yards (6 YPC) and 13 TDs last year. Both have the physical tools to hold up against real defenses. I'd give Notre Dame the edge on paper because of Love's explosiveness but it's close.

The real separator will be run defense. Both teams have new defensive coordinators for different reasons. Huge game for guys like Justin Scott and Wesley Bissainthe.

**** Cat was a Three Star. ,but has 4 Star talent & So does Brown. At this stage forget the Stars , What do the bring on the field with them is what Matters.

Elijah Lofton is a devastating Blocker go watch Louisville on 4th down & 1 With Mark Fletcher. You will see what a block looks like.
You don't need to convince me. I know very well what a great blocker Lofton is. The above wasn't my post. I merely changed the name because in the original he had the name of Elijah Alston but I knew he was talking about Lofton.

I could understand a thread questioning our passing game with unproven pass catchers everywhere, but the run game. Everyone should be figuring out by now, the real question on this team will be run D. ND will tell us everything we need to know quickly about our run D. If it goes badly, expect teams to run on us all year. Overall, I expect the D to be better. How could it not be? If we can't stop the run, well. Every post about the ND game should reference ND's run game and our run D. A RS FR QB making his 1st start at Miami with the perceived #1 RB taken in next years draft.

I disagree

ND has arguably the best OL in America and Love is a great back.

Its not apples to apples that teams will run on us all year based on that alone.

I certainly hope that our run defense, pass defense and total defense is markedly improved. On paper it should be.

How much will losing Golden affect them ? Freeman being a defensive guy might mitigate that and they lost guys but not a ton of guys either. I am cincerned with our run D, but we now have the secondary talent to possibly make them 1 dimensional. Seems like it will set up to be a pretty close game where field position (looking at you Marion) and winning turnover battle looms large.

I don’t think we stop Love from getting 130 yards. It’s just can we stop him from going for 175 yards. Love is an absolute animal and we have to show these LBs can tackle before I think we can do a **** thing. I just don’t know what ND brings back on defense I thought I saw their secondary will be very good again.
